(Why? Because they're driven by profits? Is that worse than being driven by votes?)It might be better, because businesses have to offer something that moves you to part with your money. With a scheme of taxing and spending, government detaches the process of handing over our money from our thoughts about whether we think the benefits are worth it.
And by the way, businesses not only help people, they are people.
