In a spate of bread baking again. Just turned out a nice olive, pickled onion, and asiago cheese loaf with wheat, whole wheat, and rye flour. But there are concerns about the "past the lips and onto the hips" thing.

Got a digital kitchen scale from Amazon. That and using "bakers' measure" should help make replicable recipes in small size.

The Daily Mail has rolled out an interview with Prince's drug dealer. The interview claims that Prince had a voracious appetite for opiates. He must have never pooped.

His body isn't even room temperature, and they are already dragging Prince through the mud.

A Letter from Miss Harriet Tubman, Kansas, 1954:

No, I am not THAT Harriet Tubman.

I am in my thirties now, a spinster, but as a white God-fearing woman I have no real rue or regrets. Maybe that I didn't run off with the Anders boy, but I believe I made God's Choice right proper. Plus he was a strawberry redhead, and that's that.

It must be tough to be a negro, though: you had everything you could have ever possibly wanted -- shelter, food, security, a purpose -- and you gave it all up for Freedom.

Freedom: it makes people rue things that they shouldn't even have'd to have ever even thinked about.

Sure, it's good to be Free, but Free and an empty stomach is just an empty stomach. mostly. I bet a negro's empty stomach isn't much different than the empty stomach of a white man, although maybe there's science there I don't know about.

In Heaven I won't need no Freedom, and wherever negroes end up I hope it's pretty much the same.

Maybe I should read some more books.

I am Laslo.

Had to put down our 17 year old cat yesterday. I don't regret it, but it was not fun. Clyde the Glide. Great name for a great cat. We got him shortly after we were married.

Wow.

Frank had regrets, enough to mention why he shouldn't mention them.

Wow that field and its approaching unhumanness as splendor.

Might be true, but I would not bet the ranch on it.

Are those rue anemones (Thalictrum thalictroides) or false rue anemones (Enemion biternatum)?

I don't want to hear about any false regrets about nothing (à la Obama) or no regrets about false nothings (à la Clinton).

I wake up to a random saved Imus show on Saturdays and Sundays. Today's random show reported the death of Bobby Fisher.

"Checkmate," said Imus's Bernard McGuirk.

I don't know that much about Prince, and I mean no disrespect to his talent, but maybe musicians were better off when they were considered more like artisans than divinely inspired geniuses. Life is hard enough to figure out without people treating you like a demigod. I'm sure everyone respected the talent of Jerome Kern and Louis Armstrong but they weren't expected to transform lives or voice the inchoate yearnings of the masses. It was sufficient for them to lend a few moments of passing pleasure to people's lives, which they did in abundance. Rock stars lead such toxic lives. It's a wonder more of them don't OD or support Bernie Sanders.

Wonderful photo. On my small screen the flowers look like lilies of the valley so I googled lily of the valley and rue and it took me to a cafe in Paris. Enjoyed the trip, still not sure if they are the same plant

I just went through that experience two weeks ago -- it takes it out of you.

My sincere condolences.

I am Laslo.

Thanks for the good wishes, folks. We'd call him the Glide from time to time, but mostly it was just Clyde.
