"New York City suddenly removed its color-coded coronavirus alert system on Thursday just as newer Omicron subvariants are fueling another rise in cases and hospitalizations."

"Mayor Eric Adams and health officials quietly took down the city’s high profile alert system that warned New Yorkers when they were at a greater risk of catching the virus and should consider taking more precautions.... Under the color-coded alert system introduced by Mr. Adams in March, certain health policy measures were recommended at each level of risk. At the high risk level, the mayor was encouraged to require face masks in all public indoor settings and to bring back a vaccine mandate for restaurants and bars that was in place under the last mayor, Bill de Blasio. When the city reached the high risk level in May, Mr. Adams chose not to reintroduce mask and vaccine mandates...."

Maybe you don't want policy choices too tightly to the facts about the virus. There are other factors to consider — the economy, the psychology of the people, the political risks. Looking at all the factors — that's science too.

Odds are that you are more likely to be a victim of violent crime in New York City than you are to die of COVID-19.

Another factor would be NY gubernatorial election this fall.

Non-sterilizing, mutagenic medical treatments with forward-looking "benefits". That said, you should probably also wear your porta-petri dish and viral collector for social effect. Best case, you can look forward to immigration reform and other equitable and inclusive policies refreshing pathogenic diversity.

Unless it benefits Trump.

A word is missing between choices and too.

As well as rising herd immunity and falling vaccine efficacy. We're approaching the point where we're better off just letting people get it.

Oooh, a subvariant!! Run!!

What is it with democrats and color-coding?

They love to color-code, especially people...

Covid removed the last mask, ironically, that the so-called expert class wore. I respect none of them. I only respect facts, logic, skepticism, data,, and courage. Courage is the biggee. It reveals all. Any “expert” who mouths the party line or status quo is a fraud. Doctors in particular make me laugh when they pose as anything other than guys who memorize things. As Macbeth said, “Throw physic to the dogs. I’ll none of it.” (Quoting from memory. Cut me some slack.)

But I also have tremendous contempt for scientists, clergy, pundits, journalists, academics … frauds almost all. Weak, pathetic people who will gladly “Just follow orders.”

Am I a cynic? How could any thinking person not be?

Is NYC still masking the small children?

Also science, known before the first mask requirement was dictatorially imposed: widespread masking is useless against a virus.

Also science: the dreaded covid “vaccine” does not keep anyone from getting or spreading the disease, unlike every other vaccine out there. This wasn’t fully known 2 years ago, it is known now. And this is where everyone brings up- “but the flu vaccine…” The flu vaccine works against the variants it’s designed for. And if they guessed right it’s going to be the variants circulating in the world when flu season gets here. If they guessed wrong, oh, well. More people will get the flu

Also science- the evidence is piling up that the dreaded covid “vaccine” is harmful in multiple ways even as it’s completely useless at stopping disease.

I have been all over the US since the outbreak of the virus and to NYC a number of times. No other place has a citizenry more terrified of Covid.

Yeah, I have no doubt that there is an analytical protocol that the City’s most expert experts always apply. It’s called “common sense,” “discretion,” and “the brains God gave you,” but mostly it’s called “CYA.” People are completely fed up with Wu Flu, with alarms about New Wu Flu, with losing jobs and businesses and friends and social life thanks to Wu Flu Panic Lockdown Level 17.54(a) (provisional). So a halfway smart mayor is going to do just what this one is doing.

Perhaps an acknowledgment that Big Daddy NYC can't save you and if you are ill stay home, and if you are susceptible to respiratory diseases take your own steps to protect yourself.

Not in NYC. Masks still required on subways and buses. No one says anything if you don’t wear one (save the occasional Karen) but I’d judge compliance to be 70%. Many people still wear masks walking outside.

New Yorkers aren't terrified of Covid. As citizens of a city of millions--living, working, and traveling in extremely close proximity at all times--they are sensible enough to know the conditions in which infections diseases spread are present in spades in their locale, and they take sensible precautions, as sensible people do. COVID aside, they see everyday, living among throngs of others, that they are not the only persons on the earth and they must accommodate others, out of both consideration and personal caution.
