... there's something old and new for you and me.

And this old blog will keep rolling, but you can help if you do your Amazon shopping through The Althouse Portal. [If you've been waiting for Milo's book, it's finally out: here. Personally, I'm reading "The Smear: How Shady Political Operatives and Fake News Control What You See, What You Think, and How You Vote."]

My stepson's brother in law restores Model A Fords. He has about four of them he is working on. One is finished and gorgeous.

He has one body that he bought to restore. Just the body but it has some original paint on it and he paid $30,000 for the body.

That's a hobby. He builds winery machinery in Oregon's wine country.

Elizabeth Warren's opponent, a real Indian (dot not feather) gave Warren a DNA kit for her birthday, which Fauxahontas did not appreciate.

“I’m deeply saddened @SenWarren refused my thoughtful (gift-wrapped) Birthday Gift: the 23&me DNA Test Kit,” Ayyadurai tweeted Sunday. “Most unfortunate! #FakeIndian.”

Now that's Trump level trolling there.

Michael K, you'd think Model A's would be common enough for the price to be lower--or are all classics not in museums or Leno's out of sight these days?

What they really need is a revival of "Into the Woods".

Unfortunately, "talent" and "virtue" are not qualities I associate with today's elites. As Glenn Reynolds has pointed out, the West is cursed with a feckless and largely mediocre ruling class.

Which is why we got Trump.

"the West is cursed with a feckless and largely mediocre ruling class. "

One major problem is the deterioration of education. College faculties got taken over by draft dodgers who stayed in school to avoid Vietnam and became the next generation of professors.

Now, the next generation, and what's left of the draft dodger generation, have gone bonkers with weird ideas that are not logical.

Critical thinking is no longer taught in college.

Freshmen and seniors at about 200 colleges across the U.S. take a little-known test every year to measure how much better they get at learning to think. The results are discouraging.

At more than half of schools, at least a third of seniors were unable to make a cohesive argument, assess the quality of evidence in a document or interpret data in a table, The Wall Street Journal found after reviewing the latest results from dozens of public colleges and universities that gave the exam between 2013 and 2016. (See full results.)

At some of the most prestigious flagship universities, test results indicate the average graduate shows little or no improvement in critical thinking over four years.

An analogy might be madrassas when memorization of the Quran is the curriculum.

That resembles
what goes on at UCLA for example.

Even leftist professors are run out of town for wrong thinking.

The "Ruling Class" probably get the worst education since they are going by class rules and branding rather than real education.

Michael K....we have a friend that wants to sell a 1927 Model A roadster pick up. I think he is asking 17,500 for it. I think he still wants to sell it. It is a driver, in good condition. He drives it often in parades as a representative of a Veterans group, WWII vet. We tried to help him on Craigslist, but the market for Model A vehicles is pretty slim in some areas.

My daughter got married at a winery in the Napa Sonoma region. One of the neat things that they could also use for the wedding was a collection of restored vintage cars. Very cool. Many winery wedding venues have these classic cars.

Most state secretaries of state are refusing to provide to the Trump administration voter information that is public information under the laws of the state. Regardless the merits of the voter fraud investigation, for high level state officials to refuse to produce public information is a clear violation of their oath to follow the law. FOIA laws don't mean that politicians get to choose and pick what needs to be produced.

Personally, I don't understand why party affiliation, voting history, is public information, and I'm sure many voters had no idea the fact that they elected not to vote in a particular election is public information. Now that there is more awareness of this issue, perhaps some states will determine that such information should be kept private. If so, the voter fraud investigation will have at least some positive benefit.

It looks to be in decent condition, too. A client just paid $25K for a '68 in great shape from a woman on Martha's Vineyard. He says I can buy it when he's sick of it. He's the type of guy who will probably put 500 miles on it and get sick of it, so fingers crossed.

Otherwise I'll have to sell body parts for this ICON Defender.

"Many winery wedding venues have these classic cars."

This fellow lives in the Oregon winery area and began as a diesel mechanic. He got involved in servicing winery machinery and is now building the plants for the wineries, which are sprouting all over that area.

The Model As he is working on are mostly post 1932, I think, and I don't know why the body he bought was so valuable.

The McMinnville aviation museum is nearby and there are some nice restored old cars there, My stepson;s other brother in law restores old Porsches and they are super valuable.

Here is their web site. Among his clients as Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld.

The guy restoring Model As is doing it all himself, including rebuilding engines.

Albuquerque has a "non-partisan" city government, which is a figleaf so that university professors and Sandia Corp. employees can run for office.
When someone announces that he is running, the first thing the media do, is run to the county clerk's office to check his party registration and then publish it with whatever else they can dig up - especially if he is a Republican.
OTOH, when an air traffic controller ran, and he announced he was running as a Republican, they all but ran him out of town, denouncing his outrageous partisanship and breaking the code.

Oh, and they did manage to get him called up before some board in the FAA, or whatever, and disciplined for running for "political" office while a Federal employee, but that was well after the election was over, and he had lost, so it was just for revenge and a warning to others.

There was an article linked at Instapundit just yesterday (maybe earlier today?) that was published in The National Interest by a David Gioe called The History of Fake News, one of the principal points of which is that the schools no longer teach the skills necessary to 'thinking critically'. I have almost nothing to do with academic sorts these days-- do instructors really give their students lists of 'approved authors' for use in doing research for their writing projects? Good heavens.

Happy Independence Day!

All this car talk got me interested in MG TDs again. I've been thinking about getting one for ten years.

Found one very cheap that looks in very good condition.

Not a car I would commute in but it would be a nice toy.

Plenty of them around.

I understand they have odd bolt sizes.

Hagar म्हणाले...

Some bolts and nuts are odd-sized, but the biggest problem for an elderly person is that you need to spend Saturday morning checking all of them for proper tightness - also all screws - under, over, and all around the car. Also clean and adjust the carburettors, which is a whole another story in itself.

Hagar म्हणाले...

Marc, yup. I recently had a young woman ask me "what is the Republican fact check?". She thought she was taunting me.

I started out explaining how counter-intuitive that was. "So the entire newspaper is false, but this one column over here has been checked for accuracy?".

I went on, won't give the entire argument here. But by the time I was finished she was vile and violent. A sudden shriek and then she collapsed into a melty puddle of snowflakes.

It's amusing on one level - the Marxists indoctrination the kids to create a new Red Guard that shatters itself upon first contact with the enemy. Ooops.

Jaq म्हणाले...

Compared to anywhere else, the melting pot works.

A little behind the times aren't you? "melting pot" is RAYCIST! You can't expect people to learn English and adopt our traditions!

Besides, legal immigration, under the direction of a properly elected national government has never been an issue. Who are you addressing? What next? Apple pie is sure good? Or are you such a good leftie that once "illegal immigrant" was banned from the press, you banned it from your thinking too?

Marc in Eugene म्हणाले...

Yes, amusing from the one perspective. But it won't be if the 'new Civil War' comes, or some analogous event or series of them, and if communities really do have to re-assemble themselves 'from the ground up'; I think that nonsense very unlikely, however, so am content to be amused. Some of the kids can't follow a series of simple verbal instructions without having to have one or two or them repeated and, believe me, I don't stutter in Bulgarian when I'm giving them to 'em. I can't imagine what it must be like for people in the professions, in the military, in the skilled trades, to have to try to teach adults who think like children think.
