"Rowers already using the river have procedures for reporting crocodile sightings and working around the animals, while local authorities work with crocodile managers…. One crocodile farmer told nine.com.au that the crocodiles in the Fitzroy River would be manageable as the water temperature would be too low and 'make them lethargic.'"
"River crawling with crocodiles is approved as Olympic rowing venue
The Fitzroy in Queensland, Australia, will host the rowing and canoe sprint events at Brisbane 2032, despite concerns from other nations" (London Times).
Crocodile farmer? I had to ask AI. I'm told it's mainly the production of what is a luxury leather — something like 40,000 skins a year — and there's also the "meat-and-tourism business."

I assume an Olympic athlete would be good eating. Much better than the usual tourist. The crocks are all sharing emails and recipes.
Norm McDonald on the Crocodile Hunter.
Sounds environmentally friendly and probably what rowers are used to experiencing.
"That's not a log over there" - advice from Florida. If it's wet, there's gators in it.
"Crocodile farmer?"
Malcolm Douglas. The actual OG Australian Dundee-archetype before Dundee, Bush Tucker Man and Crocodile Hunter were a thing. "Across The Top" and its follow-ons are masterpieces. Most of them are available on youtube.
Real adventure influencer before "influencer" was a thing, and ended up caring for the animals he'd once killed at his famous reserve in Broom.
Well at least they won’t have to worry about catching a crab
" I assume an Olympic athlete would be good eating. Much better than the usual tourist"
Disagree. Most tourists would be plumper with a higher fat to muscle ratio. Olympic rowers would be too sinewy.
Xtreme Olympics? Sound great! Put kangaroos on the track. Looks but as on the football pitch. Fun!
this could be The MOST EXCITING olympics.. EVER
i like the new event! it sounds terrorific! or at least horrific!
There's alligator farms in west Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Get your Everglades airboat tour while you're there.
Trump needs to crocodiles in the reflecting pool to keep all the Olympic rowers from vandalizing it which totally was a thing that happened.
Wife and I were watching some sort of outdoor adventure show on TV. The episode was about a group of men kayaking down a crocodile-infested African river. Towards the end of the show a croc grabbed the kayaker at the back of the gaggle of boats, pulled him out of his kayak, and the man was never seen again. Eventually they paid some local villagers to retrieve the kayak, which waa sti afloat.
How poor do you have to be to wade into a murky river just after a croc killed a cameraman?
My thoughts, exactly gilbar.
Trump living in DDs head 24/7 rent free.
Big Mike pointed out..
How poor do you have to be to wade into a murky river just after a croc killed a cameraman?
cameramen! in their own kayaks! sounds tasty!
much easiy pickings (and more digestable) than athletes!
but, what they NEED, is spectators in their own kayaks too!
fat, juicy, DELICIOUS spectators.. just floating in the water watching
what these new games NEED, is an auto race

I give you now Professor Twist,
A conscientious scientist,
Trustees exclaimed, "He never bungles!"
And sent him off to distant jungles.
Camped on a tropic riverside,
One day he missed his loving bride.
She had, the guide informed him later,
Been eaten by an alligator.
Professor Twist could not but smile.
"You mean," he said, "a crocodile."
Crikey, just give each coxswain a rifle.
"Crocodile farmer?"
Really?! You didn't know farming crocodilians was a thing? You have apparently have never been to Florida, where if the Interstate billboard isn't advertising a strip club, it is advertising a gator farm.
From Wikipedia: "Gigantothermy is a biological phenomenon where large, bulky animals maintain a steady, warm body temperature simply because their massive volume traps heat much faster than their small surface area can lose it." This is why the temperature of the Fitzroy River is unlikely to deter the most dangerous crocodiles, the really big ones.
The Olympic rowers will be pretty safe based on the saltwater crocs' normal hunting behavior. As a rule, they don't attack boats unless they have been conditioned to expect food associated with boats, such as tourist cruises through croc-infested waters. To thrill the sightseers, the boat operators will provoke dramatic behavior from the animals with chickens. This is illegal, but it still happens. Assuming the stretch of the Fitzroy reserved for the Olympics has been vigorously patrolled by wildlife officers who enjoy arresting idiots who feed crocodiles, the problem of boat attacks should be eliminated. However, people ashore will remain at risk. It's simply impossible to work with a racing shell without being near or in the water up to your waist. Large land-dwelling animals that come to the water's edge, such as thirsty kangaroos and foolish humans, are the saltwater croc's natural prey. Thus, tt will be the coaches, the boat technicians, and other supernumeraries who will be in danger, not the rowers while actively rowing.
Given the outsized expense of most Olympic events, it would not be impractical to install a powerful refrigeration plant near where the shells are to be launched to reduce the local water temperature to around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. That chill should deter even the biggest and baddest salties on record.
I was an official for USRowing for 25 years. The Queensland venue is unacceptable, but FISA (World Rowing governing body) signed off on it because there was no alternative presented that could be constructed in time. For the upcoming Olympics in LA, the Long Beach venue is only 1500 meters (versus the standard 2000 meters), and racing will be completely different than the norm in terms of strategy and physiology--TV dollars rule, don'tcha know? Besides, the Australian venue will also be used for the canoe and kayak flat water racing, so triple the chance of some chum being added to the water.
Should improve their times.
Maybe they can hold some swimming events there. And give the swimmers an incentive to break some records.
There was a young rower from Sydney
Good luck and good fortune he bid me
Then two hours later
That weren’t no ‘gator
And all there was left was his kidney
Curious George, thanks for the Norm McDonald link. Ha!
"Eight-man crew is the most difficult team sport in the world." From the movie, "Boys in the Boat."
Now made more difficult!
When a stroke is off beat, it is called "catching a crab."
At Stienhart, kids on field trip would pelt crocs and alligators with pennies in attempt to get them to react :
"Eventually, the aquarium directors had to clamp down heavily on the penny-tossing, installing aggressive warning signs and sending biologists into the pit with hoses to clear the coins away. When the old aquarium finally closed for its massive mid-2000s structural rebuild, historians noted that older alligators that had passed away over the decades were found to have thousands of dollars worth of school-trip pennies sitting in their stomachs."
No, the flavor is in the fat: "I assume an Olympic athlete would be good eating."
Must be the Bear Bryant school of motivational coaching. Give the coxswains a rifle.
Cool. It's kind of like "The Running Man."
"I dont have to out-row the crocs. I only have to out-row you."
“Well at least they won’t have to worry about catching a crab”
There is still the Olympic Village and what the athletes do there.
I've been to the Thaba Kwena Crocodile Farm in South Africa more than 26 years ago now. They taste like chicken only a little rubbery. Perhaps that's what they serve at conventions.
Crocodile runner.
Empathetic rowers. Caw! You've been warned.
"Disagree. Most tourists would be plumper with a higher fat to muscle ratio. Olympic rowers would be too sinewy."
I stand corrected. I never argue with someone who has experience in things I don't. I never eaten an Olympian, although I've seen some I would like to try.
Wagu beef is from cattle that are suffering from advanced metabolic disorder. Much like most American tourdists.
Back when I was kayak fishing from the coast off Carmel all the way up to Pigeon Point and parts in between at least 1 or 2 kayak fishermen would get their boats bitten by great white sharks. I'm positive that I wouldn't be able to hold my mud kayak fishing in Waters infested with saltwater crocodiles.
" I stand corrected. I never argue with someone who has experience in things I don't."
I'm pretty sure that our experience in eating Olympic athletes is the same. However, I, and I guess you, have eaten plenty of meat and noticed which cuts are tastier.
Never smile at a crocodile,
No you can't be friendly with a crocodile.
He will lure you in
With his welcome grin,
But he's imagining how well you'll fit
Within his skin!

In one of GM Fraser's Flashman books crocs play a part, but he calls them muggers.
This sounds like it will add an interesting component to the sport. If a kayaker tips his kayak he has to wrestle a crocodile. Whoever gets out with all his limbs intact wins a medal.
One crocodile said to the other, "I have a toothache."
The other crocodile said, "Why don't you see a dentist?"
The first crocodile said, "Because I'm a crocodile."

we are sexually attracted to men that kill executives
we celebrate the anniversary of a free speech advocate being shot
we bemoan that fact that Presidential shooters slightly missed
we adore, and WORSHIP death in ALL its forms
we PRAY to MOLOCH for help in our killings
this new Olympic sport is right down our alley
we western people are sick, and NEED to be PROUD of our sickness
Planned preyhood is the epicurean's Choice.
"In one of GM Fraser's Flashman books crocs play a part, but he calls them muggers."
Did you ever wonder about the term mugger, i.e. a knife-armed urban thief who preys on pedestrians, mainly women? Well, it derives from Hindi through British colonial experience. Magar is the the Hindi word for crocodile, but it was borrowed into English as mugger, which remains the common name for for the SE Asian freshwater croc, Crocodylus palustris. Muggers have earned a nasty reputation for attacking humans, mainly women and girls doing laundry, from beneath murky, opaque waters. Therefore, it's quite natural to extend that meaning to include humans who attack women in the dark.
Let's face facts, yes... all's fair in lust and abortion. Is an evolutionary, empathetic coup de grace, perhaps.
I propose that the committee that approved this be required row the course 4 times a day for 3 months.
'Make them lethargic'
....being slowly eaten by a crocodile vs quickly.
Just add some sharks to take care of the crocodiles. Or is it the other way around?
How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!
How cheerfully he seems to grin,
How neatly spreads his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in
With gently smiling jaws!
"Crocodile farmer?"
As a point of order, farms? I could say Crocodile Ranch, livestock operation, a Crocodile feed lot, in Australia a Crocodile Station, but not a farm, who would sew the seed?
Now, fellow Althousians, it is time to put things in their natural order. While it seems right to use gator and croc as approximately interchangeable names, it is not. In fact, human and monkey are more correctly interchangeable terms than crocodile and alligator. The alligator clade split away from the crocs and gharials at least 87 million years ago. Since then they been on a different evolutionary track from the others.
Though a crocodile and an alligator closely resemble one another outwardly. On the physiological level they are remarkably different. For one thing, All members of the Alligatoroidea have lost the salt-management organs still present in the crocodile family. Consequently, they're unable to migrate across ocean water. For another, they have adapted to much more temperate climates than their distant cousins. Wild American alligators have been documented as far north as New Jersey and as far west as Austin, Texas.
Rowers already using the river have procedures for reporting crocodile sightings and working around the animals."
Any procedures for an attacking croc?
Having these guys around certainly provides an incentive to get to the finish line first and fast.

Not after reading that book (F. and the Mountain of Light?).

The left wing Olympians assume the crocodiles will eat them last.
Crocodile, crocodile
Please eat us last!
Or at least wait until DSA's time is past
Of the rightwing olympians?
Please eat your fill
If your belly's full
It's only time you'll kill
You shan't be tamed
Nor overpowered
But we shan't be maimed
Or devoured
If we close our eyes will you go away?
Our naivete keeping you at bay?
But those rightwing Olympians
Better say their prayers
We got ours
Please go eat theirs
"River crawling with crocodiles is approved as Olympic rowing venue The Fitzroy in Queensland, Australia, will host the rowing and canoe sprint events at Brisbane 2032, despite concerns from other nations"
I predict records will be broken.
So Australia will have managed to have had the Olympics in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane? How do they manage to pull that off? We've had the winter games at three venues, but for the summer games it's always Los Angeles (and the long ago, unimpressive St. Louis games in 1904).
Sorry, forgot about Atlanta. Still, good on you, Aussies.
Personally, I'd like to hear Bluey and Bingo's take on this.
Lazarus, most US cities have a common sense contingent of citizens willing to block and then knock down the flighty thinking of those who would sponsor these foolish games. They remember Montreal's costly experience

"So Australia will have managed to have had the Olympics in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane? How do they manage to pull that off?"
Especially because it's not even summer in Australia at that time of year. (Yes, I know they have very mild winters, but still...).
If they somehow managed to get Rachael "Raygun" Gunn to join their rowing team and combine her Aussie "breakdancing" skills as they glide betwixt the crocodiles it would be the television event of the year.
The organizers should ride shotgun.
*Trump needs to crocodiles in the reflecting pool to keep all the Olympic rowers from vandalizing it which totally was a thing that happened.*
Once again - on a subject that has absolutely nothing to do with Trump - some asshole has to make it about Trump.
I ate some crocodile meat at The Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi, Kenya. It tasted like chicken, but was chewy.
Tasted ‘gator years ago in Orlando… an appetizer 😆… tasted like pencil eraser.
Australia should introduce Olympic rowing biathlon as a demonstration sport, combining the traditional rowing disciplines with precision rifle shooting. Or make it a triathlon by adding cycling or swimming.
"Tasted ‘gator years ago in Orlando… "
There's bound to be more alligator meat prepped, served, and eaten in Florida than anywhere else in the United States by at least a couple orders of magnitude. Probably every tourist and spring break reveler has been tempted by gator tacos or gator kabobs. The problem is street foods aimed at tourists are not good enough examples of anything to fairly judge the gustatory potential of any dish. I'm willing to bet that if McDonalds starting offering a fast food version of bouillabaisse, it would end up being a fishy brown goop served in a Styrofoam bowl, i.e. nothing worth trying a second time. The same is true of alligator meats (there are at least two distinct kinds) -- don't judge it until you've eaten it prepared like to ought to be. Fortunately, I know two restaurants that fit the bill. They're both in Fort Lauderdale, and they each specialize in different cuts of the saurian:
LuLu's Bait Shack is a Cajun cuisine establishment that just about the whole gamut of Louisiana eating. Their alligator dishes are usually prepared from the caudofemoralis muscle, the tenderloin cut, as it were. This is the most chicken-like part, though it also reminds me of veal.
The other is the G&B Oyster Bar. Their specialty is gator ribs, which call for a slow, moist, barbeque approach. The ribs are pork-like, but richer than most pork ribs you're likely to find anywhere but in the South. I would compare it to wild boar ribs, rather than factory farm raise pork.
Gators seem like they would have a lot of meat on them, and I don't feel at all bad about eating one. Even when young, they are not cute, and never look innocent. Besides, he wouldn't mind twisting my leg off and eating it right in front of me. Fuck gators.
It looks like that RACIST Sunny Hostin of the View is in a bit of trouble for her lying big mouth again. The three boys who were with Nolan Wells, the black boy who drowned in Mississippi this summer are suing her for defamation. It's about time she is called out and sued.
