UPDATE: A reader emails to charge that the disappearance is a hoax: "The whole disappeared while flying on a plane thing is lifted directly out of Dick's masterpiece We Can Build You, where an android Edwin M. Stanton gets in a plane and flies to see the protagonist's enemies." True?

Couldn't pass that one up....
The Stanton robot in We Can Build You does, indeed, take a plane to Seattle without permission. As to the hoax, I have no idea...but it would be a delicious idea.
Nevertheless, I vote for the more sinister idea. The robot is actually invested with Dick's consciousness, and decided it had better things to do. You build these things at your peril...
