Another thing to hate about "AI" getting into the hands of the general public is that it enables new kinds of scamming and enables people who were previously limited by their lack of culture and literacy to scam in new ways.
The day my new book was released (Tuesday), the scam stuff started. First was the surprisingly long email praising the book in detail--though in detail that was suspiciously like someone had massively expanded the publisher's description on Amazon. The email-writer was outraged (!!) that the book wasn't ranked high enough on some Goodreads list. But this kind soul--who absolutely LOVED my work despite the book being 300+ pages long and having been released all of 12 hours previously--was going to use her "ecosystem of real readers motivated by the love of great writing" to fix that problem if I could just give her a credit card number not to pay off readers, but to support "ecosystem maintenance."
Then came the invitation to speak about the book to a book club in Seattle that met both in person and online (and claimed to have over 4,000 members!). I asked how they handled Q&A via Zoom, and was told that they were "asynchronous,"--the "members" wrote questions that I would answer in writing and then they'd distribute my answers and talk about them at one of their meetings, all for the low, low price of $150 dollars for incidental expenses...
And then today it was a phone call from someone at "Interscript" with a somewhat heavy accent who was excited to talk to me about what "they" had "discovered" in my book, because I probably didn't realize that if publicized to the right people I'd be an intellectual hero, and all I needed to do was pay $1,500 . . .
To be fair, this is the first time I've had a book come out with a major press (all previous books were with academic publishers), so it's possible that this stuff happened before AI, but I doubt it. Clearly the hook is that you get a long email or a long phone message that at first glance came from someone who read the book and cared enough about it to write at length about how much they love it.
Which means that length of message--which used to be a bit of a proxy for sincerity--if only because the person had to take the time to do all that typing--is no longer useful. (Sort of how length in blog comments used to indicate at the very least effort--or mild psychosis...)
The scam also plays on the excitement of new authors who have a justified need for validation and an entirely unrealistic, romantic notion of how long it takes after a book is released for it to find those readers who care enough about it to write long letters to an author.
People who prey on hope and exploit naive excitement deserve to be thrown into an open sewer.

Well, this is purely speculation on my part but the timeline actually supports the idea that Cole could have been influenced early, not that he’s a “lefty plant” or acting randomly.
As I recall the well documented 2019 messaging, Trump repeatedly planted the idea that the only way he could lose is if the election is rigged or stolen — in speeches, interviews, and social media posts.
So if someone like Cole was radicalized, politically obsessed, or already leaning toward extreme action, 2019 could be a prime time to start planning — not because Trump “caused” it, but because the narrative that “the election could be stolen” was already being hammered constantly.

This is an area that always boggled me about election deniers- Trump repeatedly laid out the game plan and told them how to react his entire 1st term- the only way HE could lose if THEY stole it from THEM (Dems stole Trump from MAGA and MAGA must get mighty mad). The plan was openly laid out.

Coincidentally, I happen to know quite well a young man on the autism spectrum who, in support of one of the rallies the left has organized over the past almost-year, undertook to defend the rally-goers - by showing up with weapons on his person and probably functional bombs (he's very meticulous) in his car. Law enforcement got involved when someone spotted his holster. He is a genuinely sweet guy who would never want to hurt another person - but he was certainly impressed by the rhetoric that MAGA people were going to show up and attack his fellow Democrats, and so he, in his own mind, chose to stand between the Democrats and their MAGA attackers.
It's awful for him and his family, and thank God he didn't see any signs of the "MAGA attackers" before he was detained.
