28, Billionaire, married, WTF?

Genius my ass.

It seems to be a hard and fast rule of the internet that every celebrity "shows off." An example would be "Kate Gosselin Shows Off Her New Extensions."

Seems to me that Mrs. Zuckerberg is simply wearing a ring.

We are all getting dumber.

Yikes!

Back in summer 2008, my now-wife specifically did not want a diamond engagement ring and we found a beautiful ruby ring. Certainly not $25000. Less than a $1000.

The one I got was very affordable and exactly what she wanted, not because it was cheap, but because it was a ruby. Rubies carry their own meaning, are a beautiful color (as long as you avoid the super cheap pinkish ones) and offer a great way to just be different than the rest of the crowd.

Maybe Zuck bought the ring after the IPO and figured he'd better economize now.

July birthday?

Maybe the Zuckerbergs are Lord Peter Wimsey fans, and read in "Busman's Honeymoon" that the engagement ring he gave to Harriet was a solitaire ruby. :-) But so far as one can tell from a fuzzy photo, yes, it's a nice ring.

It is a very nice ring, and it is a pleasant surprise that some people still know how to be understated in public.

We all know, though, that at home they privately cackle as they play in their swimming pool filled with $100 bills.

I can't help but wonder why he waited to marry her until the day after the Facebook IPO. Was it to protect his newly-valued Facebook fortune as his separate property under California's community-property laws, which only apply to married couples? Of course, it's their business, but the timing after 9 years of being together seemed odd.

Not mentioned: She also got a pair of ruby slippers.

And she got him a crushed velvet hoodie.

Who is Kate Gosselin?

Maybe he was rather a bit busy in the days leading up to the IPO and didn't want to load getting married on top of all that, nor did he wish to have business interfering with his marriage ceremony. My guess is that if they ever divorce she won't be hurting for money.

Mr. Zuckerberg is a smart man. He didn't marry someone he met after he became a billionaire. He didn't ditch her after he became rich and famous. If I'm remembering right, she stayed with him after he dropped out of Harvard. So, neither of them left when things changed.

Honestly, when I first heard about the marriage I clicked on the article to see if he'd married some strikingly beautiful woman, and was pleasantly surprised when I saw that he hadn't. No offense to Ms. Chan, who is an attractive woman, but she's a doctor, not a model.

I'd say the marriage has a better than average chance of succeeding. When choosing a spouse it's important to pick someone who won't run when things get tough.

John,

I think your advice is good in general, but doesn't apply here. From Mrs. Zuckerberg's perspective, it is best to pick someone who won't run when things are phenomenally good -- when unlimited people are throwing themselves at Mr. Zuckerberg and he can do pretty much whatever he wants (the Kennedy syndrome).

I like it. Mom got a nice ruby ring on her 50th anniversary. Or maybe it was 40th. Anyway, I'm partial to them.

The timing was obvious. But so was Zuckerberg dumping a billion in stock immediately. I propose his name be changed to Suckerberg. (The number of Facebook insiders dumping stock is both astonishing and "no shit".)

What a beautiful bride!

The use of "show off" that I REALLY can't stand is saying a pregnant woman "shows off her bump". First, the use of "bump" is just silly.

Second, unless the woman is posing for one of those ridiculous Demi Moore-type photos, she's just going about her life as a pregnant woman. It's not like she can leave the "bump" at home.

I think Dr. Chan's ring is very nice. Not sure why a nice doctor would marry a con artist, though.

Yes, I guess? But she's actually prettier than most models, I think (although that is partly because I don't care for the look models seem to be selected for). She looks a little like Gong Hyo-jin.

Diamonds are boring.

Give me rubies and emeralds any day.

To adorn your naked man art?

Palladian said...

No, Scott, I like to adorn naked men with a pearl necklace.

I think diamonds are boring as hell, and prefer odd, vibrant colors like green citrine. I usually take a prejudicial, intense dislike to women sporting gigantic diamond engagement rings.

I'm surprised she goes out for lunch and strolls around without a few beefy armed bodyguards.
