It's an Althouse blog trivia question. Answer below the fold:
ADDED: If you go to that old post and then click backward to earlier posts, you'll find posts with images! Does that mean I have misremembered? I'm not sure now, but my memory of that flag as the first image is so strong that I'm inclined to think that after I learned how to display an image, I went back to a few recent posts and added an image. There are, I think, 3 earlier posts with images, and I think these were done later, but if anyone said the first image was John Paul Stevens, I will need to give you credit. Partial credit for "Wisconsin Death Trip," baby animals, and Stephen Sprouse.

What I recall from the early days of this blog (how early I don't know) is a Terry Teachout blurb for "The Divine Ms Althouse."
I took the country quiz....
You're Liechtenstein!
Most folks don't take you that seriously, but you really make a big deal out of being independent. You don't do a whole lot for other people, but you make the best of the resources available to you. You really like snow. And mountains. And being independent. And you're probably pretty small.
"What was the first image ever displayed on this blog?"
An image so cringeworthy, so symbolic of failure, it proved easy to surpass by subsequent images on this blog.
Side view of Ann face.

good one - you flunked Professora on her own pop quiz

Damn. I'm Sudan. Questions strike me as rather unfair. "Do you want to be bigger?" Um, anyone not a bodybuilder or a 3-mo.-pregnant woman or a kid is going to say "no," right?
Hmmm. I'm the United Nations too. Not sure I like that.
I am the UN too. A bit unexpected.
OK. I just did the country quiz too. As with a lot of these things, neither answer was very satisfactory for some of the questions. Anyway, with that caveat, I'm Switzerland. Not a very flattering description, but I can't say it's entirely inaccurate. Though I don't believe people think I'm "stuck up." Even sorta.

I took the country quiz. I’m Wisconsin.
Wow, that quiz is brutal!
You're Togo!
Small, quiet, and very insecure, you could hide in just about any crowd. Even a crowd of one or two people. Even though you're virtually anonymous anywhere you go, you could have been wealthy if people hadn't mistreated you and taken your money. This is probably most of why you're insecure. But some people who study you hard think you're cute, so maybe you should try to open up a little.
I’m Thailand! Too hot, but at least I have the best food in the world. And yes I’m proud of my independence, thank you very much.
I like the quiz within a quiz aspect of this post.
Glad to see people taking the old quiz and enjoying the diagnosis!
The "what X are you?" form of quiz became very trite, but this was so long ago and it was a pretty good one.
"Side view of Ann face."
It may very well be that the profile image was first. I wasn't thinking about "displayed" in that sense, but in a post. In any case, it wasn't the side view though.
I remember when the profile was posted. It was in the 2008-2010 time frame.
What about all those Chip Ahoy animated pictures? I think Chip Ahoy pix preceded the profile picture.
I am The World! U.N., though I usually feel more like Denmark.
"... I usually feel more like Denmark."
According to the new David Sedaris book, there's no word for "please" in Danish.
"According to Sedaris . . . there's no word for 'please' in Danish."
According to the Google translator, he's right-- it's two words: vaer venlig.
I looked inside the book at Amazon and found a reference to the airport security at--can you guess? Madison, Wisconsin, 9 April 2003. He was not complimentary.
Those few pages did take me back to the heady early Oughts' They French were furious at us.
Furore francese!
