Oh! The convention. Day 3. Do you care?

What's the point of Day 3? I don't get it. They've got to get the VP nominated, so there's one order of business. Other than that, it's a line-up of speeches, notably President Obama, but also the VP guys, Biden and Kaine. I'm a little curious about whether the convention will finally get around to the substance of the job of a President — notably national security. I'm tired of the celebration of diversity and the platitudinous assurances of commitment to equality. We're watching something else on TV for now — this — but I'm recording the convention and may get around to watching a bit of it. In the meantime, please let it rip in the comments.

ADDED:
Sugar, do you know what I'm saying to you this evening?
Maybe you think I'm being a little self-centered
But I, I said I want to be all of the things you are to me
Surely, surely you can see

Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away."

Obama's speech was terrible. It had good speechiness, if you like that sort of thing. Ted Cruz also has good speechiness. But there was nothing in it that resonated, nothing that enlightened, it was a partisan hack job, it was dull, it was self-congratulatory ... I know some people say they liked it but they're wrong. They're ideologues who liked the moment and the man of it. But as a speech, they couldn't be telling the truth if they said they liked it because ... it was terrible.

Tim Kaine's was better and his was pretty bad.

Why bother. We can wait a bit and find out what really happened, when Scott Adams persuades us.

Anywho, BHO was good. That's all I saw, I only checked out the main event.

According to BHO, HRC gets you American politics as American politics was meant to work. And, DJT gets you a dude who promises that all violence and crime will end in America on the day he's elected.

"I have a message for all of you: the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end. Beginning on January 20th 2017, safety will be restored"

Why does it take BHO's writing skills to point out that HRC's fibs need to be dug up by the work of hundreds of researchers (e.g. Congressional, FBI, etc), while Trump openly flings BS (such as the quote above).

And secondly, if some dope is scared into following DJT, do they think he'll be implementing Federal marshal law? Even if he could end all violence and crime, what would that look like, logistically?

Oh, you certainly were wondering earlier. But maybe I over-estimated your sense of curiosity.

Or maybe you're just that self-righteous about your opinion of others.

Hillary is fixated on the fact that she's female. Don't be offended by that; just accept that it's not a very inclusive attitude. There are plenty of women who don't fixate on gender as the only component of their identity, and plenty of men who don't, either. People are more complex than that, generally - at least the mature ones realize they are. If you don't, then keep going on about how being a woman makes you special and better than others. You might even get some votes out of it. But not more than you'll lose.

That dude warned that men (such as R&B) would respond defensively if HRC didn't put a cork in reminders that she's a gal looking to take a dude's job.

It's not that it's a "dude's job", it's that the woman has some huge issues. Anyone who's read any biography on her upbringing - this is obvious to. She idolizes her grandmom and mum and believes that the men of her family treated them all like shit. Maybe they did, but this is not everyone's experience. But she grafts it onto her American narrative as if it's all that being president is about. Sure, and maybe all domestic violence will end with a female president, too. What a fantasy.

Last night's convention she flashed a video montage of every president in sepia until they were assembled in a collage of glass that was smashed and gave way to a live satellite feed of her shit-eating grin in Manhattan. How is this not disrespectful of the very office to which she aspires? Do Lincoln's and Obama's and FDR's and George Washington's faces really need to be reduced to glass and then smashed? This is a woman with issues. The country is about more than her and her damn gender issues. Talk about navel-gazing aimed wrong about a foot too low. I understand that there are other (usually older) women in America with this same problem but that's mostly a psychological and social issue and not something that excuses selling out a country to investment banks or throwing its military away in every undemocratic hellhole in the world. It just simply shows that she has the wrong priorities and fixates on herself and will scream at anyone who has better things to do. Much like "Unknown #1". They need to grow up. It's hilarious how they yell double standard and have no maturity about them whatsoever.

Sprezzatura said...

One of the reasons you may have heard so little about Clinton's father is that he wasn't always the nicest guy, according to The New York Times. Rodham was a strict man and depression ran in his family. The Times, who spoke with Clinton biographer Carl Bernstein, wrote:

Hillary has declared war on the bill of rights. She says that she will appoint jurists to the supreme court who will vote specific ways on specific issues. She is saying that she will use the power of Supreme Court appointments to undemocratically rewrite the constitution.
Hillary voted for the Iraq War. She turned Libya into a failed state. She has proved herself incompetent in every field of human endeavor. The daughter Hillary raised with all the advantages of wealth and cultural and political power is a dull thing married to a failure of a hedge fund manager whose congressman father ripped off his investors to pay for a Nigerian 419 scam. I thought last night had some of the most effective speeches of the convention, particularly Bloomberg's. Rather than try to snow us over with this idea that Hillary isn't the person we've observed for 25 years, his argument was "you may not like Hillary, but the alternative is the vastly more horrible Trump." That speaks to voters who aren't already in the bag for Hillary (and considering she has underwater favorables, that's a significant group) but who may reluctantly vote for her. The opposite message is the one Trump needs to make ("you may have problems with me, but Hillary is a far worse alternative"). Bloomberg also hit on topics where the GOP is normally strong for moderates--national security and economic stability. That's where the white middle and upper class are persuadable.

The people heckling Panetta's speech were rude (I can't stand hecklers) even while they had a point--they're the dovish wing of the party and Panetta and Hillary represent interventionists. Unless they convince themselves that Trump is somehow dovish himself they don't really have a good option unless they go third party.

Overall though, it looked like a more effective night for Hillary than the previous two.

Well, *you* hardly need a convention, Brando, to believe the worst about Donald Trump. In fact, I don't know how to to change your mind about him. What's the word-prejudice, you are prejudiced against him.

I really wish you would define and compartmentalize your accusations better and we could take them up one at a time but you keep calling him crooked and I don't think the word means what you think it means, because AFAIK, he's never spent a day in jail.

And he doesn't have any powers of high office to protect him, just the powers of the Constitution like any man (though better maximized by his admitted resources; yet you see he can lose rulings, opposing witnesses live to testify, etc).

I mean what, he had some failed business ventures? By that standard, Thomas Edison was the biggest crook ever.

So you can say he's an advocate of sharp practice, that just means he's not too stupid to be the president.

You believe the worst interpretation of his positions when he has them and you fill the blanks in when he doesn't, in black. If Hillary was on video fucking dogs you would say that Trump did it too only there's no video, but he's such a bum that you'd believe it. Or, you'd say it's not disqualifying, but Trump told a fat Miss Venezuela that she was fat, and that's worse. There's no winning with you. Your mind is closed like a steel trap.

There is more wisdom during the last two minutes of every Duck Dynasty than there was in the whole Dem Con.

"Well, *you* hardly need a convention, Brando, to believe the worst about Donald Trump. In fact, I don't know how to to change your mind about him. What's the word-prejudice, you are prejudiced against him."

Well, my comment above was more about what would be effective from the Clintonite point of view if they were trying to win--I'm not rooting for her (or Trump) in this one so it wasn't an expression of what they'd do to convince me.

But you're right--I am prejudiced against Trump, as I've followed him since growing up in NY when he was first becoming famous there. At the time, I just thought of him as a blustery showman with more sizzle than steak, and while he seemed shady and I didn't trust him, it didn't matter much. Anyone choosing to do business with him made their choice. But in this campaign, certainly as he became the presumptive nominee, I tried to find things redeeming about him to prove my initial bias wrong--that maybe, as some Trump fans put it, he is crooked but would still benefit America and the values I care about. I'm just not seeing it, and frankly I'd like to see it because of my long distaste for Hillary. Even so, I don't go in for every crack at Trump because as is always the case in these elections, a lot of unfair or overboard charges get thrown around and that nonsense is pointless.

"You seem to be the only virgin in the whorehouse. Elections are not won by cutting out paper dolls. What part of 'No More Mr. Nice Guy' don't you understand?"

I've never complained that Trump (or anyone) "fights too much" or "isn't nice enough." Everyone likes a fighter! I'm sure Clintonites like that the Clintons always "fight" the GOP and other enemies. But I don't consider pointless Twitter wars over irrelevant issues or distracting people from your own message or interrupting every time Hillary is in hot water with some new crap about conspiracy theories or any other unhinged rants that reflect poorly on the ranter to be "fighting."

"If Hillary was on video fucking dogs you would say that Trump did it too only there's no video, but he's such a bum that you'd believe it. Or, you'd say it's not disqualifying, but Trump told a fat Miss Venezuela that she was fat, and that's worse. There's no winning with you. Your mind is closed like a steel trap."

I don't think this is a fair assessment of my comments--when Hillary does something bad I criticize her, and only bring up Trump if it's directly relevant. And I don't jump on every dig at Trump, particularly his "sexist remarks over the years"--as I've noted before, those are mostly taken out of context and were often not so over the line anyway (not for the owner of a pageant, for example). I've defended Trump when the situation warranted it.

On the other hand, I've noticed a number of commenters here (not sure which "Unknown" you are, so I can't speak for your previous comments) who simply cannot criticize Trump for anything, ever. I get that we're in "full campaign mode" but it suggests that either their spin is out of control or they are unable to judge the man in any way.

"DAY 3" is so the delegates can recover from their hangovers of Night 1 enough to enjoy another night on the town, with hookers and drugs, before heading home to the spouse.
