Interesting note from Gallup:

Republicans are prouder to be American than Democrats.

Considering what we've been told the last 5 years, doesn't that make Democrats racist?

It's raining here.

Buckets and buckets and buckets.

Did you know that you must level a spot in the yard for large play pools? You probably did. My husband was not interested in spending his vacation doing this, so we paid someone to do it. That guy didn't get it level. Bah! , I have been out with a tiller, pick axe, and rake fixing it. Secretly I am glad the guy didn't do it right as this is exactly the sort of thing I love to do. Plus, the guy did get up the layer of sod, which is great, because that's exactly the sort of thing I hate to do.

We booked a stay in Highlands, NC where the 4000 ft elevation keeps July4 cooler than the beach, hoping for 82 instead of 92

But the global cooling has the jet streaming arctic air back in the Smokies, and solid overcast and a 72F high is the result. We still have white water rafting trip booked rain or shine, but it will be cool as November weather.

Where's here (generally speaking)?

We've gotten some rain every day for a week, not always in the daytime, however.

PS something to consider on this day, even your snail mail is a candidate for metadata.

When I was looking at Nina's pictures from Slovenia the other day, one thought I had about the Military Museum was that the lesson of Europe is that nothing is ever settled permanently. The borders change, people go from one allegiance to another and then back to the previous one when the borders change again.

Perhaps the reason that we feel that there is such a thing as American exceptionalism is the fact that from the beginning of our nation's history, we have never, ever lost any of our national territory. Our history has been one of continuous expansion to our current borders. Sure, we had to compromise a couple of times with the British about the location of our northern border, but the people who ended up on the other side of it were never our countrymen. There is no irredentist group of Americans outside of our borders. Because of this, our national history is significantly different from just about every other nation on earth, other than perhaps Australia and New Zealand.

It is an absolutely perfect day here in L.A.. I'm standing in line at a carneceria (Mexican butcher shop) in a line of about 35 people all waiting for the same thing - pounds and pounds of the best carne asada in town. Carne asada rules the city on the 4th of July. Viva America! Hey, I'm the only white guy here. I guess some might be "white hispanics."

They have a dozen men cutting and marinating meat as fast as they can. Many bulls will be adopted out of here today.

I'm genuinely curious about this Obamacare delay. Not that anyone actually understand a single word of that 2800-page disaster, but isn't actually real law? So how can the exec branch do shit about it? Wouldn't altering it require a vote of both houses? What am I missing?

Normally where I live in California (SF Bay area) July 4th might be warmish but by nighttime, you need blankets and sweatshirts if you want to view the fireworks comfortably.

Not today. It is almost 100 here, as it has been all week and much of last week. Our air conditioner has been running even at night because it has not cooled off at night at all. I fear seeing my next PG&E bill.

Marc in Eugene म्हणाले...

Here in Eugene, the four or five days of mid-90s heat ended yesterday (as it had north in Portland, too, so I hear), so SF may have some relief soon.

अनामित म्हणाले...

In SF we get two or three hot days, then the fog comes in.

Not quite like clockwork but close.

TML: I wonder too. I'm plenty cynical about Obama but it hadn't occurred to me that he could just waive O'Care for the entire country until the 2014 election is safely behind him.

As someone here remarked, Democrats better not be surprised if a Republican president in 2016 waives ObamaCare until 2020.

It seems to me this liberal "we only enforce laws if we like them" approach is setting terrible precedents.

The Lefties have had this mindset for 50 years.

Way back when, the big Lefty rap was that one had an obligation to disobey "unjust" laws (ie, laws they didn't like).

Some of that originated in the civil rights movement, but it really got rolling during 'Nam.

A number of people saw it for what it was and what it would become.

The Rock ’n’ Roll Casualty Who Became a War Hero

Dude got kicked out of Nirvana AND Soundgarden not long before each hit it big, eventually ended up in Army Special Forces, and recently completed an undergraduate degree in philosophy from Columbia, which he got into in part because of a letter of recommendation from General Stanley McChrystal.

Icepick म्हणाले...

I mean, that's really a cool life story.

edutcher: To be sure, civil disobedience and all that, but I don't remember seeing Democrats or Republicans for that matter behave so flagrantly at the top levels of government.
