Teens are mocking Lin-Manuel Miranda on TikTok.

Yeah, I know, Trump is making noise about ending TikTok, so maybe the Trump hating Broadway rapper will be saved by a man he loathes, but it's interesting that the new generation — Generation Z — has a new point of view, and, for them Lin-Manuel Miranda is not a brilliant and completely hip visionary. He's a figure of fun.

New York Magazine explains:
And it’s not just one meme but a variety of them: The most prevalent is the lip-biting meme, which involves mocking the endless stream of selfies Miranda has taken wherein he gazes foppishly at the camera while chewing his lip. There’s also a bit of audio floating around of Miranda reading an erotic excerpt from The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao which has become fodder for endless derision — one teen superimposed themself cringing over a series of lip-biting selfies, nearly vomiting when Miranda accentuates the word “clit.” Another popular video is just a clip of Miranda, tousle-haired and lying in bed, telling the viewer “I’m clutching my balls because they’re warm” — no commentary needed. And, of course, there are the endless parodies of him rapping.
The last 3 links in that paragraph all go to TikTok — so click them while they still work. They're all very funny.

The New York Magazine article relies heavily on this Rolling Stone article, "Why Gen Z Turned on Lin-Manuel Miranda/Teens on TikTok have begun mercilessly mocking the Pulitzer Prize-winning Hamilton playwright."

Both articles try to figure out if the Gen Z kids are targeting Miranda because "Hamilton" is insufficiently woke, in that it doesn't deal with slavery and Native Americans and the female characters are all about wanting to have sex with the character Miranda played on stage, Alexander Hamilton. The TikTok stuff is silly, though. Laughing at “I’m clutching my balls because they’re warm” has nothing to do with a desire for more wokeness. That video is, fittingly, about going to sleep and, perhaps, a man's vanity in thinking people want to watch him get into his sleeping position.

I'm observing a strong dividing line amongst Gen Z- the oldest are the most woke but the younger you go there seems to be a strong rejection of woke and cancel culture. The line is somewhere around junior or senior in high school...

Miranda seems ripe for mocking. He's a bit of an angry cartoon character, like the way Trump is. He has a goofy looking, expressive face and not much of a verbal filter. Prime breeding ground for fun...

The guy got my granddaughter (16) and her BFF to read Chernow's Hamilton after they saw the play.

He also got out of bed on a Sunday morning to do a whatsapp video chat with my daughter and a gaggle of her best buds.

I don't like him taking part in the Goya boycott. And the bits and pieces of Hamilton I've seen on YouTube are not my cup of tea.

But for the two things with my granddaughter, I thank him. He is OK in my book.

Teens will always mock authority figures, which I define as people trying to tell you what to do, what to say, etc.

"Themself?" First time I've seen that word. How long has it been in use?

If they were doing this to another kid in their high school, would it be bullying?

I'm not a fan of Lin Manuel personally, but it is the easiest thing in the world to try to tear something down. The kids are bored, and destruction must be done.

Older people get mocked by younger people. It's the circle of life.

Kids. No filter, no respect, no shame. Lin-Carmen Miranda is a national treasure chest of pretension. I can't ever forgive him for his disgraceful treatment of Mike Pence.

That bearded clam needs a sitcom to showcase his talent... something along the lines of Idiocracy’s Ow, My Balls!

So the device you watch TikTok on isn’t used for any medical or personal transactions, cool. No photos or videos or stored credit card data you don’t mind sharing with a friendly bullion or so close friends in China are on it. No passwords. That’s good. Because the one admitted security flaw is the keylogger sending a constant stream of bytes reflecting every keystroke made to a server in Xinua. Wait. It’s the keylogger and the clipboard. That’s right. TikTok admitted the feedback loop that shares every thing you copy, whether you paste it or not, also is a known flaw BUT THEY SWEAR THEY’RE NOT KEEPING A RECORD even though they have the ability to... And a freaking enormous server farm devoted to it. But they’re not stealing data. Just uh analyzing it.

So I’m glad your device is secure, Althouse.

A little off topic, but I think banning Wechat is probably going to hurt Republicans in a way that banning TikTok won't. It may still be the right thing to do (for the same security reasons China bans Facebook, Google, Line, Kakao, Whatsapp, etc.) But recent Chinese immigrants are in general a lot more contemptuous of the progressive racial balancing/Black Lives Matter type actions than other minorities. There's a variety of reasons for this, but one is that they can see perfectly clearly that while progressives pretend to be anti-White, they're really taking aim at the kinds of structures and institutions that have kept the door open for Asian success, e.g. standardised exams, race-blind admissions, etc. My understanding is that Chinese-American campaigns organised through Wechat have been important in places like California and New York, when pushing back against efforts to reintroduce racially discriminatory admissions policies, or even just trying to dump homeless people into Chinese-American neighbourhoods. Chinese immigrants aren't generally Republican, but that kind of Progressive nonsense is what turns immigrant groups into Republicans. Banning Wechat is potentially going to provoke a lot of resentment and block that effect.

TeeTee is for women and gays. It uploads your biometric data to a server farm in Fujian province for god knows what purpose (although time will solve that problem).

Don't use tiktok. Tiktok as asshoe.

Oh. I assumed "teens" meant the same thing that it means in the MSM, namely a group of BLACK criminals.

Speaking of Hamilton, I would like to see a new aircraft carrier named after him.

(Did you like how I smoothly segued into something completely off topic?)

Good. Serves him right. He is a devoted follower of the terrorist that Obama let walk free...Oscar Lopez Rivera, whilst he was berating Mike Pence. I hope he likes it!! ....Karma baby!!!!

I don't know the mother but met 2 aunts and they seem very nice and normal.

They run a little coffee shop and museum in Vega Alta.

The aunt is the one who woke him up to chat with my granddaughter.

Culture-stealing prick.

I want to know why it's OK for Black actors to portray White characters, but not OK for White actors to play characters from other races? Hell, White voice actors can't even dub non-White characters any more.

Speaking of Hamilton, I would like to see a new aircraft carrier named after him.

He was key in the creation of the Coast Guard, perhaps a Coast Guard cutter. He served in the artillery, so maybe the HQ of Army artillery.

Whuts uh TikTok?

Ron Winkleheimer म्हणाले...

Teens are mocking him because he is pretentious. Mocking the pretentious is what teens do.

I never understood the conspicuous, must-be-publicly-displayed popularity of "Hamilton" with a certain sector of pre-woke, liberal White Folk. What a shock it will be for them to find their Hamilton keychains and memorization of the Immigrants rap won't cut it with the rambunctious youngsters when the show trials start.

I saw Hamilton on Disney a few weeks ago. I expected to be bored, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was brilliant. I expect artists to have stupid politics and will forgive a lot. The Pence family bullying crosses a line, but if Hamilton gets young people interested in the founders, then I can overlook even that.

Many of those Gen Z-ers cut their teeth posting on the chans, where no quarter is given in these situations. Stupidity is called out frequently. If anyone here has spent time on 4chan or 8chan (8kun now), you know that the language is salty and the meme posting can get dank. I find it all hilarious.
