If Ron DeSantis asked me "How do you spell Lambeau?," I'd say "L-A-M-B-E-R-T."

But that's just my sense of political humor, and I have a long memory, and it certainly goes back to 2004, when John Kerry campaigned in Wisconsin and called Lambeau "Lambert."

Anyway, here's the context for Ron's question "How do you spell Lambeau?," from the NYT article "Tom Brady and Ron DeSantis Are Said to Be on Texting Terms/The Republican nominee for Wisconsin governor, Tim Michels, told supporters recently that while DeSantis was watching a Packers game at Lambeau Field, he was texting the Buccaneers quarterback"

“I took Governor DeSantis to the Packer game at Lambeau Field,” Mr. Michels told a gathering of the Lake Country Patriots, a far-right group, on Thursday at a brewery in Oconomowoc, Wis.

Mr. DeSantis, who on the day of the Packers game had appeared at a rally for Mr. Michels and Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, “had never been to Lambeau Field before and he wanted to go,” Mr. Michels said. “We’re sitting there, you know, we’re watching the game and all of a sudden, I look over and he’s texting and he says, ‘How do you spell Lambeau?’

“I say, ‘Who are you texting with?’ He says, ‘I’m texting with Tom Brady.’ The governor of Florida gets to text with Tom Brady.... I’m hoping that when I’m governor of Wisconsin, I can text Aaron Rodgers,” the longtime Packers quarterback.

I got to that NYT article via this Intelligencer article "Tom Brady Texting Ron DeSantis Is Trump’s Nightmare Come True." Yes, the main story for most people is that Brady is friends with Trump, so it might mean something big if he's texting with DeSantis. Brady plays for a Florida team and DeSantis is the Florida governor, but, whatever, anything that can be about Trump will be about Trump in the MSM.

Personally, I was intrigued — and this was before I saw any Wisconsin connection — because the first sentence is oddly structured and I just liked it... and not just because of the strawberries:

While some of us mainly know Tom Brady as a frequent Super Bowl villain with a strange strawberry phobia who may be on the verge of divorcing Gisele Bündchen, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback is so cool to some folks that merely having someone text him in their presence is worth bragging about.

I'm guessing — from my privileged position here in Wisconsin — that Tim Michels brought it up not because Tom Brady "is so cool" but because it situated him at a Packers game and set up a line about Aaron Rodgers.

That's what I got from it--it set up a great humble-brag.

But that's the New York Times for you, which felt the need to describe the PAC as far right despite that being probably not true and definitely not relevant. You don't read The Times for thoughtful analysis, you read The Times to find out what the libs are thinking about.

We'll also soon know whether this is going to go as badly for the Democrats as it appears it will. Unfortunately this may result in less peace in our host's community, as when things went GOP the last time. Who knows how they'll try to win hearts and minds next.

I bet this is a group of people who support the Constitution.

Anyone who disagrees with the Lib/NYT narrative is (according to the NYT) extreme and a threat to our democracy.

Fuck'em. We're pushing back. No more Mr. Nice Guy.

Jake म्हणाले...

I agree with your assessment as to Michels's motivation.

I do wonder thought, how does the NYT define "far right group"? What criteria do they use? Is there a criteria other than just the fact its members weren't spitting invective at the republican in attendance?

SJW's and Liberals hate Tom Brady. I think he reminds them of the High school QB who dated the head cheerleader. Or the tall good looking guy who dated girls they could never get. Especially since they spent all their time talking about TV shows or what happenned in English class.

It's bad enough to hear about the politics of politicians, but worse to hear micro-analysis of the political preferences and affiliations of athletes.

If you believe anything you read in a magazine like Vanity Fair, you are easily duped. It is likely just hearsay or bullshit created out of emanations.

Aaron Rodgers wasn't a late bloomer. He set records at Cal and was the number 1 draft pick of the Packers...24th overall. He didn't play much in his first three years, but that's because the Packers had a HOF QB in Brett Favre.

gadfly म्हणाले...

Rodgers was the Packer's 1st Round Draft Pick #24 in 2005 but he was expected to be taken 1st or 2nd in the draft. The 49ers were rebuilding and chose Utah's Alex Smith instead of Rodgers. Aaron came off as prickly and egotistical in meeting with the 49ers, as reflected by his comment about being humiliated while waiting four hours to be picked. Rodgers's response to being passed over:

"Not as disappointed as the 49ers will be that they didn't draft me,"

Aaron Rodgers waited three years to become the starter at Green Bay because Brett Favre was leading a successful Packer team. Rodgers told them to "Play me or trade me" so Favre finally went bye-bye.

Nobody in their right mind from the donkey party votes for Newsom as a presidential candidate because his ex-wife is none other than Kimberly Guilfoyle, who was fired by Fox for sexual conduct and is supposedly now engaged to Don Trump Jr.

As for Donald Trump's appointment to SCOTUS, his hundreds of court cases will prevent this.

"...we’re watching the game..."

Reminds me of the Peyton Manning commercial right after he retired where he calls up Eli to ask him over to watch the game only to be reminded that Eli's working that day. Seems to me that there was a high probability that Tom Brady was likewise occupied that day.

Also, if you're actually at Lambeau Field, and have ignored all the identifying signs elsewhere, all you have to do is look at the scoreboard.

All in all, it's a cute story that served Michel's purpose, but I doubt it happened.

Jake: "I do wonder thought, how does the NYT define "far right group"? What criteria do they use?"

"far right group" = any group not actively on the left working with lunatic child body mutilators and groomers.

So, for instance, Inga and gadfly together constitute a "group" that is not "far right" as both Inga and gadfly are 100% on board the far left agenda that has led the New Soviet Democraticals over the "thelma and louise" political cliff.

There was massive voter fraud, and Trump would have won if there wasn't. And by "Antivaxxer" you mean the COVID jabs, that is hardly a "far right" position. I mean, how many blacks, hispanics, and Native Americans are far right. There is certainly nothing weird about refusing them. And Putin supporting?

If Desantis challenges Trump he is choosing to end his national ambitions.

Desantis is getting record amounts of campaign cash from billionaires and corporations.

If he thinks that is how you win the republican nomination post 2016 he deserves to be humbled.

I would prefer Kari Lake anyways. Desantis is pretty obviously a career politician swamp creature at this point.

DeSantis has pulled well in over $200M and 94% of it is from all the millionaires/billionaires/wall streeters who opposed Trump's economic policies, immigration policies and China engagement strategy.

So, a question for everyone that says they want Trump's policies in a more palatable (to them) package:

Why are the opponents of Trump's policies so gung ho for DeSantis?
