Who gets into an exclusive NY club? "Christians are our favorite."

Great quote, referring to a shoe brand. (Christian Louboutin.)

The linked NYT article brings up what was a big issue here in Madison a few years ago: Whether clubs with dress standards — excluding, for example, baggy jeans — are practicing racial discrimination.

In Madison? Talk about your hypotheticals.

Perhaps a bigger problem is the "plumber's crack" fashion epidemic among young men. It seems to bisect racial lines.

I had an uncle in late 50's who pioneered the trend in Richland Center.

Young, Great-looking women get in - no matter what.

Talk about gender discrimination.

chickenlittle said...

@rcocean: That just proves that gender discrimination is good.

Also, female butt cleavage is not a problem.

I don't patronize businesses that expect anything of me other than my money.

Never mind the Christians.

The angels want to wear my red shoes.

These places are soon going to find that they'd better get over themselves and look for people who can afford them.

That said, anybody whose pants' crotch is at his knees, and chickenlittle is correct - doofus transcends race, shouldn't be allowed on the streets, much less in any place serving food or drink.

Most black people dress better than me.

Same here. I patch my own pants.

Wow, dem darkies sure can dance and dress sharp.

Thanks for the racial stereotypes. Watermelon and chicken anyone?

Well if I ran an exclusive nightclub I'd admit women only if they met a particular standard. And you all know what that standard is.

Racist clubs in Madison - did they discriminate agsinst Swedes or Norwegians?

@Peter: I'm sure the sound of your club would be nice & quiet. Anything coming from inside would be muffled.

I know why young people (early twenties) go to clubs. Why do other people go to them? Why does anyone who can afford those shoes want to go to a club?

Also, I've been a young woman before. No one cares about what shoes a young woman is wearing.

Who doesn't like watermelon and chicken?

"I know why young people (early twenties) go to clubs."

I've never understood why anyone would go to a club (I'm assuming we're talking about the crowded, nasty, overpriced places that served watery spirits in plastic cups to the accompaniment of ear-splitting, thumpy electronic noise.)

I always thought it had something to do with drugs.

I've never been much of a club goer but I did boogie down one night in 1979 at Le Palace in Paris.

I once got into a club in Las Vegas right after Shaquille O'Neal was turned away by the bouncer because of his shoes. Mine apparently were nicer.

WV: therons. Charlize and her sister probably would have gotten in.

Add: Gays and shoe company execs.

Black people are always fly. Way better dressed than gays. They should have a "Black Eye for the White Guy" show. It shall air on MTV, which is to blacks as Bravo is to gays. If you air it on UPN, the "black eye" double-entendre is extra funny.

Want to talk about no fashion sense though? Our Mexican friends can help us there. Baggy pants and BALLCAPS? On a Friday night? What the hell? Black eyes all around.

Some gays I guess. I almost never notice anyone's shoes.

Freeman,

How about you and I go to Payless for a bogo sale and then stop off at Home Depot for a can of red enamel spray paint and some painter's tape.

Then we could get into the clubs without forking over $800+

At Six Flags last weekend there were many young men of many different hues wearing shorts belted below their derriers and two - count'em two - pair of undershorts. One pair of boxers over a pair of briefs or boxer briefs. So the nice pair of boxers would be the pair that was visible and the ratty (I assume) pair of briefs would stay hidden.

Of course, the two pair of under shorts could be so the fella didn't feel like he was going commando what with the boxers doubling as outer shorts along with the regular pair belted below the tuchas.

When i read tje headline i thiught, of course, the article concerned private clubs in New York, not night clubs. In either case i believe dress codes are perfectly fine and prohibiting baggy pants is especially encouraged. They are hideous and downscale to a degree that any "exclusivity" is hoped for then the baggy pants should be verboten

Until a few years ago women were excluded from membership in my NY privste club (no baggie pants. Yes coats and ties except for weekends). Alarms were sounded, discussions were held, a vote was taken. Women admitted. New locker rooms were constructed, new bathrooms put in place, great expense was incurred. Women were proposed for membership and went through the dog sniff and were admitted. They rarrely come, alas. I think they thought that men concocted deals at the club when they actually dined and worked out and took steam baths. When they discovered this to be the case the women lost interest.

Keepmtje baggy pants out of all "exclusive" clubs. Please!

Seriously. Watermelon is the food of the gods. I almost turned around to pick one up at a roadside stand this morning on the way to work and now I'm kind of wishing I had...

I was refused entry at a club here in town for wearing baggy pants. So clearly they are descriminating against 36 year old (at the time) white, conservative IBM employees. There can be no other answer.

"I've never understood why anyone would go to a club"
Drunk women. No idea why the women go.
