"A middle-aged woman known as SM blithely reaches for poisonous snakes..."

"... giggles in haunted houses and once, upon escaping the clutches of a knife-wielding man, didn’t run but calmly walked away. A rare kind of brain damage precludes her from experiencing fear of any sort...."

Well, they've always said there's a fine line between bravery and insanity.

Now we have proof.

We have such a strong sense of self, of having a distinct personality and mind independent of our physical body. It is strange to realize just how much of our "self" is pure biology.

This condition is at least well-enough known to have inspired an episode of "Law and Order: Criminal Intent" about 10 years ago. The villain had this condition, and Detective Goren figured it out and played him accordingly.

Is the No Fear company going to hire this woman? They should or they should change their name to Destroyed Amygdala.

The Tea Party has just instilled enough fear into enough Dem Senators to stop Reid's Porkulus III. How long is it until the next election?

EDH that made me laugh, even though the episode itself was pretty scary.

Did you happen to see the gunman's wife on TV today? She was smiling wide for the cameras while pretty much blaming the school board for her husband's actions. VERY bizarre.

amygdala? Is that anywhere near the medulla oblongata?

What does Mama Althouse have to say?

IOW, her condition makes her a ripe candidate for a Darwin Award since she's got no fight/flight impulses.

Traditional Guy, I met a black guy once; he told me his ancestry consisted of African, Comanche, Scots, Irish. Man, having read a lot of Louis L'Amour, I burbled, you have, running through you, the blood of some of the greatest fighting men in American history. Ah, said he, I didn't know that; that explains why my brothers and I are so combative. He went away quite excited at the thought of how his ancestry impacted on his behavior.
