Why did Biden say the African American community is not diverse?

Here's the full statement we've been puzzling over:
"What you all know that most people don't know, unlike the African American community with notable exceptions, the Latino community is an incredibly diverse community, with incredibly different attitudes about different things," Biden said. "You go to Florida, you find a very different attitude about immigration in certain places than you do when you're in Arizona. So it's a very different, a very diverse community."
Quoted in "Biden tries to clarify remarks suggesting lack of diversity in the Black community/The former VP said he recognizes African Americans are not a monolith — "not by identity, not on issues, not at all" (NBC News). The "clarification" is not a clarification at all, just a reversal:
"In no way did I mean to suggest the African American community is a monolith — not by identity, not on issues, not at all," Biden said in a thread of tweets. "Throughout my career I've witnessed the diversity of thought, background, and sentiment within the African American community."
I think what happened is that Biden, in cognitive decline, is losing the ability to maintain the boundary between what is said behind the scenes with his advisers and what is appropriate for speech to the general public.

An honest clarification would be something like: We're trying to win an election, and that means patching together blocs of voters, and realistically, it works to consider black voters as one big group, and it doesn't work to do that with Hispanic voters. But that's something for us to take into account as we craft our public statements, not something that belongs in the public statements.

It's a bit like George H.W. Bush running for reelection in 1992 and saying "Message: I care." It seemed to be the idea he was supposed to keep in mind, not something to say out loud. He got mixed up!

So much served up on this pitch.

"I think what happened is that Biden, in cognitive decline, is losing the ability to maintain the boundary between what is said behind the scenes with his advisers and what is appropriate for speech to the general public."

That has always been Joe Biden. The young Joe Biden, the middle aged Joe Biden, and now the cognitively impaired Joe Biden. That boundary was never apparent, not in his speech or his physical manners. Go back and listen to the Joe Biden of the 70's, 80s, 90s.

The interesting thing about Biden is that he always lets show his real thoughts. If you let Joe talk, you know who Joe is and what he stands for. And sometimes he nails it. To say that the Black American community has no diversity in thought is not an earthquake level statement. Anyone looking at the evidence of their senses can see that. What other ethnic group votes, thinks, repeats mantras, at a 96%-97% clip pace as Black America? To have thoughts outside of what Democrats/Liberals/Progressives want Black Americans to have is to be- GASP!- an independent thinker. Or worse- a Conservative!

Just ask any Black Conservative (when you find one) how they are treated within the Black community.

The thing I'll never understand for as long as I live is how and why the Black community continues to blindly vote Democrat, when Democrats continue to abuse them. The Democrats are the party of the KKK. They are the party of Jim Crow. They are the party that had to be begged, pleaded with, and coerced into voting for the Voting Rights Act (Dems held congress, yet they could not have passed it without a high percentage of Republicans voting for it- so many Democrats continued to vote against it). Democrats are the party of teachers unions, and as such- fight tooth and nail against school choice, charter schools, home schooling. Democrat policies have led to the destruction of the Black family. The worst cities in the US have been run by Democrats for generations. We're talking 50-100 years straight.

Why would anyone, let alone the Black community, vote for Democrats? But after all they have done to destroy the Black community, why would the Black community continue to vote for Democrats at a 95% clip? Certainly not because of diversity of thought.

Rory म्हणाले...

He said it because he believes it. Omigosh, a fifty year politician from a slave state, whose friends and mentors were segregationists, is at heart a racist? What are the odds?

Incidentally, re: "Mr Scranton," my mother grew up in the Wyoming Valley, and though she is very wonderful and opposes racism and is confounded by man's inhumanity to man, she will tell you that the region back then was not exactly crammed with black people.

Doesn't that mean that "Latino" should NOT be capitalized?

Does a jungle dwelling, er, rain forest dwelling, South American Indian, er, South American Native American, have a shared sense of history, identity and community with a wealthy blue-eyed white guy from Spain?

Newspeak is so confusing.

And I think Biden meant correct his thoughtcrime by saying something like: "All groups of people are as incredibly wonderful as every other group of people in every way. Except Trump supporters."

Clark म्हणाले...

I think that's an astute assessment and that the George H.W. Bush comparison is a good one. When looking at his comments purely from the standpoint of political strategy, it is hard to argue that there is more diversity among African Americans as a voting block than Latinos (who have the Cuban community etc... skewing their electoral preferences).

I also think he's a racist. In fact, given the mindset of his left wing base, wouldn't it be terribly inappropriate of him to claim he isn't? He is white, after all. His racism is institutional, systemic and unavoidable. Claiming not to be racist is the most racist thing he could do and indicative only of his naivete and lack of awareness of his own privilege. Their rules...

rhhardin म्हणाले...

Gusty Winds म्हणाले...

The African-American community is a monolith. Held together by the white liberals Malcolm X warned everyone about. A lot of them live in Madison, WI, and expect inner city Milwaukee to vote as expected; as one huge block. The professor’s analysis is spot on. Biden let slip what is said behind closed doors. And, it’s due to his rapid cognitive decline.

He was correct that Latinos are diverse. Cuban-Americans don’t see socialism the same as those that have fled Latin American poverty.

The saddest and most sinister part of all this, is that liberals will not see, or will deny that this is absolutely racist. White Democrats and Liberals will continue to successfully use African-Americans to consolidate power.

Sebastian म्हणाले...

"it works to consider black voters as one big group"

Biden commuted a classic Kinsley gaffe, the inadvertent expression of an inconvenient truth.

Blacks are the most homogeneous voting block. Hispanics are more diverse, partly because the category itself is made up by American progs.

Slight dilemma for progs: we are all supposed to think that all blacks are all uniquely oppressed, and in that sense undiverse, while at the same time we are all supposed to think that blacks are just as diverse as any other group, because. Not that consistency matters.

Exactly. Biden was a rambling wackjob when he first ran for President in 1988.

Unknown म्हणाले...

Far be it from me to defend Joe Biden, but what he said was even more reasonable than your explanation suggests. It wasn't that he said aloud the quiet part, it's just the language of "diversity" has changed around him in the very recent past.

The categories of Latino and Hispanic were always made up. Hispanics are whites, but the Left wanted to divide white into preferred minorities. It kinda sorta referred to all people from Spanish soeaking countries in the Americas, except also some Creole speaking and Portuguese speaking and descendant of Nahuatl speaking and didn't count other black skinned speakers and...and Latino meant well maybe the same group but not exactly because who counts aa Latin American?

So yes, the made-up categories referred to a dozen different cultures.

But African American is another linguistic lie because it means US blacks descended from slaves of west African ethnic origins, not recent Nigerian immigrants nor Egyptians nor white South African immigrants nor Muslim Somalis.

And the politics and culture of Black Americans who are not recent immigrants has been monolithic. He was correct abiut that, and xirrect that thr xulturw and political views if the overlumped "Hispanic community" cannot explain Cuban Americans or Venezuelans voting R.

But since the word "diversity" is now a religion used to bash bad Whites, Biden got in trouble.

This was one of his more lucid comments.

What he meant was, the Democratic Party can depend on Black voters, so he can safely ignore their issues. Hispanics on the other hand, you actually have to pander to. Depending on what type of Hispanic (Cuban, Puerto Rican or Mexican) you offer them different things.

I'm finally starting to see some Black leaders come to the realization that the issues of the Black community can be, and are being, ignored by both parties. The Republicans ignore Black issues, because they know no matter what the Republicans say or do, 85% to 90% of Black people will vote Democratic. The Democrats ignore Black issues, because they know that no matter what the Democrats say or do, 85% to 90% of Black people will vote Democratic. (The Black vote shifted from Republican to Democratic in the 1930's when Jim Crow was still being enforced by the Democratic Party in the South)

If 20% to 25% of Black people voted Republican, Democrats would lose badly and both parties would start paying attention to Black issues.

"Just ask any Black Conservative (when you find one) how they are treated within the Black community."

As far as I can tell it is permitted to be small-c conservative while black, just as long as you're not *a* conservative and you're still a Democrat. I also think a lot of genuine racial tensions are being lovingly fanned this summer by Democrats who fear losing their lock on a large group of voters they have mostly been able to take for granted.

"The thing I'll never understand for as long as I live is how and why the Black community continues to blindly vote Democrat, when Democrats continue to abuse them."

I don't think it's blind. I think it's an issue of high trust / low trust societies. If you're as low-trust as black Americans have lots and lots of historical reasons to be, what are you likely to think about the Invisible Hand? About devolving as much power as practical to states and localities? I think you're going to want power to be centralized as much as possible in a place where you can keep an eye on it, where you can band together to sway it.

I think this (plus activist federal anti-poverty efforts under FDR) is why blacks started voting Democratic in lopsided numbers long before the mid-60s, back when the Democratic Party was the happy home of all those southern segregationist senators, back when Lyndon Johnson was blocking anti-lynching legislation.

Then there's the cultural aspect. Most blacks I know think Republicans don't give a crap about them. Who am I to say they're wrong?

Just trying to rationalize why several people I think know better, would only ever vote Democrat. Most blacks I know, I know through the Army, so there's some conservative-tending selection bias here. I think they're misguided for doing so, but I don't think they're fools.

Fernandinand,

Seems like too many people of privilege are not doing the work.

Latinx is the colonists word, not Latino. Or at least not as much.

Very few Spanish speakers use Latinx. It is a bullshit word that ignores the rich and gendered history of the Spanish language. All nouns, in Spanish, have gender. La silla (feminine) el meson (masculine). And what happens when you need to use the definite or indefinite article? Is it un/el latinx or una/la latinx? If I say "La latinx" it identifies her as a woman just as much as Latina would. If I say "Los Latinxs" about a group, it identifies all as male just as "Los Latinos" would. Are there gender neutral articles? Perhaps Unx instead of un/una? Elx instead of el/la? Elxes & Unxes instead of Unos and Las?

If you want to take it to it's logical conclusion, we would have to do away with Puertoriqueño/a, Cubano/a and Mejicano/a.

It is stupidity on stilts.

Latino itself is an even more bullshit word than Hispanic. Most people who identify as Hispanic speak at least some Spanish. How many speak Latin?

If we are going to use "Latin" to refer to an ethnic group, why not use it to refer to people of Italian heritage rather than people who, theoretically, trace their heritage to Spain?

Latin would really only work with Argentines. The majority, about 60% are of Italian descent. Another large tranche, 10-20% IIRC, are German descent.

As far as Hispanic groups in the US, 90% are of one of three ethnic groups: Puerto Rican, Mexican, Cuban. Other than speaking Spanish (at least notionally. Many don't) they have very little in common. They come from different places (Many Puerto Ricans and Cubans have some or a lot of African blood. Few Mexicans do) Different foods, different customs, different music and culture, different histories, different politics both in the US and ancestry countries and different paths in getting to the US.

It is incredibly insulting to lump all together into one group. Don't talk about Hispanic-Americans. Call them Cuban-Americans, Puerto Ricans, Mexican-Americans.

Or, and I admit this is a really bizarre idea, how about just call us all Americans?

Naaaaah. That's too crazy.

He sees them as not diverse because all he cares about is their voting habits. Whenever you dedicate your life to one particular thing, there is a real danger of not seeing people as human beings and instead seeing them as objects related to whatever your goal is. Whether you are objectifying human beings as voters or sales or sports prospects or weapons platforms or whatever, it is a real risk. Given that Biden's life has been dedicated to politics (and graft) and he was never a big thinker even in his younger days, it is not shocking he thinks this way. The only difference now is in his (even more) addled state, he does not have the awareness on what he should not say out loud.

The thing I'll never understand for as long as I live is how and why the Black community continues to blindly vote Democrat, when Democrats continue to abuse them.

Here is the D.C. area, they want to close polling places in Black neighborhoods; deny people in Black neighborhoods the presence of law enforcement to protect their homes, businesses and lives; close schools in Black neighborhoods and deny Black families suffering under the heavy weight of white privilege from having the same opportunity as them to send their children to non-public schools; concentrate Blacks in housing projects in limited areas of the community; and generally reduce Blacks to the status of dependent children.

But actually, the history of humanity has been to go along with or support or embrace tyrants.

Biden talking about putting "y'all back in chains" is exactly what the Dems/progressives want to do.

Blacks seem to have the most pressure on them to stay in their lane, and that pressure comes from other Blacks as well as Whites on the left. Biden said it because he believes it and for a politician, to a first approximation, it's true. Blacks basically all vote Democrat. Done. He doesn't need to appeal to them. His outreach is - like basically all political outreach to Blacks - mostly performative, and the audience for that performance is mostly suburban Whites. Not entirely -- when Biden puts on an accent (put "y'all" back in chains) he's probably pitching what he thinks Blacks want to hear. But he mostly treats Blacks as locked in Democrat votes, not people he has to appeal to meaningfully. And that's mostly accurate.

And he's also accurate that Hispanics are different. Despite all the efforts to paint Trump as an anti-Hispanic racist, polling in July suggested that they were one of the few groups where his polling was improving vs. 2016. That's a problem for Democrats, so Biden's minders are probably quite focused on it.

What Biden is saying - or trying to say - is absolutely correct. The "Hispanic" community is NOT a community. The thing they have in common is they come from south of the border. that's it. A middle class Cuban, a black Guatemalan, a working class Aztec Mexican, and a Argentinian Jew from Buenos Aries are all "Hispanic". Politically, the R's get about 25-30% of hispanics.

Black folks, OTOH, vote 80-90% in election after election. In terms of religion, culture, and historical experience, they are remarkably homogeneous. Even in terms of the economics, they are more similar than any other ethnic group in the USA.

I think it's more classic Biden-speak than cognitive decline. His decline, which is very real, manifests as the slower pace of his speech, phrasing in reverse order ("forward looking" vs "looking forward"), and expressing retrograde ideas, such as "make sure the record player is on."

Still beyond belief he couldn't win a primary in two presidential efforts during his best days but now he's the nominee in his twilight.

There actually is some diversity of thought among Black Americans, because there are actually three geographically-distinct subgroups - and I'm not talking about conservative Blacks like Clarence Thomas, Herman Cain, and Thomas Sowell vs the rest, or northern vs southern.

When I taught at a tiny private school in the south a few years back, we had 3 black students (out of 40 total): one traditional black American, post-Confederate, descendant of slaves, however you want to put it; one child of Haitian and Dominican immigrants; one child of Nigerian immigrants. They would get into long arguments as to which of them, and which group, counted as "really black", while the other students and all the teachers discreetly rolled their eyes.

I don't know how homogeneous the second and third groups - Caribbean immigrants and straight-from-Africa immigrants - are. If we had had more than one traditional post-Confederate black students, I suspect they would have stuck together against the others. (Not really against-against: all three got along well with each other and with the other students when not arguing about blackness.) However, if we had had (e.g.) a Jamaican and a Trinidadian as well as the Haitian-Dominican, and a Ghanaian and an Ethiopian as well as the Nigerian, would they have still divided three ways, or would they have divided seven ways in their arguments about who was really black?

Just spitballing here . . . but is it possible that in this one instance, Slow Joe was correct? In essence, he was saying (and I have no experience translating from Dementia to Plain English, so I could be off)) that Hispanics tend to be more independent and individualistic than Blacks. That has been my experience; and speaking politically I think it is a fact of life that Hispanics are less in thrall to the "liberal" Plantation than Blacks. In addition, the Black Left and their White Liberal "Uncle Toms" have been telling us that values of individualism and independence--along with the dreaded"R" word*--are White values, and therefore to be contemned. Maybe Crack Emcee, our resident African American scholar, can clarify, along with Howard and Inga, obviously no friends to the R-word.

One big problem with the strategy discussion versus public statement explanation is that black people were not part of the question he was answering. It's not just, why did he say there was no diversity among blacks, but why did he say anything at all about blacks in answer to that question?

Here's something else curious--of course we remember his claim that if you even think about voting for Trump, you're not black. That was also a denial of diversity in the black community--not just a denial, but an enforced denial. In Joe Biden's America, blacks aren't even allowed to have their own personal set of values.

Quite right. The biggest of the 3 groups is called ADOS, American Descendants of Slavery. The second is Caribbean black though more likely to be considered Haitian-Dominican than "black" or African-American and the third is African black.

Caribbean and African blacks do considerably better financially, educationally and by other measures in the US than do ADOS blacks. Even better, ISTR, than whites overall. They are resented by the ADOS blacks.

Yeah, good times.

But I always got a kick out of people who would argue with me that she did not have a "stroke" in 14 but an "Intracerebral hemorage" which is the 2 dollar word for a stroke.

And then they would get into an argument about whether she fell down and hit her head causing a stroke or had a stroke causing her to fall down and hit her head.

The key is how adamant they were about denying that she had a "stroke".

As for Biden, he has had the top of his skull off twice. He, himself, on various occasions, admitted that it affected him and changed him. There is pretty well documented medical literature that nobody ever comes all the way back from that kind of operation.

And he was not even all the way there before the op.

So pointing out his mental decline seems fair game.

Michelle Dulak Thomson म्हणाले...

Ann, you're right: what Biden made originally was a category error, kind of like throwing the cake recipe in the bowl along with the flour and butter and eggs. The "clarification" was, of course, nothing of the kind. And, as several above have noted, the missing word from both statements was "Cuban."

As for "latinx," if anyone of Hispanic descent actually tried to pronounce the word, it'd probably be "la-TEEN-eck-ees" "equis" being our "x" But, as someone above also stated, it's pretty useless getting around Spanish gender endings without also coming up with an ungendered article to go with your new word, so that it can be used while, y'know, speaking in Spanish.

Put differently, it's not obviously a function of cognitive "decline." Mr. Biden has long (25+ years) been known as a gaffe machine, to the point where it's part of his political personae.

side note: it's also why the Obama campaign would hide Mr. Biden down the stretch.

This why I think the big build up for the inevitable Biden health scare or verbal explosion during the debates will not be the coupe de grace to the Biden campaign we think it will be. When the democrats can count on the media to act as their praetorian guard 24/7 such incidents have limited immediate impact but are corrosive nonetheless.

Watching Hillary stand rigidly like a grocery store standee while waiting for the secret service van to collect her was jarring when I first saw it and was the first tip off maybe she wasn't the shoe in the media was feeding me 24/7.
