I planted night-scented stock this year, and it's just starting to flower. Teeny, tiny flowers that produce a great amount of fragrance. I hope it self-seeds.

I saw a great documentary on Netflix called Milius, about John Milius who wrote Apocalypse Now and Red Dawn, among many other movies.

He didn't work for six years in Hollywood after coming off of those movies. Red Dawn was considered "irresponsible" and "jingoistic." This was after a hugely successful career including Conan the Barbarian, and Dirty Harry. He wrote the speech in Jaws about the shark attacks after the Indianapolis was sunk in WWII that was the most affecting part of the whole movie, if you ask me.

But he was so broke after being shut out he tried to get a job as a staff writer on a TV series to send his kid to college. That is what lefties will do to the wrong thinkers.

Of course everybody in Hollywood denies there is a "black list" for conservatives.

Watching CNN this morning on a treadmill in a hotel. A segment on a black church burned in S. C. The blonde news reader's expression was priceless when the first guest she had informed her that the FBI had determined the fire was caused by a lightening strike. No accelerants were found.. The blonde was devastated only momentarily. The first words out of her mouth were "But still...."

Protecting humanity from ice ages

I do not know about the professor's conclusions, but agree on the periodicity of climate variations, whatever the causes might be.

Also that warming we can deal with and adjust to; severe cooling now, that could be another matter.

Jaq म्हणाले...

I always say that if you project the "hockey stick" into the future without the "blade" it just gets colder and colder "global cooling" which was a widely accepted theory in the '70s. Throw in the fact that the sun is going into a hibernation, and without the industrial revolution, we could be in some serious trouble right now.

But these thoughts are not allowed because they are "irresponsible."

Jaq म्हणाले...

The Guardian on the "weak sun" in case anybody is suggesting that is right wing propaganda funded by the Koch Bros.

The firm I'm working at will be closed on Friday.

Holiday weekends in New Jersey sort of suck if you want to drive anywhere to take advantage of a long weekend. Roads are crowded and hotel bookings cost a lot. So I'm trying to persuade my partner that we should use Friday and Saturday to do some long-needed housecleaning, then take the train into NYC on Sunday to find some fun stuff to do.

Got plans?

Sounds like a good plan, except for the housekeeping. You're right about trying to go to the shore this weekend. Mrs. Tank has to work at B&N on Friday and Saturday, but we too could end up in the city on Sunday. If it's your kind of thing, I recommend spending an hour at this. We really enjoyed it. And it's right across the street from Central Park and the outdoor bar there.

Chris Squire from Yes passed on a couple of days ago. I found this video explaining his first meeting with Jimi Hendrix. He was an excellent bass player, and he tells a hell of a story.

Scott म्हणाले...

Hey Mr Tank, it sounds like fun. I saw a documentary on Hirschfeld, and found his technique fascinating. He would do a rough pencil sketch, then draw over it in India ink with a technical pen. After the ink dried, he would take a big gum eraser and erase the pencil sketch. Voila! I will definitely run the idea by co-conspirator to see what he thinks. Thanks!

Anyone interested in an Althouse-fan meetup in New York City on Sunday July 5?

That's the way I always handled holiday weekends. Conversely, I found the campgrounds king of empty the weekend before and after.

Nah, you can always put on another coat.

Scott म्हणाले...

@madAsHell: I didn't see that. Chris Squire RIP. He was a virtuoso. There are not many bass players whose recorded work can be described as breathtaking. (Thinking particularly about Roundabout.)

Also, I don't think people who are into Bob Dylan are into progressive rock. It could be a generational thing.

Hagar म्हणाले...

If the current Ice Age ends, and the earth goes back to "normal" temperatures, all the polar ice melts and sealevels rise so that the coastal regions are under water, that is OK; we will just move inland, and large areas of Canada and Siberia, which are now uninhabitable, would become arable again.

If we are heading into another glaciation - which is most likely - ending 100,000 years hence with 2 miles of ice over Chicago and reindeer herds grazing in Spain, there will be little land left for growing crops to support perhaps 25 billion humans. 25 million survivors may be more like it.

Note that "99% of the scientists" write about the benign climate in most of dinosaur times, with lots of O2 and CO2 in the atmosphere, which enabled the plantlife to grow luxuriantly and the dinosaurs to grow so large.

Hagar म्हणाले...

But for perspective, note that recorded human history is barely 3,000 years old.

The obituary in today's NY Times for Nicholas Winton is an amazing story. If you've lost your faith in humanity, it will restore it. If you still have your faith in humanity, it will confirm it.

Came across this and don't know he here else to put it. It's quite good, I think. Written by a white girl/woman about the questions she would get about slavery while leading tours at a plantation. I was quite surprised at some of them. It puts things in perspective.

ELENA, Mont. (AP) — A Montana man said Wednesday that he was inspired by last week's U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage to apply for a marriage license so that he can legally wed his second wife.

Nathan Collier and his wives Victoria and Christine applied at the Yellowstone County Courthouse in Billings on Tuesday in an attempt to legitimize their polygamous marriage. Montana, like all 50 states, outlaws bigamy — holding multiple marriage licenses — but Collier said he plans to sue if the application is denied.

I am waiting for the first openly incestuous application. Ah, well, at least it generates plenty of work for the county attorney.

Maybe, but I seriously doubt it. I've been reading a lot of histories of the '30's and '40's recently and it is striking how ordinary people endured and rose to the challenges of their times. Yeah, I know they were all racist homophobes but, Jesus, they were giants compared to the self-obsessed lightweights peopling the West now.
Now get the fuck off of my lawn.

Tim in Vt: Saw the Milius doc last year. Even though he is directly connected to and is looked up to by Lucas, Coppola and Spielberg, he has been blacklisted of sorts since Red Dawn.

You don't mention the HBO mini-series Rome that Milius created
HBO-Rome

If you haven't seen this, you must. The writing, the sets and the acting are all top notch. My favorite Irish actor, Ciarán Hinds, plays Julius Caesar in the first series. His Caesar is at the same authentic level as Bruno Ganz' Adolf.

I can't stand those YouTube links which, once you do link to them, they're a stringing thingie of songs. I mean, they disrupt the whole point of linking. I am writing this only to explain my just previous deletion. ^

Now, I could go back and find a better, more "sticky" link but at the moment I don't want to bother.

Hey! I just found a great, even better cure for an ear worm that doesn't involve playing the song!

See how he does in Manitowoc, or Kenosha, or the Fox Valley and I'll be impressed. A big turnout for the leftist lefty in Congress at Madison is not impressive.

Link to local paper for Sanders rally. Filled the Coliseum -- I vaguely recall that Hockey sellouts there were in the 8800 range, so 10K people is a pretty good estimate.

Zingiber, you edge the east of history
In the cornucopia of your root,
Navigating empire, traversing spice route,
Gaining universal appeal – this story
Is your real horn of plenty: medieval
Belief would see the source of your descent
Exalted in Edenic exodus, sent,
Reprieved and rescued far east of evil.

Zinnia, you edge the west of mystery….
In the asterix of your desert bloom
New worlds of color set their suns in starry
Nativity. Cortez among las mariposas.
In God’s garden plot he saw Adam
And Joseph naming the new genesis.
