Said Dean Phillips, a Democratic Party candidate for President (who got 19.6% of the vote on the Democratic side of the New Hampshire primary).
I love this. This is what Democrats need to do, not spend the next 9 months expressing contempt for what might be half of their fellow citizens.
I seriously cannot believe CNN actually aired this!!! 👀🔥

Close. Diversity of individuals, minority of one.
Legitimately shocked that CNN would let that go on their airwaves. It completely undermines their entire narrative, in a sensible, polite way.
"This is what Democrats need to do, not spend the next 9 months expressing contempt for what might be half of their fellow citizens"
Why? Contempt works. Those fellow citizens are deplorable. Some of them even oppose unlimited abortion on demand. Dem strategy is to unite the anti-Trumpists by making Trump and his supporters uncouth. And abortion! Sorry, "reproductive health"!
Those people "might be" half of their fellow citizens. But the Dem bet is that, as in the recent past, they are slightly less than half. It's not an irrational bet.
They allowed that? Well, you will not find anything like that On PBS, NBC, CBS, or ABC.
Mind crime!
Hope he is still in the ballot on super Tuesday. But last night pretty grim.
This was a fluke (i.e., that CNN even broadcast this). Since both CNN and MSNBC have made it clear that they won't cover any speech by Trump for the duration of the campaign (because literally everything he says is "disinformation"), even sentiments like this will be censored. Even Orwell couldn't have foreseen that you don't need a Ministry of Truth to censor media: the mainstream media is eager to police its own ranks.
“If you don’t vote Biden, you ain’t lesbian!”
—- “Dementia” Joe Biden
the disdain is meant to keep their own base in line, and prevent them from falling in love
Enjoy. That "nice leftwing media outlet" will be in the rear-view mirror once it's offical that Trump and Biden are the nominees.
All will be back to loyal D-hack SOP soon... with non-stop Biden butt-sniffing/ lap-dog-media-praising - & non-stop Trump-bashing.
Phillips gave up a safe House seat for this because he was swindled by a bunch of consultants.
I'm sticking with the rallying the troops theory...
There is an uniter not a divider.
Dean Phillips is crazy commentary from CNN & MSNBC in 3...2...1...
Every single one of them: thoughtful, hospitable, friendly. All of them so frustrated that they feel nobody is listening to them, except Donald Trump. A diverse crowd
Imagine: "I visited an inner city high school. The kids were polite, friendly, and spoke good English. Surprisingly articulate. They just feel trapped in poverty."
Or: "I walked around the University of Wisconsin main quad. Not all the students had green or blue hair. Most didn't have nose rings. Some even identified with the gender they were assigned at birth. Many just wanted to get a good job after college."
Give us all a break. He is describing the sane majority of the United States. Acting surprised like he discovered something. Still and asshole Democrat.
Sounds like somebody wants to be the next Tulsi Gabbard!
“All of them so frustrated that they feel nobody is listening to them, except Donald Trump.”
That’s a frustrating sentence to parse. So Donald Trump is the only person at the Trump rally who feels people are listening to him? And why did he have to wait in line at his own rally?
This is what Democrats need to do, not spend the next 9 months expressing contempt for what might be half of their fellow citizens.
But they won't do it. The hatred is real. Democrats have convinced their sheep that Trump supporters are racist little Hitlers.
It's a nice with Ann, but it's not going to happen. They will double down on the divisiveness.
I'd imagine we are going to see a lot of fires this summer like we did in 2020.
This is what Democrats need to do, not spend the next 9 months expressing contempt for what might be half of their fellow citizens.
@Althouse, I agree with those upthread who suggest that CNN made a mistake airing this. But I think there’s a small mistake in what you wrote, too. I think that it’s not “might be half,” I think it’s way more than half. And as you can tell, the people are motivated.
Did he touch any of the Trump supporters?
Like Steve Garvey did the house-less people?
Twenty years ago almost every single position currently held by Trump was considered common sense on the left.
Moving manufacturing overseas? Just a way to avoid environmental and labor laws and also harms the working and middle class.
Illegal immigration? None other than Cesar Chavez opposed it, he saw it being used as a way to break strikes. Clinton publicly stated that we needed to secure the border.
Deregulation? https://www.cato.org/sites/cato.org/files/serials/files/regulation/2001/7/clinton.pdf
A political realignment is taking place. The Democrat party simply isn't the party of the working and middle classes any longer. They appear to be dominated by insular, provincial faux "intellectuals" who have adopted believes and values that are anathema to majority of the people of the United States. Only their control over the MSM enables them to dominate the culture, and that is breaking down.
I eat his gelato, but I won't vote for him. Even as he says nice things about his neighbors, which is somehow newsworthy in 2024 America.
Dean seems like a nice guy. But he is attached to the Democratic Party. I cannot do anything to support the party which has worked so hard to tear this country apart. Pretty simple, really. And I am sure I'm not alone in this. If Dean Phillips wants to get traction, he needs to leave the Democratic Party.
I have read that he will do that in the upcoming months.
Won't be long before Trump supporters at rallies are chased down and beaten as in the past.
Also doxxed, fired from jobs, ostracized. It is the Democrats way.
Not surprised that CNN put this out.
Their primary goal is to push/shove/drag LGB over the finish line, BAMN.
The target audience is not Americans, or voters. It is the people who vote in Democrat primaries, for whom any positive mention of Trump is a 3rd rail, the Kiss of Death.
Fragging one of their own is an acceptable sacrifice; any D voter on the cusp of voting for Phillips v. Biden in SC or the Super Tuesday states will no longer consider Phillips. He will be dead to all except the very small contingent of reality based yet still Democrat party supporters.
So, you are so upset that the Democrats are being mean to Trump and his voters. Yet, you seem to have no problem about the way Trump and his voters refer to Democrats (oh, I am sorry Marxist, communists, vermin, blood polluters) and Biden (Biden "crime family", harping on Hunter's laptop).
What ever happened to cruel neutrality?
I went to the Trump rally in at the Waukesha airport in 2020 when Milwaukee would let Trump use Mitchell Field. About 20K people in attendance. Some asshole lib paid for a billboard by the airport that said "Super Spreader Event Happening Here" [COVID]. Somehow the BLM mass gatherings weren't.
There was ZERO hassle getting in and out. Nobody messed with the secret service going through security. You could have heard a pic drop during the prayer. No hassle getting out. I'd imagine the unemployment rate among the Waukesha crowd was zero. Trump was late because he had to land Airforce 1 at Mitchell Field, and then motorcade to the Waukesha Airport. Nobody went home; everyone waited.
But of course there were idiot liberals outside yelling "racist" and "fascist" mindless bullshit and the attendees.
And who the hell is Dean Phillips anyway (quickly checks Wikipedia)?
Oh he's a three term congressman from Minnesota, and an "Elite" (alma mater is Brown)
Must have been AFTER the republicans ate the dem's babies.
Agree that Dems should do this but they won’t because they can’t. They simply cannot allow themselves to see that Boo Ridley was actually a nice guy.
Yeah, maybe going back to trying to fool them will help.
But what's this guy going to say about the border?
What's he going to say about the last election?
What's he going to say about Jan 6th?
About all the charges against Trump?
About the FBI?
About the censorship program Taibbi and Shellenberger exposed?
And on and on.
What's he going to say about Trump himself?
I hear you? I want to smooth your ruffled feathers, little birds?
Maybe none of those things matters. I guess he doesn't need to win the Trump voters over. He just needs the middle of the roaders and the Dems. The middle of the roaders don't care about any of the above. They just don't want to hear sirens in their neighborhoods while they're trying to sleep.
To paraphrase the excerpt from Dr. Strangelove: Gentlemen, you can’t cover speeches by Donald Trump. This is a newsroom.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAeqVGP-GPM
I live in Minnesota and have watched this guy’s shtick for a while. As he typically does, Phillips is essentially playing the old Proxmire/Moynihan game of acknowledging the concerns of his political opponents while simultaneously toeing the party line every time it matters. His family fortune comes from selling rotgut booze, so duplicity is a specialty of the house.
So, he's saying that knuckle-dragging Neanderthals can be nice?
What a concept.
Welcome to the real America of actual people who go to work every day and are tired of the government taking their stuff and pushing them around.
Trump NEEDS TO REALIZE, that he Just Isn't Popular!
Back in 2020, he received less votes; than ANY sitting President EVER had*
In yesterday, he received less votes in the NH, than ANYONE EVER had*
Ever had* Except for ALL the others.. He Actually set a new record.
That's RIGHT. He is THE MOST POPULAR CANDIDATE.. IN HISTORY
Trump has broken the record for the most votes ever received in a New Hampshire Presidential Primary, surpassing the record of 152,193 votes set by @BernieSanders in 2016..
At time of publication, 152,565 votes were cast for President Trump, with 13% of the votes still yet to be tallied.
I've heard him talk about Trump and Trump supporters before. I hope he's changing his opinion, but it sounds more like damage control.
AA: "This is what Democrats need to do, not spend the next 9 months expressing contempt for what might be half of their fellow citizens."
Yes, but "expressing contempt for what might be half of their fellow citizens" is what "educators" at all levels - Government funded day-care to Government funded post graduate - and the Media have been pushing these last three decades.
Mush brains look to Government to solve their every problem, arrogantly enlist the sovereign power* of Government to solve problems they "virtuously" project on other people.
*can legally, without effective recourse, take your property, your liberty, your very life.
The DNC at Biden's command canceled the NH primary and denied them delegates. Yet all the Dems in NH wrote in Biden's name yesterday. Why? If they wanted to stop Trump, vote Nikki. Biden slapped them, and they asked for more. Phillips is wasting his time on victims who won't identify their abuser.

You're comparison would have more weight if you and your friends hadn't spent much of the Trump administration beating on Trump voters with bike locks hidden in socks. Sorry if my words hurt your feelings, Freder.
It was a live interview. How could they have stopped it? Must have been painful for the interviewer.
In a longer version he goes on to criticize Biden by calling out the basement strategy.
"I gotta tell you guys, I went to a Donald Trump rally a couple of nights ago.'
For his next trick, he should try getting into a Biden event.

"Yet all the Dems in NH wrote in Biden's name yesterday. Why? If they wanted to stop Trump, vote Nikki."
Sorry but you are wrong. Tens of thousands of the Democrats did exactly what you recommend. Look at the vote totals.
You're comparison would have more weight if you and your friends hadn't spent much of the Trump administration beating on Trump voters with bike locks hidden in socks.
Of course this statement is typical of Trump fans, defaming someone with accusations of battery with absolutely no facts to back up your accusations. And yes I realize that this was a poor attempt at a metaphor, but remember that Althouse defended Trump for "blood poisoning" comment by saying what he was referring to fentanyl, not cross breeding.

So everyone who does not support Trump is a "mush brain"? Althouse should scold you for calling over half the voters in this country "mush brains" (and remember Trump did not win the popular vote in either election).
Guarantee you she will not scold you, so no need to worry.
Thank you for demonstrating my point.
interesting the things you see here.
Freder and Left Bank regard Phillips as some sort of Quisling for daring to say something other than sneering, nasty things about some Trump rally attendees. Doesn't matter that he's merely reporting what he experienced; for our Leftist friends it's not truth or reality that matters, it's the narrative.
There was ZERO hassle getting in and out. Nobody messed with the secret service going through security. You could have heard a pic drop during the prayer. No hassle getting out. I'd imagine the unemployment rate among the Waukesha crowd was zero.
What exactly is your point with this little anecdote?
Guards... Seize him!
Stroke me, stroke me
"Every single one of them: thoughtful, hospitable, friendly. All of them so frustrated that they feel nobody is listening to them, except Donald Trump. A diverse crowd, people that have never been to a Trump event before. My party is completely delusional right now!"
This is all true. The problem is, Trump listens to them only to parrot it back at them and win their trust, as grifters are expert in doing. They're just marks to Trump. He was a mediocre president and they believe he made America a paradise.
The truth is currently no viably electable person (and neither major party) has a sincere and substantial vision or plan how to address the problems in this country...all stemming directly from the disparity between the wealthy (and thus powerful) minority entities and the non-wealthy (and thus non-powerful) majority people at large.
So everyone who does not support Trump is a "mush brain"?
@Freder, yup. That, or they’re in on the graft and corruption. Or both.
Althouse should scold you for calling over half the voters in this country "mush brains"
No! Not that! Anything but that!
And it’s not “over half.” It’s way less than half.

Yeah. Really grim. Won by double digits in a race in which Democrats - who have no intention of supporting anyone in the general election but the current drooling joke of a president - flocked to the polls to vote for Haley, in a lame attempt to derail Trump.
Phillips defeated Republican Eric Paulson in 2018 and won reelection in 2022. Dean could have had a promising career with a safe seat in Congress and as a future candidate for president in 2028. Instead — he listened to bad advice that appealed to his ego/vanity.
"The problem is, Trump listens to them only to parrot it back at them and win their trust, as grifters are expert in doing."
What, exactly, is Trump getting out of this "grift?" Other than 91 indictments. And attempts to strip away his assets and put him in jail.

This is funny because down below you were praising yourself for being reasonable and inciteful.

Water leak in a bathroom somewhere...

In neither presidential election did Trump get a majority of the votes cast (no matter how much you repeat the lie). Trump even formed a commission to "expose" the widespread voter fraud in the 2016 election that resulted in him losing the popular vote. Oh yeah, they found nothing.
Freder and Left Bank regard Phillips as some sort of Quisling for daring to say something other than sneering, nasty things about some Trump rally attendees.
Not true, I just consider Phillips to be a nonentity.
Cook,
Good comment. The only minority protected in this country is the wealthy. At all costs.
This is a Sista Soulja attempt.
Also food for thought, anyone look at an actuarial table?
https://www.ssa.gov/oact/STATS/table4c6.html
We act like Trump v. Biden is an inevitability, but there is around a 12% chance that either Joe or Donald does not survive until the election. That's a lot of eggs in some decrepit old baskets. Both parties should do some contingency planning. If I am Phillips or Haley, I'm sticking in the race for this reason alone. These aren't super humans. They both appear to be in terrible physical shape.
"Twenty years ago almost every single position currently held by Trump was considered common sense on the left."
Interesting. Are we saying Trump has been the RINO all along? I agree. Look at his instinct to dole out freebies during COVID. Freebies that few needed but my children will have to pay for. The Trump GOP is pathetic.
What, exactly, is Trump getting out of this "grift?"
Well, lots of attention, which is what he craves. But if you are talking about monetary gain, he made tons of money from his hotels and golf courses including charging the U.S. government for stays at his properties. Oh yeah, and then his son-in-law got 2 billion dollars from the Saudis after Trump left office.

What I've been saying for the last year. It's not going to be Trump-v Biden. And possibly not either.
Of course this statement is typical of Trump fans, defaming someone with accusations of battery with absolutely no facts to back up your accusations.
Typical Freder. There are countless examples of your fellow thugs beating the shit out of Trump supporters, but since it didn't happen in your own, little world ... it simply doesn't exist.
Look up Kyle Rittenhouse for starters. Or Andy Ngo. And then ignore it. Like you always do.
Robert Cook said, " He was a mediocre president and they believe he made America a paradise. "
No one has ever argued that Trump made America paradise.
Doing nothing to accelerate America's decline, however, is a high -- and much appreciated -- standard.
People don't remember that in 52 and 68 the incumbent Democratic president was not on the NH ballot, but both were expecting to perform like Biden did last night. When they did not, against Kefauver and Clean Gene, respectively, they declared they were not running, and the field opened up. I had been hoping (dreaming?) for something similar in 24, and it didn't happen. Dem candidates kept dropping out between SC and CA in 20, so it was slim pickings by CA (when I didn't vote Biden anyway). This year it's already slim pickings, and we haven't even reached the first official primary.
Perhaps the people whom Phillips spoke to believed that the 2020 election was "stolen," that the convicted January 6 capitol rioters are "hostages," and that a President like Trump should be immune from criminal prosecution for ordering a SEAL team to execute a political opponent, just so long as the President had previously escaped impeachment.
Why do such people expect that intelligent informed citizens will speak to them with any seriousness?
In a sane world, Dean Philips would be running against Ron DeSantis for president.
"What, exactly, is Trump getting out of this "grift?" Other than 91 indictments. And attempts to strip away his assets and put him in jail."
More progressive projection. They use their political positions to enrich themselves, so they imagine everybody else does, too.
But if you are talking about monetary gain, he made tons of money from his hotels and golf courses including charging the U.S. government for stays at his properties.
It takes quite the ignoramus to think Trump made money during his time as President. For one, he donated his salary. And two, his properties/golf courses were boycotted, sponsorships lost and anything remotely related to Trump real estate was tainted by your leftwing attacks.
But again, since it doesn't exist in your bubble? It simply didn't happen.
Your bullshit got old 20 years ago at John Hawkins' blog. The smell hasn't gotten any better since.
In neither presidential election did Trump get a majority of the votes ...
Your point is conceded for 2016. No sane person believes the vote totals for 2020; but it's possible that you are correct for that election, as well.
However! That was then. This is now. Democrats have pretty much completed the process of driving the working class and middle class out of their party and into Trump's arms. (Trump's arms -- the GOP has a lot of work ahead to change them into Republican voters, though I note that Democrats are doing all in their power to assist the process. That might be enough right for a majority right there.
Democrats have also made sure that Jews understand that they aren't welcome in the their party either. I don't see them voting for Trump this year, but I don't see them voting for Democrats, either. The Hispanics have mostly left already. Every poll of Hispanic voters I saw between 2015 and the present emphasizes that Hispanics hate open borders. Joe Biden is trying to say -- now! -- that the border is broken but it's not his fault. No one believes that outside of his own family.
So we shall see what happens.
"No sane person believes the vote totals for 2020"
Lol. Its been 4 years and there would have been 1000s of co-conspirators and yet no one can name names of the boogyman behind it. You sweet child. 😘
It was Colonel Mustard in the library with the ballot dumps
Get a CLUE losers.
"No sane person believes the vote totals for 2020"
Asserted by one of the benighted true believers who continue to insist with spittle-flecked intensity that the 2020 election was stolen, despite a continuing absence of any factual proof.
"It takes quite the ignoramus to think Trump made money during his time as President. For one, he donated his salary. And two, his properties/golf courses were boycotted, sponsorships lost and anything remotely related to Trump real estate was tainted by your leftwing attacks."
Hmmm....
You don't say?
How about that?
Well, the Secret Service agents were expensive.
And yet Cooke he was a billion dollars poorer when he left office.
