"I can't wear flat shoes. My feet repel them."

Just one of many interesting things about Mariah Carey.
She insists on wearing high heels at all times, and has even been filmed in her stilettos while using her home-gym equipment.

I'm wearing crocs with wool socks until it warms up. My feet like crocs.

Faux crocs, actually. $7.99 at Kroger, in one of their speculative general merchandise purchases. One of them has been a little repaired with a piece of string, where the strap's swivel rivet has broken and fallen out.

But the soles aren't worn out yet or anything.

Just one of the minor costs of her pact with Satan, no doubt...

Wow, having just read the article at the link, I realized that 'pact with Satan' is the aptist(?) description of Mariah possible!

I can't watch Mariah Carey. Her shallowness repels me.

I haven't read the article, but I have trouble wearing flat shoes as well. When I wear flats to work, after 5 minutes of walking in them, they will literally scrape off the skin on the back of my heel, so that I am bleeding all over my shoes. This includes flats with soft backs, etc. I've tried all the styles. This is well-known among my co-workers too.

Also, if I wear flip flops for too long, I get plantar fasciitis in my right heel which really hurts. I end up limping. I can wear tennis shoes fine. Otherwise, my shoes have to be heels. I own stilettos for going out to clubs, but most of my shoes are not stilettos.

Whew, I guess there is a star who isn't feeling guilty about her carbon footprint. Which makes me think with amusement about the story making the rounds of Leonardo DiCaprio buying an Eco-friendly condo in NYC. So, he flies back and forth from coast to coast in a private jet and feels all sanctimonious because of the rotating solar panels the building has. Really, what a joke.

Check out Mariah Carey's contract rider which specifies, among other things, a bottle of Roederer Cristal and a box of bendy straws.

Ann Althouse said...

I think her contract rider is surprisingly modest (esp. compared to the stuff in the article I linked to). She is obviously immensely concerned with preserving her voice, with good reason. She seems most interested in having water, tea, and honey. The food demands are very modest. Lunch begins with minnestrone or black bean soup and so forth.

He is probably involved with his bud, Al Gore in that carbon trade off scam. You know if a guy, even a scientist, with an Italian name came up with that carbon trade off stuff, he would be in prison on RICO charges.

Yes, but it's 4 hours long and for 60 people.

I bet it is really her narcissism that rejects the flats as her legs likely look dumpy without heels.

I wouldn't mind repel onto Mariah Carey. Those mountains would allow for a swinging time. And the heels tilt her titties in such an interesting way.

Don't get me wrong, I can't stand her singing, but she is one hot steaming piece of bacala.

As is often the case, I have to agree with the Trooper, whom I have noticed has an encyclopedic knowledge of most things hot and sexual.

I'm just noticing.

What I find interesting about Mariah Carey is that she has no remorse about being a major influence in popularizing a style of singing that has ruined a whole generation of female vocalists. Satan indeed.

Orthopedic surgeons and podiatrists love high heels - after a while the bunions require surgery - nice cash flow.

That's too bad. I agree with SteveR. Too many singers can't hold a note, so they squirm and wail and call it emotional expression.

Her Achilles tendons and calf muscles have probably tightened up so much she can't wear flats. My 7 y.o. niece ran around on her toes for years--she may have the same problem.

A woman is a homely thing
But jack her up on stilts,
She's suddenly all shelves and tilts
Tingling mens' dingaling.

Monstrous

She sure employs a lot of people, directly and indirectly, doesn't she?

Think of all the (small "d") "divas" in the world who don't.

Her voice-preservation quirks, while perhaps a bit over the top, don't particularly raise my eyebrow, by the way. Musicians have their quirks.

The stories I could tell you about my own, non-famous but professional mother back in the day, and what, as a kid, struck me as an obsession with weather and humidity as they related to her reeds (which she hand-made and hand maintained for her oboes, English Horn and bassoon). My father wasn't quite like that with regard to his single-reeds, but boy, he sure could fuss over instrument joints, corks and such.

God help the child who messed with the thermostat, forgot to empty (or turn off, or on) a strategically placed humidifier, etc. etc. etc.

Only sayin'.

If she wears heels all the time it might be painful to go without.

For the rest of it... I really don't care how extravagant she is if she's nice to those who work for her. If she's nice to those who work for her then it's all good. (Including incidental "employees" at Hotels, etc.,)

She needs a good chiropractor.

(I'm willing to learn!)

Actually, I have no opinion of her whatsoever. I couldn't name a song she sings and I couldn't pick her voice out of a crowd. I probably couldn't pick her out of a lineup with Jennifer Lopez, uh...and some other pop divas I can't even name much less ID.

So I, uh, guess I don't consider any of this interesting. But here I am commenting.

OK, I'm avoiding work, I admit it. Let's talk about David Cassidy's salad days next.

It took me nearly a decade to adjust, without pain, to flats. I was leading a fairly athletic life of regular sports, but was never a walker or runner. Then one day I walked 2 miles in sneakers after dropping my car at the shop. I couldn't walk comfortably again for years in flats. Do you know how hard it is to find sneakers with a heel? I couldn't even play racquetball anymore because the lateral movement messed with the damaged bursa behind the Achilles tendon.

I don't know. I think I would like a woman who loved to wear high heels all the time, especially after she became my wife. Often the trend is toward extreme informality once you are married, with the sweatshirts, sneakers, and moo moo dresses suddenly appearing out of nowhere.

As for Mariah in particular, she has her appeal and is not an untalented singer. Sometimes it's best to separate the singer from the personna.

Nor do I think it was Mariah who started the trend of warbly all over the place dramatics in singing. You could find such things in black churches going back quite a bit. (Among other surprising things going on in black churches that seem to have caught certain people by surprise: Wright-style sermons of Old Testament Prophet wrath filled with bizarre reasoning).

While she is certainly not my preferred model of female singer (me leaning toward people like Sarah Mclachlan, Bjork and Lucy Kaplansky), Mariah does have a certain nasty girl appeal that might catch your attention if you thought nobody was watching you or judging your taste (in women, in music, or in female shoe attire).

Here, on Ann's blog, too many people are watching, judging, so the typical comment has to be:

"She is skanky and further, I am not familiar with her style of singing and frankly I can't tell any of those people who sing like that apart anyway", as though Jennifer Lopez and Mariah were duplicates in appearance and talent.

Hey, up yours, Finn. <--smiling when I say that

I really don't know her from Adam. Or J. Lo. Or...I dunno, someone people think of as "good".

I gave up on that trying-to-impress-with-music-cred when I was in high school. It got worse in college when I realized what I really like is polychromatic counterpoint. (Diggin' on di Lasso while the cool kids were in to Palestrina.)

She might be great. Though you know, I heard some Barbra Streisand a few years ago (for the first time) and was deeply impressed. I never listen to her music but she can do something that's beyond singing. (That should shoot my cred all to hell. Also, Andy Williams rocks!)

I simply dislike Mariah Carey- no matter what she does. I saw her on Oprah on Monday and was utterly disgusted by her attitude. She thinks she is the best and the most gorgeous woman. I found it hysterical that she was promoting her diet and her "dietician" on the Oprah show. Next thing coming from her is definitely a workout video. She was wearing leg warmers with high heeled shoes in the workout clip on Oprah. It further my dislike and disgust with her- which wasn't originally so strong. Celebrities are regular human beings- Mariah doesn't seem to realize this (they just have lots of money and are known in the media). But who likes the media anyways? She thinks she is the greatest thing going.

Every one has a comment

.. I just DON'T GET these people who seem to elect themselves as GRAND AUTHORITY OVER ALL FASHION.

Isn't choice of clothing a PERSONAL CHOICE.

What difference does it make to YOU what Mariah wear's - or what anyone else wears.

Its their choice like it or not.

If you don't like heels then don't wear them. Mariah does. Good on Mariah.
