Taranto explains the pairings:
One such couple consists of George W. Bush's nominees and one of Barack Obama's, but Toobin mixes up the Reagan and Clinton justices, so that Antonin Scalia is paired with Ruth Bader Ginsburg ("the two oldest Justices," both of whom lived in New York as youngsters) and Anthony Kennedy with Stephen Breyer (who "both sit in similar ways," have bald heads, and were born in Northern California). You'd think a good liberal would be more circumspect about sharing his perception that the one black person does not belong coupled up with any of the others.
Why not pair Scalia and Samuel Alito, a fellow Italian-American native of Trenton, N.J.? Or Scalia and Kennedy, the only sitting justices to be confirmed unanimously? Or Thomas and Sonia Sotomayor, both Yale Law School graduates with minority ethnic backgrounds, and the only justices to have been divorced?
That last hypothetical question holds the answer to them all. Pairing Justice Thomas with any of his colleagues would defeat the purpose of the exercise, which is to end up with him as the odd man out.

What's a good liberal?
I thought Scalia & sleepy were best buds? I thought they spent New Years together.
Toobin demands that the Black man do something and entertain him, the Privileged White Ivy League Journolist. Do I have that right?
He don't like the strong (Black) silent type!
Toobin not so smart. Thomas deserves to be criticized for his opinions and conflicts of interest, not that he doesn't ask questions.
Toobin was merely trying to avoid any panic in the streets resulting from the specter of miscegenation.
Toobin definitely has a woody for Thomas. Curious that he doesn't understand how he appears to others.
Hey this is fun:
Nine guys walk into a bar. Eight order & the ninth remains silent. Toobin the bartender gives him the bill.
Nine bears sit down to eat. Eight say "Who's been eating my porridge?" The ninth says nothing. Toobin says: #9 is Guilty despite Miranda & the Fifth Amendment.
Nine of the NYYankee fielders sit at a table. Eight of them babble on, The ninth, Dereck Jeter, says nothing. Toobin says: No Hall of Fame for Derek.

Short Answer: Cliff
You'd think a good liberal would be more circumspect about sharing his perception that the one black person does not belong coupled up with any of the others.
Naw. Not anymore. The elitists are out now, beyond irony. None have to pretend anymore, to be civil, moral, or honest, or humane.
Remember the House.of.Cards.
"You'd think a good liberal would be more circumspect about sharing his perception that the one black person does not belong coupled up with any of the others."
Why? A "good" conservative wouldn't.
The idea that whites, left or right, are adequately policing the color line is delusional. Whites do what they want and dare others to catch them, or lord it over us. As jr565 so eloquently put it:
Accept the hand you were dealt.
Won't somebody simply cut crack a check already?
You'd think a good liberal would be more circumspect about sharing his perception that the one black person does not belong coupled up with any of the others.
Dog
Whistle
You know what they say: If someone's blowing a whistle that only you can hear......you're the dog.
Is "good liberal" something like "postal service"?
All these "Whistles" that only liberals can hear.
Hmmmmmm
"military intelligence"?
It's very simple. If Clarence Thomas was a "liberal" leaning justice, joining on more politically controversial opinions with Breyer and Ginsburg rather than Scalia and Alito, Toobin would instead be gushing about how Thomas "speaks softly and carries a big gavel" or "doesn't need to show off during oral argument, but rather works behind the scenes and lets his genius show through his writing."
Hack, thy name is Toobin!

This resembles the standard leftist statements of those trying to be subtle in their identity group enforcement. To distinguish yourself from them why don't you tell us which opinions he deserves criticism for?
Brando nailed it.
you're telling me that "a good liberal" is a hypocrite? I'm shocked...shocked I tell you
well said Brando
I like Taranto's writing:
"What is it about Thomas that leads Toobin to believe that he, apparently alone among the justices, has a duty to be submissive? Or perhaps we should ask: What is it about Toobin?"
Looks like Othering from Toobin; I wonder if anyone finds it "pretty ugly."
"Won't somebody simply cut crack a check already?"
Do you really think that would satisfy him?
We could give everyone who asked a million dollars and it wouldn't change a thing, except we'd be deeper in debt.
You'd think a good liberal would be more circumspect...
This is what good liberals do. This is who they are.
Toobin is simply trying to be down with the Bruthahs.
To be fair to Toobin, he's not an outlier with the whole latent...bigotry thang.
Clarence is an intelligent Christian man from Georgia ruling in the midst of his enemies. He irritates the NYC elites by his existence.
I don't want to engage in the "Who's a Racist?" game even for the sake of lampooning the NY Times.
Althouse, for God's sake, this is the nth billionth rendering of the game.
Find something else to occupy your time.
Toobin wants desperately to say the n word. You can almost feel it with all his code words and whatnot.
It's starting to look like Toobin has some sort of hidden attraction to the Strong and Silent Manly Black Man type.

There will never be enough. Even when he gets it. It will never be enough.
Toob's a raaaaacist! (Like that's a surprise.)
Their concept of diversity requires that they oppose interracial marriages and other convergent processes.
There's always an audience to keep in mind, and for me here I'm imagining a Left liberal upper West sider type who might think Greenhouse and Totenberg dish out the straight dope on the Supremes.
Is there enough reasoning and legal analysis in the piece or are we Toobin' down a lazy river of generally anti-Thomas, anti-conservative popular sentiment?
Maybe we're all a little too sensitive about race? I think Thomas has gotten over his bitterness, how he was treated when he got out of Yale, etc. Maybe he's just tired of always being seen as the Black Supreme Justice?
Speaking at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Fla., Thomas, the second black justice to serve on the court, lamented what he considers a society that is more “conscious” of racial differences than it was when he grew up in segregated Georgia in the days before — and during — the civil rights era.
“My sadness is that we are probably today more race and difference-conscious than I was in the 1960s when I went to school. To my knowledge, I was the first black kid in Savannah, Georgia, to go to a white school. Rarely did the issue of race come up,” Thomas said during a chapel service hosted by the nondenominational Christian university. “Now, name a day it doesn’t come up. Differences in race, differences in sex, somebody doesn’t look at you right, somebody says something. Everybody is sensitive. If I had been as sensitive as that in the 1960s, I’d still be in Savannah. Every person in this room has endured a slight. Every person. Somebody has said something that has hurt their feelings or did something to them — left them out.
“That’s a part of the deal,” he added.

Toobin should be wary of coupling. Coupling has gotten him in quite a bit of trouble.
Back in the '60's, my decent white conservative Southern friends thought they were being polite when they referred to an accomplished black man as "a colored gentleman", but they found out pretty quickly that this was not acceptable.
Nowadays, conservatives bend over backwards to welcome blacks into their groups. Although there may be a little lurking prejudice deep down in the psyches of the older generation of conservatives, the appeal of having a Clarence Thomas or Herman Cain or Ward Connerly on our team totally overcomes that. If you are black and want to feel welcome, go to a Tea Party group and talk the talk.
But liberals -- some of them, the politicians and the talking heads, not the regular folks -- seem to care about minorities only as interest groups/voting blocs, and because they are sure that they have the best interests of the minorities at heart, they frequently let the mask slip and their underlying lack of respect shows. That's Toobin.
"I think Thomas has gotten over his bitterness, how he was treated when he got out of Yale, etc. "
He's on the Supreme Court and they are not.
I seriously doubt we know his private thoughts and deepest feelings.
Can any of these conservative writers have just a teensy weeny piece of physical attractiveness.
There all the same: white, old, pasty, doughy, multiple chins, hideous hair and clothes, and totally non-sexual.
This is written in stone in the By-laws of Being Liberal-- once you become a conservative you stop being black. Ask Justice Thomas, Dr. Carson, Thomas Sowell, Tim Scott, Larry Elder, et al. It is anathema to suggest that some blacks are conservative, therefore blackness ends where conservatism begins.
Welcome to another episode of WHAT'S WRONG WITH CONSERVATIVES?
I'm your host, The Crack Emcee, and today we have three examples of clueless conservatives letting their own twisted outlook interfere with the well-being of the other Americans they also profess to care about, and thinking that'll win them black votes come the election.
First up is a regular contestant, Drago The bore, implying either slavery was O.K., or blacks who exist without resources are funny, or maybe blogging doesn't require money - I don't know:
"Won't somebody simply cut crack a check already?"
Next up is a new player, eric, who've I've never heard of before. Of course, the first sign of an asshole conservative is the blind attack on a black person (I guess my music was up too loud) and the all-important conservative speculation based on their own screwy outlook on life:
"Do you really think that would satisfy him?
We could give everyone who asked a million dollars and it wouldn't change a thing, except we'd be deeper in debt."
And finally, there's Rusty, who - it must be said - is showing some of that "Independent Spirit" I keep hearing so much about by mouthing eric's thoughts back at him. (For the record, I've heard this particular speech - about what my actions would be if someone were actually nice to me - about a billion times now. Totally uniform. Like telling poor people they're "playing the victim", you guys spout more mantras than yogis. Not a one thinks for him or herself.) Anyway - even though we've heard not before - get your 15 minutes, Rusty:
"There will never be enough. Even when he gets it. It will never be enough."
So, now that we've heard all three ignoramuses, it's time to ask:
WHAT'S WRONG WITH CONSERVATIVES?
They don't understand America.
R. Chatt,
In order to accept Thomas' words on face value you HAVE to shut your critical faculties:
Speaking at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Fla., Thomas, the second black justice to serve on the court, lamented what he considers a society that is more “conscious” of racial differences than it was when he grew up in segregated Georgia in the days before — and during — the civil rights era.
“My sadness is that we are probably today more race and difference-conscious than I was in the 1960s when I went to school. To my knowledge, I was the first black kid in Savannah, Georgia, to go to a white school. Rarely did the issue of race come up.”
Of course it didn't come up - it was Savannah, Georgia - the point was for blacks to keep their heads down. To it's credit, Savannah wasn't a lynching state, but Jim Crow did dance and Thomas is being duplicitous to claim race wasn't the center of black lives because he wouldn't have been able to walk to school without getting off the sidewalk for a white man or woman. He had to drink at separate water fountains.
Claiming no one talked about it is bullshit. Maybe, just like now, Thomas didn't have any blacks around him to hear talking about it.
I'm not alone in saying this:
How a man as educated and supposedly aware as Thomas can make such an absurd statement is beyond me.
We remember some of those incidents; the burning of the Freedom Riders bus in Anniston Alabama, the baring of James Meredith from the University of Mississippi, the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing in which four little girls going to Sunday School were murdered, the brutal attacks on protestors in that same city that sent Dr Martin Luther King to jail, the murder of Medgar Evers, the murder of the Mississippi Civil Rights Workers, Bloody Sunday on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma Alabama, and the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. We know about those, well at least some of us do. They all occurred in my lifetime and certainly if Thomas didn’t know about them as a child he either chooses to ignore them now.
Whites like these fairy stories, but blacks see them as identifiers of black betrayal,...
The Godfather,
"If you are black and want to feel welcome, go to a Tea Party group and talk the talk."
Please. I've been to more than my share and they're as chickenshit in person as the people here are. Always talking about what they want to do but never having thew will to do anything - and scared off every time the topic gets real.
You guys like the few blacks who'll leave the other 99% hanging. That's what turned me - the demand I leave blacks over Trayvon. Not going to happen. Instead, gun-toting whites disgusted me and I don't know when it'll end because it definitely poisoned the well.
Any black that tells you the truth, you'll shoot the messenger - that's the truth. That's why you like and support the ones who don't say shit or who spend their time bringing blacks down - in your eyes only. For instance:
Only Herman Cain could go see The Butler and come out as the only black man finding an anti-Obama message in it.
Listen to Drago and the rest - starve The Crack Emcee. Don't give him money, don't visit his blog, don't read his posts, nothing. Why? Total fucking hysteria. What are they afraid of, with only one black guy here?
They can claim not to be racists all day long, but the results of their work - on themselves as well as me (I'm still black) - will always come out the same as if they were.
Who said Thomas Sowell's not black?
Larry Elders and the rest are sell-outs, but who said Thomas Sowell's not black?
Crack, it's pretty amazing how they have convinced themselves they aren't racists yet their posts drip of judgement and disdain for anyone of color who doesn't bow down before the whote establishment. I'm particular distubed by Michael K's statements, as i thought better of him but it turns out he has some very disturbing and hateful views of black culture.
"Always talking about what they want to do but never having thew will to do anything - and scared off every time the topic gets real."
Why not find an alternate method of addressing everyone you meet if you fail to influence them or become their friend? And what do you want them to do? What do you do that they don't in order to advance your (our) common goals?
It seems there is an opportunity for you to become a leader in the Tea Party if you choose to lead the rag-tag motley crew that is your local Tea Party instead of point our their flaws in a caustic manner.
@Crack MC (8:57 pm): You don't imagine you refuted, or even responded to, what I said, do you?
crack: "Listen to Drago and the rest - starve The Crack Emcee. Don't give him money, don't visit his blog, don't read his posts, nothing"
LOL
"starve"
Hilarious.
Never said a single one of those things.
But that doesn't matter.
Some whitey did and since we all look alike, crack can't tell us apart.
I especially love how cliff has let his concern troll mask completely slip off!
You can just picture a little white cliffy jumping up and down behind crack saying "me too!!!"
Inga is precious as well.
Inga of the "War on Women" armband "loves the new crack".
You know what part of the new crack she loves the best?
The part where New Crack calls conservative women commentators "cunt".
She really loves that part.
Cliff: "Crack, it's pretty amazing how they have convinced themselves they aren't racists..."
Cliff,are you a racist?
If no, what evidence do you have for that?
LOL
Crack: " Don't give him money.."
I specifically requested (nay, begged) for someone to cut you a check already.
Specifically.
Requested.
When you are insane, it's easy to miss things like that.
"disdain for anyone of color who doesn't bow down before the whote establishment"
Your lot is The Establisment,Cliff. And you're absolutely right.
Cliff: "..for anyone of color who doesn't bow down before the whote establishment.."
Heads up Cliff/Crack, the left is the establishment now.
In the Federal Government, in academia, in Popular culture.
So, which "establishment" are you talking about white boy?
