Trump would have blocked the Slavic Spring, mitigated the Kiev progression, audited the Wuhan-style labs, thus denying the several grounds to justify Russian invitation to intervention on Ukrainians' behalf.

Think best we could hope for is Trump and Desantis joining together with Trump pledging to step aside after two years and Denentis pledging to pick Scott as his VP. Probably too much to expect Trump to agree, unless he is convinced Desantis will beat him in R primary.
Let's all continue to pretend Biden actually won the 2020 election, and Trump lost. Our country will continue to slide downhill as long as half of the population is afraid to face the truth, or are just comfortable with the absentee voter fraud.
@meade. Putin would have left Ukraine alone. Trump would have continued making Europe buck up for NATO, and would have resisted its expansion eastward. That’s the poke that woke the bear. There is no reason for the US to still be paying for, or involved in a post WWII Cold War alliance. Trump would have also eventually exposed the money laundering and enrichment of US political families like the Bidens, Pelosis, and Romneys. Well it’s actually been exposed, but populations like Madison, WI are ok with it.
He was absolutely right on his perfect call with that idiot Zelinsky. And they impeached him for it to cover their own crimes, which continue today. Only difference now is Ukrainians and Russians are dying for US and Western European corruption, arrogance, and foolishness. Now we get to use middle class tax $$ to supply US weaponry to Ukraine. And when Putin gets his eastern provinces, we will spend a trillion US tax dollars to rebuild western Ukraine and enrich the contractors who are drooling...$$$$$ cha-ching!
The figures with the big gray sections are worth watching. Everyone has an opinion about Trump, but DeSantis could easily pull ahead if he campaigns, as he is less prone to unforced errors than Trump. Tim Scott is worth watching too.
A DeSantis/Scott ticket for '24 might be the Ds nightmare.
Has there ever been someone like Trump before in American politics? Assuming the Republicans win big in November and especially if a number of Trump endorsed candidates win absent some health crises, criminal indictment or national calamity Trump will be running in 2024. Question is can the Democrats once again steal the election?
But it's Trump's unfavorable and highly unfavorable numbers that should disqualify him from getting primary votes. Hey, it's great that you love him, think he got a raw deal in 2020, think the J6 hearing is a kangaroo court, whatever, but you need non-Rs and non-Trump lovers to vote for the R presidential candidate in 2024.

I am pretty certain that Putin would not have invaded Ukraine if Trump were in office. Biden is a once in a lifetime chance for Russia and China to settle scores with the West. They won't be able to resist it. Our Woke military will deter nobody and will lose a war if Biden gets us into one. I would say a 50/50 chance of war in the next two years. Maybe it would be better for us. A sort of "The Mouse That Roared" scenario.
As I read these charts, some small percentage of the poll respondents claim they have never heard of Joe Biden or Donald Trump. I wonder if that is indicative of a reluctance by a larger number of respondents to answer falsely about various questions.
I still say the D nominee will be either a Governor like Polis marketed as a moderate or a businessman like Mark Cuban. After the 2022 shellacking the D’s will purge the progressive left, in spirit preferably for them but in fact if necessary. If necessary they will give up 2024 to keep the party alive and come back in 2026/2028 as centrists. Much like after the McCarthy rout in 1972. Carter was a moderate southerner, as was Clinton. At least that’s how they ran.
I read this chart differently. Trump’s unfavorability rating (50%) is topped only by Biden, Clinton, Pelosi and Putin, none of seem likely to be the Democratic candidate in 2024. That unfavorability rating means that Trump cannot hope to get a majority of the popular vote. DeSantis, who is still unknown to most of the electorate, has a lot more potential. Nominating Trump would be like drawing to an inside straight. It’s a play, but there are much better ones available.
The abandonment of / retreat from Afghanistan seems to have dropped out of calculations. I gather that Trump ordered the experts to give him a workable plan, and they stalled. Or refused. Biden ordered the experts to retreat WITHOUT a plan, and here we are.
I mention this because I hope -- with little reason or confidence -- that somebody has a workable plan for abandonment of / disentanglement from Ukraine. I think between now and November that issue will become a big factor in the political calculation.
I see that Tulsi Gabbard, who as a presidential candidate earned more delegates to the Democratic nomination convention than Kamala Harris, was not polled. Neither was Sarah Palin, who is back on the November ballot. (If only in Alaska...) It would amuse me enormously if Palin wins a representative's seat and throws a hat into the ring for the Speaker's seat.
Ron DeSantis (all together now: " Who?!" ) has a lot of space to move in any direction. I'm thinking he's the Scott Walker of the line up.
This week, the videos are breaking of Kamala Harris impressionists. Most of the performers are copying earlier (better?) impressionists -- sort of like 2nd tier comedians doing Rich Little doing Dick Nixon. But the quirks and mannerisms that annoy so many of us are now amplified. Only a matter of time before late night TV brings such a performance forward.
Meade said... "Do you believe Putin would have invaded Ukraine if Trump had been re-elected?"
Hypotheticals besides, we can talk about things that did happen during Trump's term.
Ukranian civil war started with Maidan uprising in 2014 during Obama's term. Most of the bloody fighting in Donbass between Kievan army and Resistance militias took place before Trump. During Trump's term it was kept in a slow burn mode, although not completely extinguished.
Kievan agents were instrumental in at least two of the attempts by US Democrats to damage Trump presidency and remove him from office.
Ukranian civil war flared with new force about a year after Trump left the White House.
Amazing that Pelosi’s hard unfavorables are only 21 points less than Putin’s, considering the fawning press for incoherent Nan versus the unwavering demonization of the Vladster. It must really suck to be her…. lol
"Trump would have ..." and let's not forget about the U.S.-Mexico border, or the firehouse-style government spending binge and resulting inflation. A rational and honest assessment of Trump's presidency has to come out positive.
BUT the crazed, shrieking "I hate Trump!" voices are not rational, they are pure, flame-hot emotion: "I don't like that man!! You will never quiet these voices with sweet reason, as the craziness and shrieking is not about or open to reason.
So, while I'd have to agree that Trump is not at all likeable. I just don't see what that has to do with an honest and rational assessment of his performance as president. I just recognize that perhaps 40% of the electorate is not open to a rational and honest assessment because their gut reaction to Trump will over-rule and overwhelm any and all appeal to reason.
Wow. With all the media and high tech aligned against Trump and in love with Joe, Hillary Nancy and Kamala, he still has them beat. No wonder they want to keep him from running again.
Do you believe Putin would have invaded Ukraine if Trump had been re-elected?
Probably. I think Putin's designs on Ukraine had an inertia to them that only gained momentum after his early successes in 2014. But the fact that he attacked during the Obama years, didn't attack during the Trump years, and then attacked again in the Biden years is an excellent talking point.
No war in Ukraine if Trump is President. Democrats/Washington establishment want war in Ukraine to make money off of and to try and use to maintain power. Absolutely disgusting.
Kansas City said... or (2) have a new figure enter politics and capture the middle.
They HAVE her.. Tulsi Gabbard! IF the democrats Weren't Idiots.. Tulsi would be President today (she would have won 2020 in a LANDSLIDE) AND the democrats would be able to do NEARLY Everything they're able to push through with biden AND! gilbar would be pretty darn near Okay with it.. 'cause Tulsi is Cute
IF they Suddenly become intelligent, and run her in 2024.. She'll Win in a LANDSLIDE She is The Hope of (and for) the democrat party.. And they won't use her; because they're Stupid
The key takeaway is that despite being one of the most unpopular, senile and incompetent POTUS EVER, 82 y/o Joe biden could run again in 2024 and get at LEAST 44-47% (assuming 1/2 to 1/3 of "dont knows" vote for him).
Yeah, we wouldn't want that awful Trump back when we had exploding gas prices, raging inflation, war in the Ukraine, massive crime, tanking stock market, and non-stop jabber about "Drag queen hour". Oh wait, that's Joe "I've fallen and I can't get up" Biden. TRump just gave us mean tweets.
This country is almost to the tipping point. Like Calf or NY, you'll soon have so many "Yellow dog Democrats" it won't matter what the USA Government does. You'll have 50.1% voting democrat and as long as the Government allows you food, car, and a TV, the D's will stay in power NO MATTER WHAT.
In 2022 Calf, they should just stop wasting time with elections and have a Democrat party Politburo choose the office holders. Because that's all that happens anyway. A Coming attraction for the rest of the USA. Coming to a neighborhood near you!
"What would you say are the most important issues facing the country today?"
I think Cybersecurity at 4% is way too low. China is concentrating a lot of effort on it and people are going to feel blindsided when we take a big hit.
Wilbur said... As I read these charts, some small percentage of the poll respondents claim they have never heard of Joe Biden or Donald Trump. I wonder if that is indicative of a reluctance by a larger number of respondents to answer falsely about various questions.
Sheesh. I meant indicative of a reluctance to answer truthfully about various questions.
"Do you believe Putin would have invaded Ukraine if Trump had been re-elected?"
From Wikipedia:
"On December 21, 2019, US President Donald Trump signed a law that imposed sanctions on any firm that aids in the building of the [Nord Stream 2] pipeline. The pipeline's construction was halted minutes before Trump signed the law.[206][207]
The pipeline's construction was resumed in December 2020 after it appeared that Former Vice President Joe Biden (D) would be inaugurated as US president in the following January.[208]"
@Caligula and let's not forget about the U.S.-Mexico border, or the firehouse-style government spending binge and resulting inflation.
Do you not remember all the stimulus that Pelosi and Schumer passed, and Trump signed? Pelosi finally stopped writing new checks just before the election because she didn't want Trump taking credit, but Trump was demanding more stimulus.
It takes more than one disaster for a party to "purge" itself, and the "moderates" aren't necessarily going to come out looking much better than the left.
How long did it take the Democrats to come back after Carter? Or Labour to come up with Tony Blair? Even after Blair and Brown, they've been having trouble getting back to the center again. The Democrats' prior commitments will make it hard for them to nominate a moderate or an old straight white guy.
@Meade I don't think Putin would have invaded Ukraine with Trump in office. Too much uncertainty and the definite possibility that Trump would have reacted aggressively. Low level warfare would have continued in eastern Ukraine, but from the performance of the Russians so far Putin might have been concerned about getting his ass kicked. More importantly Trump would have listened to Putin and looked for a way toward peaceful negotiation.
Probably. I think Putin's designs on Ukraine had an inertia to them that only gained momentum after his early successes in 2014. But the fact that he attacked during the Obama years, didn't attack during the Trump years, and then attacked again in the Biden years is an excellent talking point.
I think if Trump were in his second term there would be a plebiscite in eastern Ukraine and the matter could have been peacefully settled. Trump was about making deals, not war. I don't know why Biden is so fixed on starting a war. Maybe it's senility or maybe its the Military-Industrial complex.
Carol said... We got a pretty good start on that under Trump IIRC.
I agree. He never saw a trillion dollar spending bill he didn't like (or sign). In my opinion if he had been re-elected and continued the spending I think we would be in the same inflation boat we're in right now.
Someone upthread mentioned Scott as VP. when will R's ever learn that D's don't change their vote because of a black on the R ticket. In any case, people don't vote for the VP, that's been proven again and again. And finally, go look at the last senate race and see how many blacks voted R even though Scott is black.
Here's my pick for 2024 VP - Ann Coulter.
But really what does it matter? Counting on Boobus Americanus to vote for a R in 2024 is a thin reed. And even if the R's win in November, what will that accomplish? We'll get Mitch back in control and Ken doll Kevin. Yeah, two fireballs who'll REALLY change things. LOL.
If you're one of the top 5 percent, don't worry. Your kind always does OK - until it doesn't. If you're one of the bottom 95 percent, look out. the future isn't going to be nice. Personally, me and my wife are looking for an overseas home. The USA was nice while it lasted, but dumb rubes never stop being dumb rubes. No matter how much Democracy you give them. They can't see past their nose. long term thinkers they ain't. Sad when you think of the USA in say 1946, and think of it now. But as Alec Baldwin said in Glen Gary Glenn Ross: "A loser is a loser".
Why does everyone assume Biden won't run again or that the party will not let him run again? How is the party going to stop their sitting president from running for a second term? Biden may do an LBJ but that isn't a given. So unless he does, or dies the only conclusion is that he intends to run again. Therefore unless Trump decides not to run or loses in the primaries it will be a race between Biden and Trump and the way things are going in the match Trump is the more likely winner.
Biden had the 17 Nobel Prize winning economists telling him that massive spending increases wouldn't cause inflation -- and maybe were even necessary to prevent inflation. Trump's advisors wouldn't tell him that, and probably weren't telling him that.
It's difficult to say what Trump would have done, but he just might have listed to his economists, and we could have been better off with Trump than we are now. Certainly, gas prices wouldn't be as high as they are, and Trump might have taken more decisive steps in dealing with supply chain problems.
"Has there ever been someone like Trump before in American politics?"
I would probably go back to Andy Jackson, the founder of the Democrats. Except for the Indian stuff. Trump was not after minorities, but was for border control. He would have been anti Canadian if they were trying to sneak in against the law.
Andy Jackson did more than most to take power from the New York, Boston, DC, and Philadelphia quadrangle and pass something to the rest of the people. He re-organized banking at the expense of the elites. He was severely hated by all right thinking people. He was thought gauche. He was more physical and military than Trump, but was not a business magnate.
Lance said... Has there ever been someone like Trump before in American politics?
Not in this century. Maybe Jackson who fought a duel over a bigamy charge. Kind of equivalent to "grab them by the pussy." Of course he said they would let him do so. That always gets forgotten.
The pertinent point is that when he runs again, Trump can state, most emphatically, that gas would be $2 and Russia would not have invaded Ukraine if he had been re-elected. Any Ds who want to argue the opposite are now playing on their own territory- gas was $2 and Russia did not invade when Trump was president, and now we're talking about all the bad stuff that happened during the Biden regime. He can also talk about men invading women's sports, baby formula being plentiful, Arab-Israeli peace, and that the vaccine was really developed under his governance. It all has the advantage of being true, and the comparisons are not favorable to whichever unfortunate Democrat wins the nomination in 2024.
I don't know why Biden is so fixed on starting a war. Maybe it's senility or maybe its the Military-Industrial complex. -------
The admin was trying to regain credibility lost by the Afghanistan debacle. It wasn't about starting a war, but about Publicly humiliation of putin so that iden and the US looked tough.
We have always known that most Americans don't pay a lot of attention to elections until, oh, say, the week after Labor Day in an election year (I mean a year divisable by 4; divisible by 2 would be later). So these poll results are fun to talk about, but they don't mean much.
I've said here before that I support DeSantis over Trump for the GOP 2024 nomination. The hard question is what Ron would have to offer Trump to make peace (surely Trump could run as a 3d party spoiler if he thought DeSantis dissed him). What could Pres. DeSantis offer Trump? Sec. State? Or any other Cabinet office? I don't see it. I think that the quiet deal has to be that Pres. DeSantis and a Republican-controlled House and Senate will do to the Democrat leadership what they tried to do to Trump, and I could live with that.
But if I'm reading it right, Ron Desantis is the only one whose very unfavorable rating wasn't higher than his very favorable rating. Pretty sure THAT scares everyone, including Trump.

Gusty, get a life. First of all, your hero thinks that you are a cheater and second. he personally voted by absentee ballot every time he bothered to vote as President. In the 2020 primaries, he voted in Florida by mail but declared to his nose-ring followers that mail voters are cheaters!
"No, mail ballots, they cheat," said Trump in 2020. "OK, people cheat. Mail ballots are a very dangerous thing for this country because they are cheaters."
In 2018 he voted using a New York absentee ballot.
NOT according to Progressive Joe Scarbourough who used to be a RINO, but changed to a Progressive when he married into the VERY Progressive left Bzezinski clan. They think Kamala is the be all, end all.
MEDIA BIAS ALERT: Kamala Harris hasn’t had a positive profile in a year. DeSantis sneezes and he’s framed as the rising star of politics. And yet the Great White Hope STILL loses is every head-to-head matchup with Harris. The VP also draws even with Trump. https://t.co/w6Z8kVHuw4
I think that the quiet deal has to be that Pres. DeSantis and a Republican-controlled House and Senate will do to the Democrat leadership what they tried to do to Trump, --------
That will never happen, and if Trump or DeSantis believed such an agreement then they'd be fools. The GOP establishment wants nothing more than to declare trumpism dead and go back to the way things were before 2016, when they had a nice comfortable gift. If DeSantis were the nominee he would be stabbed in the back, and if Trump drops out before a replacement was chosen, then DeSantis would never get the nod. His donors would dry up, and his campaign would be sabotaged.
Drago said... DeSantis still must prove he can deliver the blue-collar midwest and populist voters the way Trump did.

We all know what you leftists pulled in 2020 and we know you will try to conjure up conditions in 2024 to again enact mass changing of voting laws at the last minute to get the democraticals over the line. The SC will have something to say about that in the next session.
Trump was clearly an accelerator for building a new republican party focused on the American working class. You dont understand that because you democraticals dont "understand" anything that isn't forcefed you by Maddow or Zuckerberg.
Btw, it was impossible to not notice how you #BlueAnon conspiracy lunatics, with the exception of jim5301, avoided the Hutchison thread yesterday like the plague as Hutchison's moronic lies were exposed in close to real time last week and she will become the next liar added to the "The Walls Are Closing In"-bonfire of democratical liars like yourself.
Not to worry though. I am certain your beloved hero Adam Schiff is already working diligently on the next Soviet Sham-peachment Show!
I am no youngster, but in my entire life I cannot recall any Democrat President having a favorability rating of less than 35%. It's baked in.
If DiSantis runs without Trump's blessing he will lose either the primary or the general, because Trump's core is even more solid than that 35% Dem core. And they are not party sheep. They will not vote for DiSantis, or anyone else, if Trump isn't OK with it.
Gadfly The Hopeless: ""No, mail ballots, they cheat," said Trump in 2020. "OK, people cheat. Mail ballots are a very dangerous thing for this country because they are cheaters."

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!
As with all the Althouse Usual Lefty Suspects, our Hopeless Gadfly once again wants to conflate limited and tightly controlled absentee balloting (well established procedures, active solicitation of absenntee ballot, providing proof of identity and location, signature verification etc) with No Verification unsolicited mass mailing of ballots with no clean up of voter rolls.
At this point I don't think our "Poor Man's LLR C****" Gadfly is faking it. He/she/xe might just be that dumb and not simply doing the standard lefty ploy of reintroducing previously debunked lefty lies.
The Godfather: "I think that the quiet deal has to be that Pres. DeSantis and a Republican-controlled House and Senate will do to the Democrat leadership what they tried to do to Trump, and I could live with that."
There is not even an imaginary world where that could take place. Ever.
Russell: "But if I'm reading it right, Ron Desantis is the only one whose very unfavorable rating wasn't higher than his very favorable rating. Pretty sure THAT scares everyone, including Trump."
DeSantis is not well known nationally, so, no. Trump is not scared of DeSantis or any other republican.
Any minimally competent pollster knows a discussion of DeSantis national favorable/unfavorables means little at this point in time.
Naturally I will be quite pleased if DeSantis continues his America First, conservative, aggressively pro-populist policies and, well, MAGA-ish political pushback on the idiotic lefties and their Hopeless minions like gadfly.
How soon we forget the Trump effect in polls, I.e., people who are afraid to admit that they would vote for Trump. I recall it was 15%-20% of those polled as favoring the Dem candidate (in a free and fair election). If that continues, and if there is anything close to a free and fair election, Trump wins in a near landslide in 2024.
boatbuilder: "If DiSantis runs without Trump's blessing he will lose either the primary or the general, because Trump's core is even more solid than that 35% Dem core. And they are not party sheep. They will not vote for DiSantis, or anyone else, if Trump isn't OK with it."
Correct.
Its amazing how many commenters dont understand that fundamental political "facts on the ground" truth, whether one happens to like that or not.
Hmmm. Gee, I hope my use of "one" in the above sentence isnt too triggering for our resident leftists like gadfly. I would hate to think I forced gadfly into another multi-hour thumb-sucking Maddow-binging session....though I can say authoritatively that others have intimated that they are acquainted with people who might believe gadfly does that routinely anyway.
And that would certainly meet the brand new Democratical Hutchison Standard Of Show Trial "Truth"!
"The abandonment of / retreat from Afghanistan seems to have dropped out of calculations. I gather that Trump ordered the experts to give him a workable plan, and they stalled. Or refused. Biden ordered the experts to retreat WITHOUT a plan, and here we are."
What kind of "plan" could there have been? We could have either completely vacated Afghanistan (after 20 futile, failed years in a war we started), or stayed on in an indefinite period of minimal reductions of our invading army remaining in the country. In the end, once we were eventually completely gone, we would have seen the same results in Afghanistan we're seeing now. If we really cared about a more stable Afghanistan, we would never have invaded in the first place.
The entire catastrophe is primarily the responsibility of Bush/Cheney and their criminal administration, but shared with the subsequent administrations of Obama/Biden and Trump/Pence.

But the quirks and mannerisms that annoy so many of us are now amplified. Only a matter of time before late night TV brings such a performance forward.
. . . and less unpopular than Joe, Hill, and Nancy.
Joe Biden gets 38% either favorable or very favorable. Those must be the 38% of the population who either don't use gas or food or are billionaires.
It's interesting that Pelosi and AOC are neck and neck at 11%. Lol.

I'm more concerned there are that many people who would vote for Biden. Just how bad do things have to get?
DeSantis is Trump with a better temperament, an attention span, and better judgment.
By far the best politician during Covid. He kept the schools open.
His unfavorables are pretty low.
And he’s younger than Hunter and Jr.
This is no country for old men.
Too bad Gavin wasn't on the list.

AND! gilbar would be pretty darn near Okay with it.. 'cause Tulsi is Cute
IF they Suddenly become intelligent, and run her in 2024.. She'll Win in a LANDSLIDE

We got a pretty good start on that under Trump IIRC.
Paddy O 2:13 - agree.
The whole 2024 campaign comes down to a promise: $2 Gas and No Mean Tweets.
Now that is change you can believe in.

Need I say more?
@Caligula
and let's not forget about the U.S.-Mexico border, or the firehouse-style government spending binge and resulting inflation.
But 40% of the country will vote for them anyway.
More importantly Trump would have listened to Putin and looked for a way toward peaceful negotiation.
mccullough: "DeSantis is Trump with a better temperament, an attention span, and better judgment."
DeSantis still must prove he can deliver the blue collar midwest and populist voters the way Trump did.

I agree. He never saw a trillion dollar spending bill he didn't like (or sign). In my opinion if he had been re-elected and continued the spending I think we would be in the same inflation boat we're in right now.
My take, after looking at the graphic, is that it's far easier to get people to hate you, than to like you.

*************
Yeah, and the way Biden delivers on his promises is....just like...Trump's.
SNORT
Trump would not have told Putin “where he could shove his ‘red lines’” like Biden did in December.
Desantis wont run if Trump runs.
Or Desantis is a liar.
I think Desantis is smarter than all of the fools and weak hearts that don't want to support Trump.
Basically everyone hates all politicians.
Elon Musk?
So I think Andy is close in many ways.

" I don't know why Biden is so fixed on starting a war. Maybe it's senility or maybe its the Military-Industrial complex."

I am sure you know why Beiden is fixed on starting a war, war is how failed dictators assert their influence.
When and why did they flip the colors? So dems are ok with red again?
Do you believe Putin would have invaded Ukraine if Trump had been re-elected?
Perhaps Putin perceived that Trump gradually would disengage the USA from NATO.
In other words, with Trump as President, there was less and less chance that NATO ever would incorporate Ukraine.
But if I'm reading it right, Ron Desantis is the only one whose very unfavorable rating wasn't higher than his very favorable rating. Pretty sure THAT scares everyone, including Trump.
Elon Musk?
Nope. Born in South Africa.

Let's all continue to pretend Biden actually won the 2020 election, and Trump lost. Our country will continue to slide downhill as long as half of the population is afraid to face the truth, or are just comfortable with absentee voter fraud.

In 2020, in states bounded by the Mississippi River on the West and the Ohio River to the South and East, Biden got 64 electoral votes and Trump got 6 from Indiana. DeSantis doesn't have much of a hill to climb.

gadfly The Hopeless: "In 2020, in states bounded by the Mississippi River on the West and the Ohio River to the South and East, Biden got 64 electoral votes and Trump got 6 from Indiana. DeSantis doesn't have much of a hill to climb."
Hope for the Hopeless!
In 2018 he voted using a New York absentee ballot."
So there you go.
Imagine Trumps's approval rating if the press was as friendly to him as they were to Obama.
Most popular president ever.
The people you mention really NEED to have the bejeezuz scared out of them. Time to think and act like adults instead of god-damned middle schoolers.
