"Hulsey conducted the interview amiably in his half-darkened office, lighted by only a dim energy-saving bulb favored by the environmentalist Hulsey."

The best sentence in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article "State Rep. Brett Hulsey investigated for bringing box cutter to Capitol."

ADDED: More here:
An aide to state Rep. Brett Hulsey told police last month she feared for her safety because of the Madison Democrat's behavior, which included considering bringing a gun to the Capitol even though he doesn't have a concealed-weapons permit, taking a box cutter to the statehouse on another day and urging the aide to train for self-defense with him....

In an interview with the State Journal on Tuesday night, Hulsey, 53, said he brought the cutting tool for use in self-defense training, which he said was necessary because Capitol Police told lawmakers and staffers to punch protesters if they felt threatened. He said he planned to use the box cutter without the blade extended.

"I called up Chief (David) Erwin and said, ‘You’re telling our staff to start hitting people,’" Hulsey said. "I told him, ‘You should be giving them effective self-defense training.’"...

The aide told police that on Feb. 1, Hulsey asked her to call Erwin to reserve a training room with mats because he and Assembly Chief Clerk Patrick Fuller were going to train her in self-defense. She said she told him she did not want to be trained.

I'm betting Hulsey gets indicted before Walker does.

Hey, the TSA is going to let you carry a Swiss Army knife on your next flight, so this should be no problem.

My Swiss Army knife with 3½ blade, definitely not!

So is being somewhat wacko a crime in Madison now?

If so they are going to need a much bigger jail.

Free Bret Hulsey!

And to Hulsey's aide . . .

No loyalty awards for you, sister.

A Democrat - how surprising.

So are Hulsey and Environmentalist Hulsey two different people, or is it a Jekyll/Hyde thing?

He's not "your" garage, he belongs to all of us, and it's rude to call attention to his extremely low wattage.

But will he recycle the bulb properly when he is done using it?

I doubt that the fully-leftist Dane County DA would prosecute.

I'm beginning to wonder if a Lonely Heart reportress with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel came on to Hulsey and was rebuffed with more enthusiasm than tact. They have been grinding axes in his direction for quite some time. They even go so far as to point out what party he's in, which makes him a kind of de facto republican.

On the other hand, entia non sunt multiplicanda. Perhaps he's just a loon.

What in the world is "half-darkened"? Wouldn't "dimly lit" or just "dark" be better? Where is the the halfway mark between total darkness and maximum lighting, and how did the reporter quantify it?

Only once in his [Clark Clifford] long career did he step out of character, and that was when he referred to President Ronald Reagan as an ''amiable dunce.'' The remark was made at a private dinner party but, unknown to Mr. Clifford, a tape recording had been made so that the hostess, who was ill with the flu and unable to come to her own party, could hear what was expected to be some sparkling conversation. Excerpts from that tape were published out of context.

Mr. Clifford explained his remark this way: ''In the fall of 1982, President Reagan said he would cut taxes by $750 billion, substantially increase defense expenditures and balance the budget in the 1984 fiscal year. Those were public promises. I made a comment that if he would accomplish that feat, he'd be a national hero. If, on the other hand, it did not work out after such a specific and encouraging promise and commitment, I thought the American people would regard him as an amiable dunce.''

Given the opportunity some time later to retract his remark, however, Mr. Clifford declined to do so.

Hulsey apparently has no qualms about tossing children off of inner tubes or carrying weapons around while demanding people learn to disarm him.

I can see how each of these things could have happened in an innocent way, but there are many incidents and they each appear to cause people to feel he's a little off.

It's a little weird. If he committed a mass murder people would say "How could you have ignored those signs?"

You can't spell environmentalist without mental.

Just sayin'.

I'd think a box cutter "without the blade extended" would be fairly useless for self-defense. What was going to do with it? Throw it? Use it as a wee club?
