"Do you hear the people sing/Lost in the valley of the night? It is the music of a people who are climbing to the light."

A military rendition of "Do you hear the people sing?"/"One Day More" (from "Les Misérables") as President Trump and the First Lady hosted a dinner for the Governors last night:
"Is there a world you long to see?... Say, do you hear the distant drums? It is the future that we bring/When tomorrow comes!"

I would expect Trump haters to connect that to "Tomorrow Belongs to Me," from "Cabaret." But of course, it is the song of the French revolutionaries of "Les Misérables."

Here's how "Do you hear the people sing?" looks at the end of the movie "Les Misérables":

Here's "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" for comparison:

The song "One Day More" has the line "Every man will be a king" which I thought was interesting considering that Trump recently called himself "King of New York" after he freed — or tried to free — the people of New York City from the "congestion" fees imposed by its Democratic overlords. But I don't think the line appears in the medley of the 2 songs as sung in the White House last night. Tell me if you hear them.

Here's "One Day More" in the movie:

I think I see the Governor of Nebraska. Anyone see the Governor of Maine.

I think you could counter-sing The Battle Hymn of the Republic with that song. They have very similar vibes.

Hey! I saw MY governor.
I wonder what the seating arrangements were. R-D-R-D, or were the tables segregated by political party?

The military choir is looking a little too choir and not enough military. They should join the new Sec Def in some PT.

People have labeled this the greatest Nazi song ever written by a Jew. But it could've been easily been a young German communist - and more accurate.

I've always loved the interweaving of all the main musical themes of the show in One Day More. Say what you will, it's pretty great composition.

Nice song from Les Mis. For some reason I always thought this was written by A.L Webber. And yes, that choir needs some PT. Where is Sargent Hartmann?

I always liked the stage version. Here is the 25th anniversary concert starting with Nick Jonas playing the part of Trump. Here is a reminder of the previous Administration.

Back when Trump was being prosecuted, I suggested here that he should do Jean Valjean’s “Who Am I?” aria, which ends with him answering his own question with his prisoner number.

Would have been great if the choir had done that one instead.

As an encore, Hochul could have got up and done the Javert-Valjean duet with Trump.

Also, speaking of Les Miz, the SNL 50th special did a version of One More Day as a history of NYC’s ups and downs since the 70s, which was relatively kind to Giuliani and relatively realistic about the current decline:

If we’re playing “I see my governor,” I saw mine. Glenn Youngkin stands 6’ 7” or thereabouts.

Some on the left are calling for a "French style revolution." This is Trump's way of telling them that its already here.

Lazarus म्हणाले...

"Every man will be a king" may remind some people of Huey Long's slogan "Every man a king."

Why weep or slumber America?
Land of brave and true
With castles, and clothing, and food for all
All belongs to you
Every man a king! Every man a king!
For you can be a millionaire
But there's something belonging to others
There's enough for all people to share
When it's sunny June and December too
Or in the wintertime or spring
There'll be peace without end!
Every neighbor a friend
With every man a king!

And that, in turn, may remind some of Jackie Kennedy's favorite "Camelot":

It's true! It's true! The crown has made it clear.
The climate must be perfect all the year.

A law was made a distant moon ago here:
July and August cannot be too hot.
And there's a legal limit to the snow here
In Camelot.
The winter is forbidden till December
And exits March the second on the dot.
By order, summer lingers through September
In Camelot.
Camelot! Camelot!

Lyrics written by a Choate and Harvard contemporary of JFK.

Which may remind some of "If I Ruled the World" from the musical "Pickwick" (though the title's been repurposed and reused by rappers since then). I'll spare you the lyrics.

Nancy म्हणाले...

What amazes me about Les Mis is that the English lyrics, which seem perfect, were retrofitted to the music which was written to fit the French lyrics.

Bruce Hayden म्हणाले...

The Dems’ polling has crashed since the election, down by over ten points, now down in the mid 30s. Maybe worse in our lifetimes. And part of it is this - that the Trumps know how to entertain, and do. The White House is set up to entertain. And the Trumps do it. A lot. The Bidens mostly didn’t, because SLO Joe was rarely up and partially coherent that time of day. And, of course, “Doctor” Jill never was good at it. Melania is.

No uniformed members of the US Marine Corps were singing. Them was doggies.
