"I had been in the Oval Office a hundred times as vice president or more... But I had never been up in the residence."

"And one of the things — I don't know about you all, but I was raised in a way that you didn't look for anybody to wait on you. And it's — we're — I find myself extremely self-conscious. There are wonderful people that work at the White House. But someone is standing there and making sure I — hands me my suit coat, or..."

From the transcript of Biden's CNN Town Hall last night.

Anderson Cooper expressed surprise that Biden had never been in the residence part of the White House? Obama never had him over?

Biden continues. I'll add a page break because this is very rambly:

And so living in the White House.... it's a little like a gilded cage, in terms of being able to -- but walk outside and do things. The vice president's residence is totally different. You're on 80 acres overlooking the rest of the city. And you can walk out. There's a swimming pool. You can walk off the porch in the summer and jump in a pool and go into work. You can ride a bicycle around and never leave the property and work out. You can — and — but the White House is very different. And I feel a sense of — I must tell you, a sense of history about it. Jon Meacham, who you know, and several other presidential historians helped me with my — I asked my brother, who's good at this, to set up the Oval Office for me, because it all happens within two hours, you know, literally. They move everything out and move something — and it was interesting to hear these historians talk about what other presidents have gone through and the moments, and who are the people who stepped up to the ball and who are the people who didn't? And what you realize is, the most consequential thing, for me, is, although I have known this watching seven presidents who I got to know fairly well, is, I always in the past looked at the presidency in the terms of Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt and George Washington, and how can — like they're superhuman. But I had to remind myself that the really fine men that I knew well, the last seven presidents, and at least there are people who I knew well enough to know that I could play on the same team with. So, it took away the sense of, this is — my God, I'm not Abraham Lincoln. I'm not Franklin Roosevelt. How do I deal with these problems?

I just want to say there's also a pool at the White House. But maybe it's more difficult to just "walk off the porch... and jump in a pool" and then "go into work" — if you know what I mean. Joe Biden famously jumped in that VP pool nude. And we're told the female Secret Service found it "offensive," which if true, is ridiculous. It was his own home and he liked to just walk off the porch and jump in the pool. You don't have to go inside and change into swimwear. You can just shed whatever you have on and you're perfectly attired for swimming. Good for him. But the White House is, perhaps, a more formal place. And whoever sees the President of the United States naked? I mean, other than in your mind's eye when Bob Dylan sings "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)."

I had to look it up to be sure there is indeed a pool at the White House, and let me give you these fascinating nuggets of fact from Wikipedia:

The 20-foot (6.1 m) wide and 50-foot (15 m) long pool was created in 1975 by 38th President Gerald Ford during his presidency... Ford's son, Jack, learned to scuba dive in the pool, and 39th President Jimmy Carter's daughter Amy frequently dived in the pool. Barbara Bush frequently swam in the pool; in 1990 a rat swam past her and was subsequently drowned by her husband, 41st President George H.W. Bush. Barbara Bush said that she "[swam] with a mask, and it just went right by in front of me... Fortunately, George Bush was there and drowned the beast. It was horrible." Hillary Clinton was also a frequent user of the pool.... In the first year of his presidency Barack Obama wrote that he would leave the Oval Office and "have a cigarette (or two)" by the cabana "savoring a quieter moment and letting my thoughts wander and deepen."

Can you picture H.W. drowning a rat? How dare you swim past my wife?! Does he grab it by the neck to hold it under? How long would it take — long enough to segue from feelings of heroism to feelings of cruelty? Was Barbara egging him on, praising him, getting excited by his man-on-rat prowess? Did the Secret Service stand back and stand by?

But Bush vs. Rat is not my favorite part of the Wikipedia White House swimming pool paragraph. My favorite part is Obama's prose: "savoring a quieter moment and letting my thoughts wander and deepen." I love Obama's utterly justified supreme confidence that his readers will drink up this notion that if he sits by the pool smoking and lets his mind go, his thoughts will not merely wander, like yours and mine — his thoughts will deepen

ADDED: "But I had to remind myself that the really fine men that I knew well, the last seven presidents..." — Did he just call Trump a really fine man? Or am I taking that out of context? Did he go on to exclude Trump...?

I’m pretty likely to swim nude any chance I get. But, if I were VP, I’d definitely check (or at least warn) the secret service that I’m likely to swim nude and I don’t want to offend the agents (man, woman, etc). In some ways it’s different than swimming nude in front of an employee but in some ways it’s not. I think it’s just basic respect to check first instead of dropping trough in front of the female agents sworn to save your life and who you know can’t leave. To me, that’s a lot like Lyndon Johnson holding generals and cabinet secretaries hostage in the Oval Office while he took a dump with the door open. It’s an abuse of power and not a minor one. Funny, Johnson also abused a lot of his other powers and I suspect Biden will too.

Technically Biden (or any other president) may not have to "cater" to the sensibilities of any given Secret Service agent, but there's the concept of behavioral norms and basic human decency toward other human beings. But even beyond that, it's just not a good idea to be a jerk to people under you. People gossip. And Biden chose this life. It wasn't thrust upon him.

In general, nobody has to be kind or considerate to the staff, the servents, the maids, the cooks, the housekeepers, the gardeners, and other domestic workers, but it's good practice to be for a number of obvious reasons. And you should especially never be a jerk to people who prepare your food.

Wrong. Just totally, 100%, completely, off-the-rails wrong. It was not his own home or his own pool. It was property of the United States, which he was occupying because of the high office he held, and for that secret service agent, it was her workplace. Personally, on the merits I don't think it's a huge deal that he swam naked. I mean, who cares? But I certainly don't think of the VP's residence as the current occupant's own personal space to do as he or she pleases, like the rest of us.

I skinny dip in my pool all the time when I don't have guests over. (I'm very normal, as acquaintances will tell you.) There is one neighbor window with a shot at my pool - shades almost always closed. If that lady happens to catch a peek through the blinds, she can watch all she wants - or she can quickly snap them shut. Her call; not my problem.

I'm a little torn. Because after all, they're basically servants (bodyguards), and one ought to be considerate of the help, particularly when they're not your own servants, but have been assigned to you by someone else. It's like if you repeatedly stripped nude in front of the maids in your private hotel room, for example. But on the other, one shouldn't be a prisoner to one's servants.

That said, the bodyguards are supposed to blend into the background not so that senior officials can play make-believe that they're living in an ordinary private residence that just happens to be provided by the government. They're supposed to blend into the background because that makes them more effective.

It's perfectly normal to swim naked in a private pool.

If it's private and you're into that sort of thing, sure. I've certainly done it, it's great. If it's with a group of people accustomed to that sort of thing, sure. If it's in front of your mixed-sex American workforce, WTF are you talking about.

There are levels of privacy and SS agents guarding your life are somewhere between public and private. That being the case, normal people accommodate normal expectations. This expectation of yours is kind of weird. Biden's expectation is at least slightly unsurprising since politicians are narcissists and he's a creep who violates the personal space of women.

Reminds me of people who habitually cheat and justify it by saying everyone does. They don't. Or people with really foul language, they don't hear it after awhile and think everyone talks that way, and have lost the ability to understand how ugly it sounds. It can be hard to get outside of your own head.

And RIP Rush.

Casting my vote for, it's perfectly OK to skinny dip discreetly. It is very inconsiderate to do it in front of people it may bother, without at least giving them some warning.

So no, Biden doesn't have to cater to his Secret Service detail. Still, there seems to be a spectrum of behavior among Secret Service protectees. At one end you have "I have the right to get naked in front of you" and at the other you have the noted rat-drowner: Oh, your little boy lost his hair to chemo? All right, I'm shaving my head. Send him over to hang out when he feels up to it. Hey, guys, let's all do it.

(Not the greatest president, but damn, the man had heart.)

RIP, Rush. Amazing to think how recently I heard him on the radio, how sick he must have been but he really did want to carry on as long as he could. I'm thinking of that impromptu interview where the TMZ reporter approached him after he received the Medal of Freedom. Looked friendly but bewildered for a long moment – then with his wife's help he places the guy, remembers him, says nice things. And for a man whose public trademark has sometimes been arrogant bombast (played to good effect!), caught by surprise he was gracious, sincere, even humble. The smiling "But I'll take it!" is how I'll remember him.

Some people hear that Biden's administration is Obama's third term and think Obama's going to be running things, but Obama was barely running things in his second term himself. I think it means more that the top people are left over from Obama-Biden and will be carrying out the policies of the Obama years, only taking them much further because their party controls Congress. But then it's typical in a way. So much of what you read on the internet started out as a metaphor or a joke or an insult, but then it gets taken literally and takes on a life of its own

Slow Joe had been to the Oval Office "a hundred times or more." During President Obama's term, (giving Slow Joe the benefit of the doubt and doubling that number and also providing that he had never been to the Oval Office in any of his previous years in government), that works out to be about once every two weeks. To roughly quote Seinfeld, "they only woke him up for the important meetings."

I would never consider swimming naked in front of a secret service detail or any other sort of worker. I've known many people with pools but I don't know anyone who swims naked in those pools.

That said, if you have a very private pool -- no view from other properties, no workers, no family aside from your spouse -- then go ahead and swim naked if you want. I just doubt that it is very common.

I do detect more than an hint of feminist hypocrisy though. I don't recall any concerns about privacy, modesty or decency when female reporters wanted into NFL dressing rooms. Then the story was "We're all adults here and it is part of your job to have women ogling you when you are dressing."

I know naked swimming at the VP residence, which I just learned is not at all creepy in the presence of SS personnel of the opposite sex, and visiting upstairs at the WH, which I infer Joe has in fact done while spouting BS, is more fun to talk about, but here are some howlers from the townhall:

"there is a consensus among economists left, right, and center that is over -- and including the IMF and in Europe, that overwhelming consensus is, in order to grow the economy a year, two, three, and four down the line, we can't spend too much."

Consensus that excludes Larry Summers et al.?

"And the fact is that the concern in many minority communities is black-on-black, Hispanic-on-Hispanic, not just -- but here's the deal. There has to be much more serious -- how can I say it? Much more serious determination as to what the background and the attitudes of the recruit is, where -- what their views are"

Taking the opportunity to swim naked in view of a female secret service agent who was compelled by her employment to watch him, dovetails with his weird hair sniffing and touching. He's a bit of a deviant sexually. So were Kennedy and Clinton of course.

I don't think it was ok for him to expose himself to any employee whether he asks or not. I don't know if the President is bound by EEOC rules for sexual harassment, but they certainly should be.

These houses are properties of the National Park Service, and are merely accommodations for employees and their families. They are not private homes.

From Robert A. Caro's "Master of the Senate: The Years of Lyndon Johnson III":

“He would piss in the parking lot of the House Office Building,” says Wingate Lucas, a farm boy who represented Fort Worth. “Well, a lot of fellows did that. I did it. But the rest of us would try to hide behind a car or something. Lyndon wouldn’t. He just didn’t care if someone noticed him.” In fact, Lucas says, he seemed to want to be noticed. “I remember once, we were walking across the lot and some [female] secretaries were behind us, and he just stopped and began to take a piss right in front of them.” He would also urinate in front of his own secretaries— and since some of them were attractive young women, this, too, was startling to those who witnessed it. During the years in the House, he had a one-room hideaway office on the top floor of the House Office Building— without a toilet, but with a washbasin in the corner of the room, concealed behind a wood and green-burlap screen. While entertaining guests in the hideaway, or dictating to a secretary, he would pull the screen aside and urinate in the basin... And if ... a colleague came in, Johnson, finishing, would sometimes turn to him with his penis in his hand. Without putting it back in his pants, he would begin a conversation, still holding it, “and shaking it, as if he was showing off,” says one man with whom he did this. He asked another man, “Have you ever seen anything as big as this?”

They wanted to make sure that no one had VD and would infect the pool. It was a huge pool used for state meets.

Never underestimate Joe Biden's ability to fuck things up.

Obama clearly thought Biden was an idiot, and he didn't want him around. Heaven only knows what Michelle thought, but I would guess she was more negative than Barry.

Remember, Barry went to Punahou School, and Michelle was a student at the very selective Whitney Young High School, then they both went Ivy. Joe was just a scrappy kid from...somewhere. He was near the bottom at Syracuse Law. Barry and Michelle had heard the story once too often about what great knockers Joe's first wife had. Then he'd talk about their great sex life. And then you could not get him to leave.

Barry didn't want to put Michelle or himself through another evening with Biden. No invites to the residence.

I'm interested in the 7 Presidents Problem. Biden knew 8 Presidents, including Nixon who called Biden to condole with him after Biden's wife was killed in a car crash. So did he think Nixon was "a fine man?" No, if we look he says "the last seven Presidents." So he's saying that Reagan and Trump were "really fine men" and that Obama's performance as President was on a level which Biden feels he can easily match. I agree with these assessments. Unity. Celebrate when it happens.
