"Most likely the ancestors of the Norwegian Forest cat served as ships' cats (mousers) on Viking ships.[8] The original landrace lived in the Norwegian forests for many centuries, but were later prized for their hunting skills and were used on Norwegian farms,[9] until they were discovered in the early twentieth century by cat enthusiasts."
What did the Vikings do about the cat pee and shit? Did they have litter boxes back then? How would you like to be the Viking who had to clean up after the cats? Sure, you still get to say you're a Viking to all the ladies, you just have to hope they don't ask any followup questions.
"I wish it would catch the underground critter that just pulled the central stalk of my Hosta down like it was on an elevator."
Voles. Especially if the roots are all gone. Well known hosta critter. I know some people have them so badly they plant their hostas with wire mesh around the roots, or if you live in zone 6 or 7, in pots above ground.
I wonder if Norwegian Forest Cats are related to Mainecoons. They certainly have many similar traits. Mainecoons are cool. If they're not related it could be convergent evolution that makes them so similar.
It's thought that cats have their DNA arranged in the way that is closest to the way the first mammal (not reproducing by eggs) had its DNA arranged. I like the idea especially when you see a cat or a picture like this of a cat being wild. They have long history of not conforming.
Birds have a high mortality no matter what, but they reproduce at a rate high enough to have two surviving long enough to have two surviving grandchildren.
The problem with cats is non-feral cats, who do not die off when the birds die off because they get fed at home as well.
No Lotka-Volterra equation for domestic cats vs birds.
Am I a bad person for enjoying watching Nate Silver once again scramble around, putting off admitting the obvious? Ossoff has lost (having outspent his opponent by 10 million in a meaningless house race), you can hear the fat lady sing.

They both have the "M" marking on their foreheads.
What if you could send cat DNA to those testing places?
With 79% of the precincts reporting, Handel has a lead of roughly 12,500 votes. If this election was a referendum on Donald Trump, then the Des just wasted their money.
All that money and attention Ossoff got really hurt him. He did much better the first time. I guess making this about the "resistance" wasn't such a good idea.
Did anyone see the article by a Dem about how the activist and corporation swung the Dems to an extreme position on illegal immigration? Maybe they are coming back to their senses.
It was in the New Yorker or something like that. I read most of it but got bored and didn't finish.
It was Peter Beinart in The Atlantic. I don't blame you for getting bored. But there is gold in there. Beinart basically admits that multi-culturalism is a failure. And he suggests that Americans would be open to more immigration if the immigrants spoke English. Those two ideas are a double Wow for a democrat.
I wonder if Norwegian Forest Cats are related to Mainecoons.
It is a distinct possibility. One theory is that Maine Coons are descended from cats brought to North America by the Norse. In any case they are definitely imports from Europe.
We were surprised by our two kittens evolutionary instinct(?). They were indoor cats, never stepped foot.. er paw... outside.
Then one day we let them out on the deck. WHAM! Two bird kills in first 5 mins. Ancestral possession, like they had been doing it for years.
One was a jumper, the other with stronger forelimbs. The first would jump up 6 feet to swat the bird out of the air, the second would pounce on the downed bird to grab and administer the killing blow.
Some squirrels tore into a fifty pound sack of sunflower seeds in the backyard earlier this year. Decided to let it ride. Backyard now full of obese wildlife.
"Stop blaming cats: As many as 988 million birds die annually in window collisions."
I look at it from the other side..think of how many more annoying birds we would have to put up with, including their shit, if it wasn't for the cats keeping their numbers down.

Shhh ... være veldig veldig stille...
Looks a lot like our Maine Coon Cat.
Also snakes, moles, voles, birds, moths, butterflies, chipmunks, toads and your ankle.

As jealous as a green-eyed cat.

You will not see a Seth Rich murder investigation on DateLine.
Look at that face. That is a face.
@Althouse, I never took you for a cat lady.
@Big Mike
Althouse is a liberal and feminist. That puts her at extreme risk for becoming a crazy cat woman.
Wow. Incredible photo.
Whose cat is that?

I wish the local cats would kill some of the squirrels. I don't mind the bunnies and chipmunks.
The Incidental Shamrock would make a great book title.
Apparently they're doing more than their fair share to kill off a number of bird species - and others, to extinction.
Today is Brian Wilson's 75th birthday.
Who would have thought that he would be the Wilson brother to make it to that milestone?
538 appears to be having a sad.
That's no Tabby Cat. Are they sure that it's tame? I'll take half tamed, like most of my friends.

I haven't seen my feral cat or her kittens in a couple days. I suspect they've moved to the back fence where there's more game.

Boo Hoo! Handel will win handily in GA6. Where's the next place where voters will reject Trump?

So, it’s sort of silly to run a regression based on five data points...
-Nate Silver
Yes Nate. Since November we've had countless data points that the left is sort of silly.
BL, Drudge Report.
NYT reported margin is greater than five points. Clearly this special election is no longer a referendum on Trump.
In a nod from God, heavy afternoon rain in democratic precincts.
The reason Trump hasn't fired cruise missiles into North Korea yet, is that it is such a target-rich environment.
He's like an arsonist at a propane dealership. Where to start?
My feeling is, there are three start-up targets.
1) The airport in the capital.
2) The Bureau of Prisons Headquarters.
3) U.S.S. Pueblo

That would be pretty great.
Ace of spades HQ just called Georgia for Handel.
Wipe out! The Russians did it.
Karen Handel for Speaker of the House. All she needs is Commissar DJT's endorsement, with Putin's OK, of course.
You do know that Russia moved the Braves into the 6th District. Those guys are smart.

DNA testing for cats is pretty routine..there are lots of businesses that do it.
