"Nominees for the 2012 class of inductees into the Rock and Roll Non-Country Popular Music of the 1950s and Beyond Hall of Fame."

"First-time nominees include Heart, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, The Cure, The Spinners, Eric B. & Rakim, Guns N' Roses, the Small Faces/Faces, Rufus with Chaka Khan, and Freddie King. The Beasties and Chilis return to the ballot, as do Donna Summer, Donovan, Laura Nyro, and War. First-time eligibles this year but not nominated include Crowded House, Guided by Voices, the Jayhawks, Lyle Lovett, Salt N Pepa, Soundgarden, They Might Be Giants, and Yo La Tengo."

Says Adam at Throwing Things, pointing to a link to throw in your opinion.

My opinion is just that I love Donovan and Laura Nyro (and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a bit ridiculous, but I always pay attention and I've visited the place more than once).

Oh, for fuck's sake...why don't we just unilaterally put every recording and performing artist of the last 100 years into a PERFORMING ARTIST'S HALL OF FAME, every actor into an ACTOR'S HALL OF FAME, every writer into a WRITER'S HALL OF FAME, every beloved pooch (and I love dogs) into a BELOVED DOGS HALL OF FAME, and every human being alive into a HUMAN BEING HALL OF FAME, with each newborn automatically registered at the moment of birth?

Enough with the self-congratulatory narcissism of these shitty awards and awards ceremonies and halls of "fame" and other meretricious monuments to the ephemeral.

The Cure deserve it. Huge influence on the rock landscape in the 80's and 90's. From my humble POV Fascination Street is just about as complete an album as you can get.

Heh! Love the title for the post. I gave up years ago trying to explain to my son why all the non-rock pop stars kept getting inducted.

There are a few this year, though, who deserve to be inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall. Good for 'em.

The Cure sucks. If every other band is inducted into the POP MUSIC HALL OF FAME, they should be excluded.

Not sure what people are expecting here. I mean the nominating committee for the R&RHoF is a bunch of crusty old hippies.

The Spinners were one of the most consistent singles bands of the 70s. War was pretty good, too. Given the standards of the Rock and Roll HOF (which is worth a visit if you're in Cleveland), they both belong.

As little as I care about your opinion, especially of music, I would agree with you if the Cure was a pop act.

They are not, and thus should be excluded from any "pop" hall of fame.

You know nothing, Jon Snow.

There's only a few years in your life when you're aware of pop music. I like Laura Nyro and Donovan, but they were around when I paid attention to music. Perhaps some of the others are more talented. Anyway, I'm surprised that they have not already attained this meaningless honor. Poor Laura. She died in middle age: too old for haunting tragedy but too young for completion.

Robert Cook said...

"Does Robert Cook loathe meritocracy?"

It's hardly a meritocracy if, over time, every person who ever did anything is eventually honored in some sort of hall of fame or is awarded this or that ribbon, statuette, globe, or plexiglass gewgaw for his or her special specialness.

Well I agree with Robert Cook on this. Its only done for money.

Doubt Guns N' Roses will be inducted this year because Axl is touring as G-n-R without any of the other originals. (Reed joined in 1990.)

The tour — which launches October 28... is GN'R's first run of U.S. shows in more than five years. That also means it's the first time they've hit the road here since the 2008 release of their Chinese Democracy album...

The latest incarnation of GN'R features (of course) mastermind Axl Rose, plus guitarists DJ Ashba, Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal and Richard Fortus, bassist Tommy Stinson, longtime keyboardist Dizzy Reed (and another keyboardist, Chris Pitman) and drummer Frank Ferrer. The band hasn't played a show since a December 2010 date in Dubai, but will warm up for their U.S. run as only they can: with a series of massive dates in South America and Mexico.

Once again, the graybeards at Rolling Stone totally screw over every popular prog band from the 70's - Rush, Styx, Kansas, Boston, Yes, Genesis... for pop bands and session guys from the 50s and 60s.

Ridiculous.

timmaguire42 said...

Just for exclusivity's sake, every few years they should decide not to induct anyone. But Guns 'N Roses deserves it. Remember what heavy metal looked like before they came along? They saved the genre.

Wait, Yes is not in the Hall yet?

WTF ????

When they had Steve Howe and Wakefild and Squire together they were HOT HOT HOT.

I remember them filling stadiums.

I remember Frampton opening for them shortly after his MSG Live album, and they blew him off the stage.

I remember the J Geils Band opening for them in NYC and they blew them off the stage (and God Damn it they were hot back then).

Now I'm mad.

This must be Obama's fault.

Or Bush.

Or Alinsky.

Rush not being inducted is one of the reasons I don't really give a shit about this little overpriced Cleveland anomaly. Well, that and I was involved with the music business enough to know exactly how much political bullshit is involved.

Pop culture award shows are pointless. The great bands already know they're great. The voting was done when people bought their music and went to see their shows. All the rest is just preening for self-appointed self-important critics. Critics ruined rock and roll like they ruined the movies. Now it's all composition by committee and auto-tuned gimme gimme gimme (sex, respect, stuff, money) whining with a beat. Bleh.

Donovan is actually pretty amazing.

The Beastie Boys, by the way, have the coolest concert doc I've ever seen, Awesome, I Fuckin' Shot That. They gave hundreds of video cameras to people in the audience and then edited a kickass flick from the footage. It's way cool.

Fascination Street

Disintegration was the album. Fascination Street was the first single.

They should have stopped right then and foregone all the "Friday I'm in Love" bullshit.

The Cure had their moments, vacillating wildly between somber music and flights of fancy like The Love Cats and Why Can't I Be You?

Scott M said...

You are correct, sir. Point taken. After Disintegration, I enjoyed The Cure's b-sides (if there is still such a thing, lol) more than their albums.

Crowded House, or more specifically Neil Finn, should be inducted at some point. Pound for pound one of the best songwriters around. Really knows his way around a tune (though perhaps tends towards too many somber pieces).
And a great pop voice to boot.

Geddy Lee and Neil Peart have influnced scads of bass players and trommlers over the last 30+ years, not to mention how much influence Rush has had on rock bands in general. How many of Rush's albums have gone gold and platinum? And yet...never a mention at the "rock-n-roll" hall of fame. As other have mention, prog rock is also missing from their nominees. I've been to Cleveland several times, but since this isn't a serious rock museum I've elected to give it a pass!
