A culture of sexual abuse at NYC's elite Bronx High School of Science.

Students against students in the under-supervised boys' locker room.
[E]mail from [he athletic director, Marion] Dietrich reveals that school officials have known about the behavior for at least three years and that bullying students had gotten so out of hand that Dietrich assigned coaches to patrol the boys’ locker room.
The "bullying" in question was serious sexual assault, which you can read about at the link.

"what is ok for some students is not necessarily ok for others"

What a stupid statement. Sounds like she is excusing the perp student.

Back in my day it was Atomic Balm in the jock strap, forcibly applied.

Not nearly as homo.

Wait. This may not be a crime. Gay rights and shut up !

Is Diallo any relation to the guy who got shot like 30 times?

Not nearly as homo.

Still pretty homo.

Could the Boy Scouts use this story to defend their policy against gays?

BarrySanders20 said...

Hazing and bullying don't describe the conduct accurately.

Mitchell, I recall the tub of Atomic Balm. That was old-fashioned lockerroom hijinks.

Matt Sablan said...

I really think we're starting to misuse the word bullying.

Not nearly as homo as Skin Lube(tm) forcibly administered by senior lettermen between one's then-freshman cheeks.

Under no circumstances should an adult male ever be in a boys locker room unless they are continously visible on security cameras or with (at least) two other adults preferably one an Administrator. I don't care if the students are assembling AK-47's for incipient revolt, manufacturing drugs wholesale or selling underclassman into bondage. ESPECIALLY NOT if there are sexual shenanigans being perpetrated by students. All it takes is one student to say "Mr. So & So pulled his penis out and showed it to us" and you're on the evening news and NO ONE will believe anything you say. NO ONE. I have been a Union Building Rep for over 30 years and I counsel all new male teachers to give male restrooms and locker rooms a wide bearth. If the Administration needs them supervised they should hire ample security for the job. New male teachers seldom understand how the system works in reality.

Wow, NYC High schools student culture is becoming like that of a prison, complete with a rape sub-culture.

Look for the Union Label!

But, but, but, but this is a Science Academy. It can't possibly be responsible for sexual abuse. Only those places where people believe in mythical beings in the sky.

RE: Atomic Balm Yes, that and its twin Red Hot. (One was slightly hotter than the other, but I can't remember which)

So its come to that, eh? Such worries were inconceivable in the small rural (tho college) town I grew up in in the 50s Middle-West..

Addendum: Scenario - Male teacher goes into Boys bathroom and catches two students smoking a cigarette. He then reports them to the proper Adiministrative House. No way would he ever put his hands on them to drag them to the Admin Office. The two students are then brought into the Admins office by Security. In te interim they havde concocted a story that the teacher that caught them smoking actually pulled out his penis and waved it around. There are now two individual's words against the teacher's word. And two crying traumatized children, stc., etc., etc. And now you have a teacher in serious trouble. As a Union Buiding Rep I've seen this exact scenario happen.

My brother spends summers as a counselor at a very tony boys' camp in New England. He, being a twentysomething former Marine combat veteran, is not easily shocked, nor is he a prude by any stretch of the imagination. But he said he is thoroughly uncomfortable with the level of sexual sophistication/cynicism and the exploitative attitudes that border on predation that he sees in those boys, some as young as 13. He wonders what is going on in their upbringing that fosters that--is it their parents? The porn?

Sounds like the Philby/Burgess/Maclean business in the old English public schools.

She does come off as kind of a cougar/MILF in the photos.

Especially the second.

Normal machismo.

And, no, liberals aren't going to find a solution to that. It's human nature.

Adolescent boys (and girls, too, for that matter) are savages.

@edutcher - She's lesbian. 100% Lez (not that there's anything wrong with that). I've seen her exact type of teacher for decades. There are subtle clues that civilians miss.

Shouting Thomas said...

Has anybody watched the Nat Geo specials on chimp and baboon behavior?

Our nearest relatives are pretty good indicators of what our own behavior would be like if it were not remediated somewhat by maturity and civilization.

Baboon society is organized around predatory males who enter the group from outside and fight every male in the group until they reach the top.

If they succeed, they gain the rights to every female in the group and they kill all the infant children in the group so as to eliminate offspring of competitor males.

Adolescent human males are not yet educated, civilized or mature enough to either refrain from this behavior or mask it in societally acceptable ways.

edutcher said...

Not my type anyway, but, as there are women that think they can turn a homosexual man, there are probably guys that have similar thoughts about women.

Especially at 16.

@edutcher - You know what they say - no woman is ever more than six tequila shots away from bi-sexuality.

Sexual assault =/= bullying. Most states have must report laws concerning knowledge of sexual abuse. If New York does not have such laws, they should.

Please tell us with what ethnicities this is not ok?

So according to NY teachers and administrators it is OK to sexually assault juvenile boys in certain cultures and we're not supposed to do anything about it .Like maybe throwing the perps and coaches into concrete boxes for the rest of their lives.

Lord of the Flies, people. Anyone who works with children should be required to read it annually.
And bring back corporal punishment. Some children need a good thrashing.

Geoff Matthews said...

I read this after I posted initially:

“You need a good fingering, you freshman,” Diallo, 16, said before he used his finger to sodomize the teen through his shorts while he was held down, a criminal complaint said.

In a separate incident, Berkmans, 17, said to the freshman, “Touch my penis for three seconds or I will rape you,” according to the complaint.

When the younger boy refused, Berkmans bent him over and pressed his crotch into the teen’s backside through his pants, the report said.

Did I say a good thrashing? I was being too lenient. I think caning would be appropriate, and bamboo is cheap.

traditionalguy said...

Today "Bullying" means that since the teachers and administrators have refused to discipline students they unexpectedly now need another set of special teachers and administrator jobs created and staffed to do that basic part of their jobs.

@Geoff - Teacher Maxim #2 - Schools worked better when we beat students for minor infractions. It instilled fear of adults and compliance of the students.

In a few years this forced gay stuff will be required curriculum, along with sensitivity training for bestiality.

Shouting Thomas said...

@Surfed,

That was funny.

Liberals seem to want to solve the purported "problem" through therapy and lots of security guards.

You think POGO is over-the-top? Just wait..

(Remember when some people said the govt-led legal assault against tobacco was but a fore-runner of govt assaults against all kinds of food and everybody laughed?)

virgil xenophon said...

PS: In case anybody missed it, about 10 years ago NJ middle-school educators/counselors were caught on audio tape teaching their students about the joys of anal "fisting" as a way to "feel comfortable with each other" and the proper technique to conduct same ("just put your fingers together and...")

Have a friend, child, or relative sexually assaulted in school?

Thank a union.

Renee said...

Al Lynch,

Short answer. Yes. Many times it is older scouts leading younger scouts. Not adults.

BSA has some good ground rules that at least two adults are around and two scouts are not to be alone.

A lot of honest discussions have occured, in fact allowing openly gay scouts. Meaning a scout shouldn't have to lie to be in scouts. What does openly gay mean? For example, one can be an openly gay Catholic and still not be committing a sin.

Sexual activity, even heterosexual lewd humor or talking about girls, isn't a part of BSA and will be addressed/disciplined.

@Jay - In the South the Unions are radiaclly different from The Nawth. Mine is almost worthless, but it does provide an attorney against baseless accusations. which are very, very common in my lne of inner city school teaching.

@Surfed,

I am impressed with your survival skills.

How much longer you indentured for? Is the end in sight?

I've seen my share of locker rooms and hazings, but this is off the charts. Bronx HS of Science used to be a place where Nobel Prize winners were groomed. What's going on there? It would be a comfort if these kids came from some third world shithole. Better than thinking that this is how our own bright kids act out their vulnerabilities.

If you think that this Dietrich broad is a looker, I suggest you get thicker glasses or higher standards of beauty.

To my knowledge, every woman with the last name Dietrich is an ugly old bag.

Michelle Dulak Thomson said...

I'm impressed (not in a good way) that there is someone teaching at Bronx Sci -- yes, even a coach -- who would send colleagues an email as typo-ridden and illiterately written as that.

I would love to know, too, exactly what Ms. Dietrich was getting at about different "ethnic backgrounds" (no, sorry, per Dietrich, that's "backrounds"). Also, how it is that the principal first heard about the abuse two years after it happened.

mccullough said...

These three track guys are going to be popular in prison.

The only people who can effectively handle bullying are the students. Teachers and administrators are useless.

The minute one kid starts picking on the others, the others need to kick the shit out of him. It's that simple.

@ShoutingThomas - One more year of DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program) for a total of 35 years inner city refugee and immigrant teaching. Teaching was a different profession when I started in the late 70's. The WWII generation of teachers and Administrators were still in charge of the public schools at that point. Those guys used to drive me crazy when I was in school but damn if they didn't know how to run public education. After charging through German and Jap bullets being frightened of or worried about some 14 year olds self esteem just wasn't part of the plan for the greater good. In the early 90's those guys all retired and lefty feel good "it's all for the children" types took over. One word - disaster. I sent my daughter to Catholic Schools. To do otherwise (in my city) would have been parental malpractice. 6 more report cards and then it's a Costa Rican beach and Imperial cervesa in for this old guy surfer. Public Education is a clusterfuck. Stick a fork in it. It's done.

Yikes! That's one of the schools whose offerings I've studied in coming up with homeschool plans. How could they let that happen? Appalling.

@Freeman Hunt/

FWIW/FYI I think The Calvert School out of Baltimore has the best overall home-school curriculum approach. Have you checked it out?

Freeman Hunt said...

Virgil, yes. They have some great stuff. I have to do things a little more personalized around here, so we can't use anyone's grade level full program, but I do like to look at the good stuff for ideas and resources.
