What do you think of Garrett Epps saying Justice Alito "looked for all the world like Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High..."

"... signaling to the homies his contempt for Ray Walston as the bothersome history teacher, Mr. Hand"? Commenters at "Did Justice Alito roll his eyes while Justice Ginsburg was speaking?" let Epps have it. Does he even know the movie? Amartel said:
If Alito had ordered a pizza to be delivered to the well at the Supreme Court, or called Ginsburg a "dick" that would be, like, a totally different story.
Likewise, Youngblood says:
Spicoli doesn't act like that in the film. Now, if Justice Alito said to Justice Ginsburg, "You DICK!" or ordered a pizza in the middle of class, that would be a different story. But little niggling gestures of disrespect aren't really Spicoli-like at all.
And CatherineM:
What I find most offensive is the Spicoli reference. Has Epps ever watched Fast Times? Jeff called Hand a dick once for ripping up his excuse, but he never mocked Mr. Hand. He was incapable. He was too high.

That's his tell. Epps is lying. I object.

To sum up, here's Henry:
Jeff Spicoli is a hero. When did liberals go all in on being turgid squares?
I don't know, man, but the Supreme Court is about to close up for the summer, and maybe all Sam Alito needs are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and he'll be fine.  When it's October, and the Justices are back for oral arguments, maybe he will order that pizza....

We all know Milbank and Epps are hacks, but come on now, enough is enough. I've been patiently awaiting analysis on the Baby Veronica case all day.

Probably his favorite all-time movie.

Speaks truth to power and all that stuff.

Why not compare it to Albert Gore's award-winning debate performance against Dubya?

Oh, yeah, the Lefty looks like a jerk.

If Spicoli can so thoroughly understand that founding document, I'm sure the Constitution would no problem.

Prejudice against Italians is one of the few the liberal elite may still express - the more so since the Catholic Church has been hit with the sodomy scandals. It's both an ethnic and a class prejudice. It hasn't been that many years since one could hear a partner in a big name Democratic NY law firm tell another "it will be over my dead body that we have a partner whose last name ends in a vowel".

Which is odd, because the "liberal elite" were pretty much the ONLY people I heard whining about how "The Sopranos" was supposedly demeaning to Italian-Americans.

"Justice Ginsburg, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. We should ignore everything you ever say, and may God have mercy on your soul."

He's a full on Monet. (To quote from another classic high school movie.) He's okay from far away but up close he's a big ole mess.

This dude is obviously gay since he is talking about Spicoli instead of the best scene in the movie.

So who cares what he thinks?

Icepick म्हणाले...

When I read Althouse's earlier post I wondered what the Hell Epps was talking about. The kind of behavior he describes is practically anti-Spicoli. Spicoli is a "THAT WAS MY SKULL!" kind of guy, not an eye-roller. That's the kind of thing that Linda Barrett (Phoebe Cates) might do, but not Spicoli.

I think Mr. Garrett should leave the pop culture references to people that know what the Hell they're talking about.

Icepick म्हणाले...

Using incorrect movie references is like in Titanic when Jack says "Nobody puts Baby in a corner."

LOL

Baron Zemo म्हणाले...

I mean when you talk about Fast Times there is really only one scene that you can talk about. Seriously dude.

Amartel म्हणाले...

Alito is not Spicoli and Ginsburg is no Mr. Hand. Mr. Hand is NOT a "bothersome history teacher." Mr. Hand lets Spicoli "squeak by" but not before imparting some knowledge and scaring the shit out of him such that Spicoli promises not to come to his side of the building next year. Mr. Hand is the one who always rolls his eyes.

Baron Zemo म्हणाले...

I mean when you talk about Fast Times there is really only one scene that you can talk about. Seriously dude.

Now that's just untrue. The whole movie is brilliant. It's just that you have to start with that scene. And, uh, end with it, too....

Icepick म्हणाले...

Mr. Hand is the one who always rolls his eyes.

Mr. Hand is obviously a war vet bad ass who is restraining himself from killing half his students. I remember those guys well. Sorry Mr. Trombli for being a Spicoli, and thank you for not killing me and my friends!

The Baby Veronica decision was amazing mostly because again it went 5-4. Was the law really written that poorly/ambiguously that 4 thinking black robes could interpret 3/256 Amerindian trumping 253/256 non-Amerindian?

This is why my wife and I never adopted. We never felt certain that our child might not be ripped from our arms. I thought those days from the early nineties were over. Apparently not.

Amartel म्हणाले...

"Mr. Hand is obviously a war vet bad ass who is restraining himself from killing half his students. I remember those guys well. Sorry Mr. Trombli for being a Spicoli, and thank you for not killing me and my friends!"

Everybody in our generation was taught by at least one of these priceless guys - and they did have every reason to roll their eyes. Which reminds me of yet another classic high school movie, Dazed and Confused. "Men! 50 of you are leaving on a mission. 25 of you ain't coming back."

The Scythian म्हणाले...

Oh, I've been quoted! Neat.

And, yeah, Epps misses the whole dynamic between Mr. Hand and Spicoli. With the exception of the pizza stunt, which backfires spectacularly, Spicoli isn't intentionally disrespectful. He's just a screw up. He doesn't know any better because, as Hand points out, indirectly, nobody has expected more from Spicoli or his peers. Eye-rolling isn't his thing, though.

Republicans must sit quietly while their betters instruct so they don't miss any teachable moments. Democrats are allowed to be the OCD/ADHD/behavioral problem kids in the class making a nuisance of themselves and damaging property.

As in most things these days, when Democrats criticize Republicans, they fail to appreciate the irony that they are really only criticizing their own behavior. Republicans just scratch their heads thinking, "what planet are these people from?"

Epps and Milbank are Spicoli.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Is it just me, or was Spicoli the peak of Sean Penn's career?

Chip Ahoy म्हणाले...

The thing about Mr Hand that Spicoli was apparently aware of is when nobody was looking antenna would rise out of Mr Hand's head accompanied with eerie music and Mr Hand could then activate preternatural abilities, levitate objects with his finger, become invisible, read other people's minds, communicate with animals, freeze people, speed them up, and many other manipulative marvels that gave Mr Hand an edge over the teenagers and got Mr Hand through the day at Ridgemont High.
