In the sun's spotlight in the woods today: Lycoris squamigera.

IMG_7967

It didn't really look like it belonged there. Seemed more like something for some meticulous garden in the neighborhood. But the sun shone on it so brightly — at 2:30 in the afternoon — that I stopped and recorded the incongruous gaudiness.

"Lycoris squamigera... is a plant in the amaryllis family, Amaryllidaceae, subfamily Amaryllidoideae. .... The flowers spring dramatically from the ground in mid to late summer; it usually takes only four to five days from first emergence to full bloom. This suddenness is reflected in its common names: surprise lily, magic lily, and resurrection lily." Wikipedia

It's also one of several plants that gets called "naked ladies." I was going to call this post "At the Naked Ladies Café...." — and add "... you can talk about whatever you want” — but I thought that would be pandering. I'm still providing the information that you can call this plant "naked ladies," and, of course, as usual, you can talk about whatever you want.

Where's the sunrise picture today? I overslept! Slept until 6:00.

Iran's attitude toward recent Israeli strikes on Hamas and Hezbollah leaders.

"WTF! They don't seem to know how to fight an asymmetric war. They use soldiers; we use assassins. Are they going to go around assassinating like us? How does that work? Maybe we'll get out our soldiers. Then what? A war! What is wrong with them?"

Just finished watching The Matrix for the first time, via a Blu Ray DVD on a really large screen TV with a sound bar. Amazing. All I really knew about this movie before I watched it was the red pill/blue pill reference, and the names of the famous actors. Riveting is all I can say. I may be the last person on planet Earth who hadn't seen it. But I highly recommend it. A real adrenaline rush. Especially good on a Friday or Saturday night when you want some weekend high energy entertainment.

Repair of bicycle rear axle took longer than expected - spacers on new axle were the wrong length and on the old axle were both worn and frozen on. Some 3/8" junk washers were found and the derailleur made to work properly again. No job is complete without drawing blood. Total time 4 hours.

Discovery: Boraxo hand soap powder is no longer made. Grease gunk hand washing takes 3 times as long now with Lava soap bars.

I never liked any of the dystopian movies, except Veep TV series. The left sees it as making jokes about Palin which are about as unfunny as modern Trump jokes; but the right might notice that it actually mocks voters via trials and tribulations of experts in what voters will fall for.

Much as I would prefer to discuss naked ladies, I have a question that I recall was discussed relatively recently here, but I can't look up that discussion due to a catch-22. I left a comment here a couple of years back and wanted to retrieve it, but have no idea how to find it. Same thing for the discussion regarding searching through the old comments. Any suggestions?

@Rhhardin. Boraxo is now called TMT Boraxo. It is available on eBay, among other places. I used to sell it in my previous life.

I get the feeling there's a war on Borax. I came across this on the <a href='https://citizensustainable.com/borax-environment/">VitizenSustainable</a>
website:

"<I>Borax can have toxic effects.

Some people use the terms borax and boric acid interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.

Both borax and boric acid are derived from boron, but boric acid is usually more refined. The chemical formula for boric acid is H₃BO₃.

<B>For example, H3 stands for Tritium, a hydrogen isotope that is not present in borax.</b> </I>[????]<I>

It should be noted that the EPA deems boric acid to have moderate acute toxicity.

Research found that when animals like dogs, mice, and rats were exposed to borax and boric acid, they experienced a decrease in body weight <b>at high doses</b>, but the substances were not carcinogenic.</I>"

I'm sure that people more knowledgeable than me will identify several fallacies, but H₃ is three hydrogen atoms in the molecule, not an isotope of hydrogen.

What deleterious effects have boron derivatives had on the environment?

I can understand Boraxo being discontinued because there's more modern hand cleaners like Fast Orange that work just as well. But I pray they don't get rid of laundry borax. It's the best thing I've found for getting smells out of clothes when you're stuck using an HE washer.

20 + years ago the guy living in my house no longer could keep up with his traditional gardens so he spent his time planting surprise lillies where ever he felt like it. There were over 150 when I moved in. Construction and landscaping has greatly reduced the number but many remain.

When I look out my window it looks like small flocks of flamingoes dotting the property.

They make (Terro) ant baits, that are (LITERALLY) just sugarwater and borax.
step I
You snap off the cover, and them lay them down near an "ant path"..
the next day, there's Just as many ants as before you started.. What's the point?
the Next day, there's LOT'S More ants than before! This is a scam!! WHY DID I BUY IT??
The NEXT day, there's noticeably fewer ants.. hmmm
The NEXT day, there's almost NO ANTS.. maybe this does work?
The day after THAT.. There's NO ants!!!!

It turns out, that the ants
a) notice the delicious sugarwater, and load up with it, and go back to any central..WHERE..
b) they tell the other ants about the FREE FOOD! and share with their friends ('cause ants are nice)
c) LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of ants go and get more sugar water (and share 'cause ants are nice)
d) THEN.. borax KILLS THE LITTLE F*CKERS DEAD! Not just ant that came out, but ants that shared
e) did i mention that they shared with the queen ant (or whatever ant colonies have)

the Only problem with the baits is:
f) after a few months, the sugarwater dries up, and IF new ants move it.. GOTO STEP I

The cool thing is: borax is just (about) soap), so while you don't want to drink the sugarwater,
it's not full of DDT or dioxin or parathion or something evil, it's just (about) soap!

AND! the ant baits are cheap!

US astronauts Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams may finally get home after all. NASA is making “contingency plans” to use SpaceX to bring them back down to earth. I’m sufficiently cynical to believe that the Biden administration would hate like Hell to do anything that would let Elon Musk look good, but understands that having the astronauts die in space by trying to bring them back in Boeing’s glitch-prone piece of shit Starliner would be a huge public relations disaster.

This election is not about democracy being on trial; it is about the implosion of the Republican party as a national contending party. After November, it will badly be in need of reinvention. (Whispers of the coming rebuild will be continuous from Labor Day to election day.)

The democracy-on-trial meme was another of the giant political misfires of Biden's failed reelection effort. But there will be a next time because some future American strongman will study the Trump era carefully for the many valuable lessons to be learned and as a template for his own future path to illiberal power.

Trump seems to be erratically following many stars in the right-wing sky of delusions, a crooked path that may lead him to a vote total somewhere in the mid to high 30 percentage range, the low 40s at best. America is moving on. It is a turn-the-page election.

Harris must keep her distance from Biden's failing Middle East foreign policy until next January 20. She needs to keep in mind FDR's rule that the US has one president at a time, the principle that kept Roosevelt away from Hoover's failed economic policies until the day of his inauguration. One strongly suspects the American people will be looking for a new page in American foreign policy.

Rich recycles a confession into an accusation. The neocon led Republican Party, the one that sold out working Americans to billionaires like Bezos, can you open a small retail business on Main Street anymore, if so, why are all of the storefronts empty? It’s not like that in Europe, so it’s not the inevitable course of history. Never mind what they have done to well paying manufacturing jobs. How does Rich define a good paying job for a working class man? Economic inefficiency.

Rich’s proposed Republican Party could meet in a phone booth.

A snow of borox on the carpet and scuffing in kills fleas for several years. It is said that sharp edges puncture the shells of the fleas. On the other hand it's said to be toxic, though I've noticed no effects from the snow treatment, and it's still used in washing clothes.

The toxic thing may be overdone, considering how long it's been around.

“One strongly suspects the American people will be looking for a new page in American foreign policy.“

Most of us like the Trump foreign policy a lot - no new wars, precision targeting of king terrorists like Quemani (sp?), personal confrontation to quell threats as with Kim Jung Un, renegotiating treaties, influencing NATO members to pony up, etc. If only the Dems could be so bold and successful….maybe they’re the party that needs a rebuild on foreign policy front.

It all comes down to what your foreign policy goals are. When will we know what Harris’s are, anyway?

RoseAnne म्हणाले...

One other problem with Kamala's campaign I have not yet seen addressed.

As I understand it, the VP has the responsibility to trigger the use of the 25th if deemed needed. It is one of her current constitutional duties. I have no problem with what Obama reportedly did because they used the 25th as a threat but did not actually trigger it.

Why was Obama doing the negotiating instead of Harris herself?

He said he got her permission - and that may be true - but why is someone who wants to be President deferring an action she has a right to take to someone not in the chain of responsibility already laid out in the Constitution?

Was she incapable of getting the Cabinet members onboard? Did she try? Obama didn't need her permission to go to Joe and put pressure on him. His mention of Harris was simply borrowing authority he did not have. My complaint in this is NOT with Obama, but with Harris. If you want to be seen as presidential, BE PRESIDENTIAL.

Election Day is in approximately two months. Will Biden last that long cognitively? He will have 2 and a half months after that before inauguration day. If Harris gets her a** handed to her in the election will she care about taking care of her Constitutional assigned responsibilities then?

Can a woman who is still reading from briefing books be able to handle both jobs if action needs to be taken in the next two months? I was surprised when she ducked Netanyahu speech. Her job was to be there - all she had to do was be "business professional". She wasn't required to be there at convention but what a missed opportunity for her.

Like many woman I have waited a long time for the first woman President. We have had excellent female governors from both parties in that time period. Harris needs to " president up" and act like she wants the job.
