From "He Wants to Be One With Nature. But He Can’t Quit Instagram. Once, Robin Greenfield aspired to wealth. Now, he has no home and eats from the earth. He chronicles it all on social media, but does the persona match the man?" (NYT).
I blogged about Greenfield a couple weeks ago, here, but there's different material in this NYT article and more skepticism about the man.
Also, here's the list of 100 things Greenfield came up with back in 2020 — positive changes he wanted to make in his life — to "live free of lies and corruption." Much of it is what you might predict from a radical environmentalist, so let me — a connoisseur of travel critique — focus on the part about travel:
-Explore the lands nearby you and enjoy trips in your region.
-Go on long cycling and hiking trips rather than traveling via fossil fuel powered transport.
–Minimize flying. Take trains and buses when possible.
-When you do fly, offset the carbon using the Gold Standard of carbon offsets and consider 3x (or even 10x) offsetting your carbon.
–Stay with people and not chain hotels. If using a hotel choose local sustainably run options. Find local hosts via websites like couchsurfing.com.
-Immerse with the community and avoid tourist traps and consumeristic holidays.
–Pass on the cruises. Cruise ships are one of the most destructive ways to travel.
You could be much more radical: Travel only by foot or bicycle. Camp out. Stay indoors only if you make a friend who willingly offers you a place to sleep.
I'm also interested in the critique of pet-keeping, and he's got something to say about that as well:-If having a pet doesn’t serve your best interest (or their best interest) then do not get a pet, or if you have a pet already do not get another pet after the one you have passes.
-If having pets, adopt and don’t support unnecessary animal breeding.
-Treat your pet like an animal, not an accessory. They don’t need all the plastic toys and accessories.
-Compost, bury, or put your pet waste in a biogas system and don’t put it into the landfill. (Composting dog or cat poop must be done separately from your compost for your food garden) Also, use repurposed paper to pick up poop rather than plastic bags.
That list implicitly makes the argument for the more radical position: No pets!

Thoreau lived alone but not far from the civilization he wanted to write for.
God knows, there's no shortage of mental illness in this country. But, this guy is pegging away at it just a little too hard, isn't he.
A positive change someone can make in their life to "live free of lies and corruption" is getting rid of instagram. Sadhus don't have instagram.
Something doesn't ring true about this guy. I want an audit.
And, all clothing is biodegradable, if worn long enough.
Well, he's right about cruise ships.
A bucket of poop in his room. Well he certainly one-upped the certified nut Howard Hughes, who only kept jars of pee in his room.
---- The difference between the mild-mannered online persona — an amalgam of Henry David Thoreau and the Dude — and the aggravated guy in the back seat was upsetting, she said
He has adopted some of the most extreme habits and positions anyone has even heard of..... how disappointing to discover he might not be polite, kind, and accommodating.
"She said..... " No comment.
In a free society, one may choose to enjoy an excess of property or an excess of self-determined virtue. In fact, many indulge in both simultaneously. We are attracted as a species to the purity of the quest, hence our fascination with the monomaniacal, be it Greenfield or Musk.
And the beat goes on.
If he wants to be part of nature, why is still in Brooklyn?
The only pure version of this that is free of hypocrisy is to stop sucking up the oxygen and self-compost. Digging the hole with your bare hands of course.
As long as we live, we always find obsession to comfort us.
I skimmed that Gold Standard offsets flying guidelines. He said he only flies economy because he's opposed to the roomier seats since the more people on the flight, the less carbon per person. By that reasoning, he should only fly standby. It doesn't matter who sits in a roomier seat and who is crammed in shoulder to shoulder as long as all of the seats are filled. Flying standby would help accomplish having more people filling what would be empty seats.
Another Fight Club reference; now Paper Street, that was asceticism.
He wants to live off the land, but he's hanging around NYC? Make it make sense.
"He wants to live off the land, but he's hanging around NYC?"
What good is virtue if nobody sees your sacrifice?
What would happen if, instead of flying and doing the “gold standard” offsets, people just reduced/eliminated flying and still did the offsets. Is it a serious problem or not?
"What good is virtue if nobody sees your sacrifice?"
This. Lifestyle evangelists are more noseblind than TV preachers ever were.
Checking and unchecking the boxes to figure out how similar his life is to mine and how different. I've always had a way to go before I hit rock bottom.
Pair this with the story about "toxic masculinity" (and "the crisis in masculinity"). Some (white) men now want to go through life doing and being nothing as a penance for past evils. Besides Thoreau, there is Tolstoy and the figure of the "guilty nobleman." In various periods, such men could be found on the American left, but they combined guilt with a hunger for power, not complete dispossession and passivity. I'm also reminded of a New Yorker story years ago about a guy who wanted to donate every organ he could donate and still remain alive. Because altruism.
Suicidal Altruism. Literally.
Weirdo social conceptions, progressions.
Ice Nine, like everyone else, Howard Hughes did indeed poop, although you are correct about not keeping it around. He kept the Mason jars of urine to keep track of his kidney issues (sanely or not, that seems to have been the reason) and his bed had plumbing to remove his feces. My 5 second inquiry to AI didn't mention a bidet, but who knows? He also had Mormon helpers to assist with personal cleanup. Hughes was about as far from asceticism as could be. He was a wealthy, but expensively pampered, paranoid germophobe at the end of his life.
Howard Hughes pooped?! Who knew? Thanks for clearing that up, mikee.
My point was that this guy is nuts like Hughes was, though Hughes' pee bottle nuttiness was contemporaneously explained as OCD. You describe him as a paranoid, which is true, so thanks also for corroborating that.
