So... on to Sarah Cooper, the TikTok comedian who lip syncs to snippets of Trump speaking. She doesn't try to imitate Trump, just to demonstrate that something he said is weird and dumb, mostly by facial expressions. The author at Mel, Miles Klee, says Boomers think this is the funniest thing ever and keep pushing Cooper on younger people who are not equivalently amused. Why?
Klee says Cooper is a centrist Democrat, and "nothing in her routine is too edgy or niche to upset or confuse an older audience," and older folk enjoy feeling hip enough to have something from TikTok to share — especially something from a black woman. But younger people may feel the humor is too gentle. It's just repeating Trump's own words, not attacking him for his "cruelties."
And then there's the theory that this kind of comedy is really getting to Trump:
... Cooper’s fans have developed a baseless theory that Trump’s promises to ban TikTok in the U.S. stem from his fury over her videos on the app. This ties back to their delight whenever the president rage-tweeted at Alec Baldwin. What’s funny to them in those SNL cold opens isn’t necessarily the scripted comedy but an anticipation of Trump’s “meltdown” response. This is their version of the conservative obsession with “triggering the libs,” where political humor is measured by how much it pisses off your opponent. The libs love imagining Trump in a tantrum after the Axios interview, and they’re much too eager to believe that in his vendetta against TikTok, he’s merely lashing out at a woman who “owned” him there.I'm a Boomer, but I've never believed this idea that Trump would "melt down" and become crazy or enraged by these imitations of him. He's already more or less of an imitation of himself. He created this character Trump, and he plays him on TV and the internet. It's already comic. If other comics copy his comedy, that's a tribute to his comic creation. I do see other people buying that theory, but am I to believe they're buying it because they are older? Maybe it's mostly that age correlates to centrism, and they're just not as eager to see harsher attacks on Trump, and therefore they have a greater stake in believing that these gentle spoofs are effective.
As for me, I started sharing Sarah Cooper back in mid-May. Here was my take at the time:
I think she's great and also that it's complicated, trying to understand why [the video clips] are so great. It's not merely a matter of hating Trump. I think there's also love — illicit love! — for Trump — illicit because you're supposed to hate him — not necessarily you, you, but some of you — and by having his speech flow through an attractive woman, you become liberated to feel that transgressive love.If I was right, then that's the reason serious Trump haters are resisting Sarah Cooper. And it should be some kind of alert about what love for Cooper's Trump really means!

If I didn't read Althouse, I don't think I'd know anything at all about popular culture. I think I'm fine with that.
Ben Sixsmith wrote a good article about Sarah Cooper that I think you would appreciate, Althouse.
He posits that Trump is already a huge hilarious act, and Sarah Cooper is just clapter.
Remember when one of the Trump/Clinton debates was staged with an actor playing Hillary and an actress playing Trump? The female version of Trump was quite successful in that.
Good post Ann but I must comment on your yesterday’s post about Michelle Obama and the black Norman Rockwell portrait she painted of the family. My first reading of your take was straight up, that you were uplifted by Michelle’s horseshit. This was dispiriting to me that you would fall for such a cheap piece of propaganda.
But in reading through the comments I saw that several took you for being sarcastic, to be trolling. So I reread your commentary and decided they were right. And then I thought, this is Althouse’s greatest post ever. I even read it aloud to my wife followed by reading her many comments.
I assumed, if the sarcastic interpretation was correct that you would reveal your hand this morning. But so far, no. This makes me wonder. Did Althouse fall for Obama’s schlock or didn’t she? Please, we need a reveal. Tell us straight up. I’m begging you.
Who is Sarah Cooper? What's a Tic Toc? Isn't that something Sean Hannity says? When are people going to stop making assumptions about how Boomers think and how we spend our time? If Trump hasn't melted down yet, he's not going to. Time to let the murder hornets loose. Or find some other shiny object for the Millenials to chase. Maybe post it on Tic Toc. Then Hannity can explain it.
"Maybe it's mostly that age correlates to centrism,"
I'm doubtful. I'm of the tail end of the boomers that's always seen the mass of people 5-15 years older than us as batshite crazy. They still are.
What if I just think the lady that plays Trump as a drunk girl at a party is much funnier?
Sarah is just funny. All of the meta analytical pontification diminishes the impact.
I think you have this exactly right.
I stopped eating at the kid's table long ago.

Good for you, Miles. When I was your age, I really didn't know what my parents were thinking. That you have the older generation all figured out is quite impressive. I hope you can pass your awareness on to your kids so that as you get older, they'll recognize the kinds of things that aren't too upsetting or confusing for you, as you try to stay hip.
There's more 'everything needs to be about Trump and it needs to be bad for Trump' than anything meaningful about Cooper. She's got a shtick and she wants to garner eyeballs and it's working....
"Why Your Boomer Parents Are Obsessed With Sarah Cooper/More than anything, older Democrats and #Resistance types want to ‘trigger’ the president."
This is what "doing stupid" looks like. How many "Boomer Parents" (a) know what TikTok is and (b) if they do, know who Sarah Cooper is? 4?
So a nobody on a kid's platform makes fun of Trump and adults AND Trump are (a) supposed to notice and (b) supposed to care so much that it bothers them? Really? Self centered much?
That's way too much thinking about subjects that are not important. Lin Liz Miranda Manuel. Or whatever his name is. Sarah Cooper. TikTok.
Sarah Cooper is a comedian who was not making it as a comedian. She's making it doing Trump lip-synching on TikTok. She's showing, if nothing else, that she can act. She's got great facial animation. She's got some acting talent, so maybe these TikTok things can propel her into a slot. But I suspect people will tire of watching Trump lip-synching so she'd better grab onto something quickly or her 15 minutes will be up.
I cannot wait for LinLiz's 15 minutes to be up. I was over him the first week of Hamilton.
Oh, by the way, my 15 minutes are also up.
Heh. The (Trump) love that dare not speak its name.

I feel the same way. Not about popular culture, but more about this kind of “political culture” that gets portrayed in the media. There are lots of politicians and political writers who get talked about on this blog as though most people know who they are. Matt Tabbi is one of the first to come to mind, and aside from perhaps a few things Althouse has blogged about, I couldn’t tell you much about who he is and what he’s famous for.
I’m also very happy to stay ignorant about a lot of this stuff, as it strikes me as largely joyless, and often just a distraction.
"conservative obsession with “triggering the libs,”"
We deplorables prefer "owning the libs."
Like the supposed Trump meltdowns, prog notions of our obsessions are mostly projection.
But their contempt and ignorance are our strength.
Tell us straight up. I’m begging you.
The crying part was like that famous philosophical statement, "I cried because I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet, so I asked him 'Hey, can I have your shoes?'"
Definition of popular: (of cultural activities or products) intended for or suited to the taste, understanding, or means of the general public rather than specialists or intellectuals
I don’t think Sarah Cooper, TikTok videos of her imitating Trump or Mel magazine (is it even a magazine) fit the definition of popular.
With only 2 exceptions, women aren't funny. They can be amusing and clever, but not funny.

I think that they are looking for a magic bullet. They probably feel like the chances of eating Trump this year are slipping away. After all, their candidate is a life long grifter with rapidly advancing dementia. Hard to get excited about China Joe Biden. But something must be done! Maybe they can trigger Trump into a meltdown.
Oh what nonsense, Boomer!
I’m a boomer. The first Cooper clip I saw here was slightly amusing. The rest less so. Are there really people of any age “obsessed” with her Trump videos?
Joe Biden has dementia. And Trump can be mocked easily for his extemporaneous speech patterns.
Pick your next president.
Born 1952. Definitely a Boomer. Who the eff is Sarah Cooper?
Yes, the Trump they hate is an act - a character he has created to reveal the hatefulness of the Progressive left and the mendacity of the mainstream media. They have certainly risen to the bait. We'll see if he can set the hook.
Lefties are crazy.
No TikTok or Sarah Cooper for me, thanks.
The old saw that American public high schools are good preparation for the stupidity and unfairness of adult life is true. But too many people are stuck in the 'sick burn' phase of life, with childish projection on full display.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

My guess is that she has an automatic favorable response like the one she describes but then also recognizes the absurd and manipulative qualities of what is presented and lampoons her own gut reaction. I doubt that she’ll disclose whether this is a correct assessment but it would be interesting to know.
I’ve only in recent years come to see how ALL politicians are really just actors, so the ability to recognize our reactions to the characters that they represent is very useful and important (like the ability to recognize propaganda.)
Boomers think this is the funniest thing ever
Boomers are 70-75. Boomers may or may not have gone to Woodstock, which was 50 years ago.
Boomer music is great. When I listen to the "oldies" station, I often hear some amazing Motown music that I've never heard before. I'm often struck by how often Boomer music uses the word "love." A lot! Boomers love love. What the hell happened to music that people don't sing about love anymore?
My generation--I can never remember if I am X or Z--our music is not nearly as upbeat as Boomer music. In particular, though, the tonal shift from upbeat Motown music to gangster rap music is striking.
Boomer is now an insult. "Whatever, Boomer." I think they're talking about everybody over 30. That was always a Boomer thing, not to trust anybody over 30. Probably in the old age home the Boomers call each other "Boomer" while they try to act like they are still under 30. If they ever remake Logan's Run, instead of yelling "Carousel!" they can yell "Boomer!" when the not-so-old people blow up because they hit 30.
"Klee says Cooper is a centrist Democrat." Maybe; I don't know that much about her. But that's what they all say: "centrist." Red Diaper Barry was a centrist, too.
"Boomers are 70-75."
Boomers were born between 1946 and 1964, so they're 56 to 74.
"What the hell happened to music that people don't sing about love anymore?"
Try country music.
Unknown: "I often hear some amazing Motown music that I've never heard before."
The doc "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" is about the house band responsible for that music. Great use of 2 hours.
"and older folk enjoy feeling hip ..........— especially something from a black woman"
This is insane imagining. In reality, like me, plenty of the "older folk" probably don't even realize she is black.Sorry Black.
Two things that puzzle me:
1. Camille Paglia thinking Madonna is talented.
2. Ann Althouse thinking Sarah Cooper is funny.
Trump haters are under the impression that Trump freaks out when women make fun of him.
didn't I see her in antman and the wasp, as ghost
