Christie endorses Trump!

This is huge! The big man makes a big splash and the cascade begins. From the NYT report:
The endorsement came a day after Mr. Rubio, in a withering debate performance, turned his guns on Mr. Trump for the first time, and followed up this morning, calling Mr. Trump a “con artist.”

Mr. Trump welcomed the endorsement with warm praise for the New Jersey governor. “He’s been my friend for many years, he’s been a spectacular governor,” said Mr. Trump, standing with Mr. Christie at a press conference in Fort Worth, Texas, for the endorsement.

“I am proud to be here to endorse Donald Trump,” said Mr. Christie, noting they have been friends for a decade. Mr. Trump “will do exactly what needs to be done to make America a leader around the world again,” said Mr. Christie.
That vastly overshadows Marco Rubio's bad comedy routine this morning as he (of all people!) makes fun of Trump for sweating: “First, he had this little makeup thing applying, like makeup around his mustache, because he had one of those sweat mustaches." And stoops to talking about Trump wetting his pants:
Then, Mr. Rubio said, he asked for a full-length mirror. “I don’t know why,” he said, winding up to his punch line: “Maybe to make sure his pants weren’t wet.”
In fairness to Rubio, Trump made a very big deal last night about the water pouring out of Rubio:
"He’s a meltdown guy. I mean, I’m looking at him, he’s just pouring sweat, I’ve never seen anything like it. I don’t know what the problem is, but he’s just pouring down sweat. We have to have somebody that doesn’t sweat."
AND: I see that Christie Trump is responding to Rubio on the makeup issue:
[H]e saw Mr. Rubio backstage with “a pile of makeup,” he said. “I said Marco, easy with the makeup, you don’t need that much.”

"you have no principles" Turns out, the PUA has sized up his targets pretty well. I confess I like seeing the game played with skill-- perhaps, we may hope, at the expense of Dems before long--even while anticipating who will screw whom and the inevitable regrets the next morning.

If Trump does win the nomination, I expect to see someone else run third party … The most unfortunate result of all this, of course, will be a Hillary victory.

And who would make this third party run? I do not see anyone on the right who would. Of course there’s Bloomberg but I believe he’s too smart to waste time on a losing cause, especially if the cause is to defeat Trump. Bloomberg surely must realize that he would draw more votes from Hillary than from Trump. Bloomie is a pro-gun control liberal Republican. He would get few Republican votes outside of NYC. He has zero national constituency on the Right.

Remind me if grackle or eric has ever said anything not negative about Christie before today.

Reservations preventing me from supporting Christie as Presidential material do not also prevent me from thinking that Christie would make a good AG. He has ample experience and he’ll follow orders, his Obama hug proved that. And any endorsement is good. There will be more, with such a major political figure as Christie as an example. I also believe Cruz might make a good SCOTUS but is not my choice for the Oval Office.

Speaking of nominees, I think a perfect Trump choice for SCOTUS would be the same judge Obama attempted to use as a shill and who subsequently withdrew his name from consideration after he realized he was being used by Obama.

About Iowa. Technically a loss, but Trump drew more votes than any GOP nominee ever had – other than Cruz. It also established the narrative of Cruz’s “dirty tricks” when Cruz drained off some of Carson’s supporters with a … dirty trick. All told, a net positive for Trump. On Carson’s prospects: Surgeon General?

Should Trump lose the nomination I will gladly and enthusiastically support and vote for whoever the GOP nominee may be. I’m too old for sour grapes and temper tantrums.

I think the bigger news of the day is Trump's attack on the free speech clause, and his goal of silencing anybody who criticizes him.

I thought so, too, but he has been so divisive in the campaign that he would be a hard sell to Democrats. Janice Rogers Brown is 67 and that is a shame. She should have been on the court for years now.

I wonder if Trump could talk Condi Rice into the VP slot. Probably not. I was thinking Rubio but he may have burned his bridges.

Kasich would have the chops for Sec Treasury.

Aside from your white hot hatred of Trump, do you know anything about the "malice" clause in the libel laws ?

Yes, I do.

Do you think Trump cares about First Amendment law, or respects it?

Pardon Petraeus? He turned over classified information to his girlfriend while he was head of the CIA. He should have been in prison for 10 years, not slapped on the wrist. He's a disgrace.

Maybe one of Trump's functions is to create greater separation between Conservative Ideology and the Republican Party.

I think the media has done a tremendous damage to itself by being so one-sided and partisan. And so Trump's attack on the free speech clause will be seen as an attack on liberal media. And yet he's attacking the very basis of our freedom, the right to criticize people in the government. He's a fascist in the Putin mold. That's why he likes Putin so much, and vice versa.

Trump's lawsuits are already insane. Imagine being sued for two years for calling this asshole a millionaire! Or being sued because you told a joke. This asshole wants to make this litigation more and more common, and make it easier and easier to sue people for speaking their minds.

Two Visions

The primary season is over - the candidates have been selected. It's mud-wrestling time. Who is dirtier - Trump or Hillary? As the Dark Ages close in gladiatorial contests become popular - as before; Christian are hiding underground - as before; effete elites spend their time sucking up to "poets" no one ever heard of in after years - as before. Barbarism - tattoos, illiteracy, social chaos - takes over - as before.

Trump will beat Hillary and she will hate him so much that she won't be able to make deals. Obama, to the last doing his best thing, which is stabbing in the back, will pardon no one. The Clinton crowd will be swept out, prosecuted by either Christie or Cruz. Paul Ryan will return to his Tea Party roots and lead reform. Mitch McConnell will follow the votes. The NSA servers will lock everyone out based on Doomsday instructions with an erroneous line of code. A giant Don't Tread on Me symbol will appear on the moon with Chinese characters - a Chinese Doomsday hack done by a girl who survived.

Rubio and Cruz are basically Republican Obama -- articulate, sure, but woefully inexperienced."

It is not possible for a genuinely conservative candidate like Cruz to amount to "the Republican Obama" based on experience. Experience doesn't matter nearly as much if your intention is to simply have government do *less*. The real Obama intends to have government solve everyone's problems, and as such, implementing such plans rationally requires a great deal of experience and wisdom (IMHO no one is experienced or wise enough to pull off progressive plans, but that's another argument).

The only wisdom Cruz needs and seems to have is to know that half the damn federal bureaucracy needs to be eliminated, and that doesn't require much experience either.

And before anyone says it, sure, Trump has plenty of experience firing people. I just very much doubt he has the wisdom to do it.

Trump isn't a con man, he's an opportunist. Illegal immigration lay on the table. The Democrats couldn't pick it up and, incredibly, the Republicans wouldn't pick it up. Opportunity knocking. No, it isn't rocket science but it's what Trump does. And both Republicans and Democrats look asinine criticizing what they created. It's like Dr. Frankenstein fretting that the high-water pants make his creation look unstylish.

Yes, but
You could get a CNC machineshop going in three-to-seven days IIRC, if you had the tools ready to go.
That was with drains, water, electrical, HVAC, etc., plus loading dock.
Just find a building - there were lots.
You could be in business with minimum fuss very very fast.
If you had to go out of business ditto.

There's nothing incredible at all about the Republicans not picking it up. The establishment republican party is fully behind "comprehensive amnesty designed to deliver permanent majorities to the democrats".

Of course, they will say that's not why they are for it, but in the end it matters not one whit.

@Anglelyne 4:26 Your description of the EU countries is right on. "Happy Gas". I like. The German government has seemed prepared to commit national suicide. The French... who knows what they are doing? As spring approaches borders all across Europe are finally beginning to close. The Brits are going to use the refugee issue to withdraw from the EU. As a result the rest of the EU will be, as Trump would say, "in the toilet".

You seem to believe that if you could just convince everyone that Trump is a very bad man then this would solve the problem. What if people have already factored into the equation that Trump is not the most ethical human on the planet and they still prefer him to the alternatives?

It would be amusing if the same bunch of people threw away an even larger sum of money.

Saint Croix said...

And this means what about the Malice clause in libel law?

I have no idea of the specifics of Trump's plan to attack the free speech clause, if he's going to attack Sullivan or stack the court with people hostile to free speech. I know there are lots of people on the left who are hostile to free speech. It's disheartening to me that so many Republicans are joining them.

Saint Croix said...

Note that Trump is attacking the corporation who owns The New York TImes and the corporation who owns The Washington Post. It's entirely possible that he will try to argue that this is corporate speech and therefore evil and wrong. And many people on the left (and the right, too, apparently) will go along with this.

Like every other issue, Trump reduces free speech to money and corporate interests. And also, obviously, he wants to sue anybody who attacks him. I think Trump is every inch the fascist. But it's entirely possible that he will be a fascist of the left, attacking "corporations" when he's actually just trying to censor his critics and centralize his own power and authority.
