"The remaining 13 living hostages in Gaza have been transferred into the hands of the Red Cross, the Israeli military said in a statement."

The NYT reports, 51 minutes ago, in its excellent live coverage.

45 minutes ago: "As Trump makes his way through the Knesset to give his address, it is clearly a friendly crowd, even among many in the Israeli opposition. In the audience, some are wearing red MAGA-style baseball caps, emblazoned with the words, 'TRUMP THE PEACE PRESIDENT.' The question now is whether, in his speech, Trump casts the war as over — words that Netanyahu and members of his coalition have refused to utter."

7 minutes ago: "The Egyptian government just announced that both Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, and Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, will participate in a high-level regional summit about Gaza being convened later today in Egypt."

Excellent?

They're not showing any photographs of the released hostages. The BBC is really getting into the emotion of how happy people are about this. The NYT is dry and cold. They're talking about the release of the hostages. But, for some reason, they have no interest in showing us the hostages.

BBC photographs are provided by the IDF. Presumably, news organizations are not allowed access to the hostages just yet. So you can either go with the photographs released by the IDF (which BBC is doing). Or you can skip it, I guess, as the American media is doing.

Our media has a history of running photographs provided by Hamas. So, no, I would not call the NYT coverage "excellent."

You think the BBC is running propaganda for Israel?

I'm talking about capturing the humanity of the hostages and the inhumanity of what happened to them. Our leftist media has been swamping us with images from Hamas, including photographs of a child who had a medical condition, claiming that Israel was responsible for the horrible suffering. The media had to apologize for its dishonest reporting. Because it was relying on Hamas propaganda.

I know there was a war, and propaganda is always a part of warfare. But our media, for two years, has been running Hamas propaganda uncritically. And when Israel offers photographs of the rescued hostages, only the BBC published them?

Weird. Super-fucking weird. I call the NYT out for its leftist bias and it's pro-Hamas slant, which is obvious to everybody. Not a neutral source, Althouse, but definitely a cruel one.

It seems like she desperately needs good journalism from The New York Times. A tidbit of accidental journalism is all she needs. Sometimes it feels like the blog is an advice column for the NYT…Please!! The cries will be ignored. They told everyone they were abandoning journalism because Trump. I encourage everyone to go back and read it- makes so much more sense now…

Saint Croix म्हणाले...

I suspect that American media -- instead of competing for stories -- often relies on shared narratives that the journalists attempt to create. Althouse spotted one the other day.

This might sound like a conspiracy theory, but they're actually quite upfront about it.

One mechanism by which American media is taught to organize and unite around a certain idea is the The AP Style Guide.

It is the AP style guide that teaches journalists to never ever say "pro-life" or "pro-lifers," and to always say "anti-abortionists." It is the AP style guide that teaches journalists to say "fetus" and to never say "unborn baby."

Unless the subject is not abortion, in which case it's perfectly fine to say unborn baby.

The AP Style Guide is very clear on this shit. They send their guide out to newspaper rooms across the country.

See also the NYT and their insane, not-yet-aborted idea to replace 1776 with 1619.

See also how all media, everywhere, started capitalizing Black a few years ago, and only that skin color. Over night, they did this! Propaganda, pure and simple. Not journalism.

Now, I don't know specifically why our media refuses to accept any photographs from the IDF, while they routinely, for two years, published Hamas photographs. Why would journalists pick one side in a war, and the wrong side at that?

What interesting to me, is that the BBC -- who apparently was left off the conspiracy e-mail chain -- is now happily publishing photographs of the rescued hostages. They are getting the story. While our incompetent American media is missing the story, either through stupid rule-following or a (subconscious?) desire to miss this particular story.

James K म्हणाले...

While I heard about the Qatar attack, I was unaware that Israel had gone after Hamas' leadership. We didn't get that reported in our media. And whoever decided to describe Hamas' leadership as "negotiators," holy fuck. Oh yeah, Israel is trying to kill diplomats in Qatar.

Anyway, my assumption is that Trump secretly okayed the missile attack on Qatar. And it was that attack, on Hamas leadership, that finally brought an end to this war. Morally, it is similar to Obama giving the green light to Navy SEALS to invade Pakistan and kill Osama bin Laden.

Maynard: that's fair. The attack was a tactic that took place within an overarching strategy.

Jaq म्हणाले...

"You accuse of being conspiratorial and then claim without basis that the base in Idaho is a tit for tat because of the raid on Hamas in Qatar"

That was Howard. I was just responding to all of this noise I keep seeing in the threads about Qatar having a base in Idaho. You probably have better facts than I do, it wouldn't bother me if they did, but I just suspect that, should such a base actually exist, it would be reciprocating Qatar's hosting of a giant US base, nothing to do with the attack.

Whether the WaPo can be trusted or not is not even a question, of course they cannot be trusted, but when what they say makes sense, we have to remember that they have access to sources who know the real facts of the matter. You can't dismiss them out of hand or you are just making stuff up out of thin air.

Key events include:
Rejected request for funding: In April 2017, Charles Kushner (Jared's father) met with Qatar's Finance Minister to seek an investment of just under a billion dollars from Qatar's sovereign wealth fund for the Kushner Companies' troubled 666 Fifth Avenue property. Qatar declined the request. A previous potential deal for $500 million had also fallen through in 2016.
U.S. policy shift: Shortly after the rejected funding request, the U.S. administration's policy toward Qatar shifted dramatically. Jared Kushner reportedly advocated for the blockade of Qatar by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, overriding the advice of the State and Defense Departments.
Later investment and "bailout": More than a year later, in August 2018, a Canadian real estate firm, Brookfield Asset Management, finalized a $1.28 billion deal to purchase a 99-year lease on the 666 Fifth Avenue property, effectively rescuing it from debt. The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) was a minority investor (with a 7% stake) in the subsidiary of Brookfield that executed the transaction, leading to criticism that Qatari-linked funds were indirectly involved in a "bailout" of the Kushners.
Post-White House investment: After leaving the White House in 2021, Jared Kushner launched his own private equity firm, Affinity Partners, which received significant investments from Gulf nations. A Qatari entity invested around $200 million in his firm, a move which some Qatari officials were initially hesitant about due to political risks. This was part of a total of around $3 billion raised by Affinity, most of which came from foreign sovereign wealth funds, including $2 billion from Saudi Arabia.
While no formal extortion charges have been proven in court, the timing of these events and the investments from countries Kushner dealt with as a senior White House official have led to investigations and concerns from ethics experts and Democratic lawmakers regarding potential conflicts of interest and the appearance of a quid pro quo. Kushner has maintained that he fully abided by all legal and ethical guidelines.

It sounds like we're going to have a military presence in Gaza for a while. Especially if European money is used to rebuild Gaza and make it nicer. I would prefer Egyptian troops, or Iraqi troops, or Saudi troops. I don't envy Mr. Trump trying to make this deal work. I'm not sure if they are thinking about an American military base in Gaza. Trump was a huge critic of Bush's "nation building." And building a free Palestine is only 1000 times more difficult. Obviously, Israeli running the Gaza strip is a bad idea. But nobody else wants to do it, either. And Hamas just wants to kill Jews. What a mess. The war in Iraq was quick and easy, but trying to establish a republic in Iraq was a real sinkhole for us. Maybe Trump can sweet talk the Saudis into annexing Gaza, spending some money, and handling security. I think, while Trump has some negotiating power, he ought to be stressing the importance of the Middle East handling Gaza, and providing security for its vulnerable people.

Worst case, we can always put the UK in charge of Gaza. They are practically a Muslim state anyway. Maybe Trump can swindle Keir Starmer and have him commit the UK to 10 years of providing security to Gaza, keeping them safe from that devil state, Israel.

Or Trump could appoint Mamdani. Free buses! Free food! Let's move the socialist experiment from NYC to Gaza. Come on, man. Don't you want to be mayor of Gaza? You can be the center of the universe. They need you. And you can lecture Israel and the west until the end of time. What a neat gig.
