Overall, Manhattan's population has swelled by 5% to 1.6 million since 2000, and educated whites appear to account for the influx...According to the article, Manhattan is becoming, more and more, a place where educated white people pay a lot so they can work a lot: "This is type-A culture... It's a work-oriented, achievement-oriented island. Because of that they want to be near their offices, it's a huge benefit to productivity."
The white population rose by an estimated 11% to around 928,000 in the past decade...
At the same time, the number of blacks dropped by 6% to less than 250,000...
Between 2000 and 2010, whites went from 2% of Harlem's population to 9.8%. The black population shrank from 61.2% to 54.4% in the same period...

"Manhattan, the world's most famous melting pot, is losing its rich ethnic and racial diversity."

In the 90s it was terrific fun being a 15 minute subway ride from my office. And the city was vibrant.
Not only is it now ridiculously expensive, but the used bookstores, hole-in-the-wall music spaces etc. have all disappeared. So it makes sense that people live there just to work.
Racists!!
Plus, I suspect they are counting Hispanics as white. Unfair.
merry christmas.
i have lived in nyc for 30+ years.
the racial diversity is declining.
it is mostly asian and hispanic now - bu a huge margin
it will cease to be a euro-ameroican city in the next decade.
it's become a 3rd world city with an ultra rich wall street bit and a ultra-leftist pseudo-artsy & media bit.
it sux.
I noticed this trend when I watch Law& order episodes. It is very rare to see a minority vicim or a minority perp. I blamed that on the show's producers and writers who must be racist I thought. I now apologize to them.
You're also seeing gentrification of the in-close sections of the outer boroughs, like Williamsburgh and Long Island City, along with Jersey City, because they're still only a few subway stops away from Midtown or Downtown, even if the river separation causes them to lose the cachet of actually living in Manhattan.
Does "vibrant" = higher crime or crappier conditions?
Can't do it right now, but before the kids came along I was hoping Manhattan would become more "vibrant" under Bloomberg so I could afford living there again.
I got crowded out by NYU trust fund babies. So I moved to Queens, which was still "vibrant".
And then we moved to Westchester. It's "vibrant" out here in a different way: everyone in the family [excepting me] has had Lyme disease twice and all 5 of us have had a complete series of rabies shots. Woo!
When I was a young man some 40+ years ago the complaints were all about how selfish whites were leaving the urban areas. Now as they return the migration is labelled as the equally selfish "gentrification."
As an antidote to all this politicised nonsense, enjoy this account of a Russian church in New York.
I think the population has swollen, rather than swelled.
When did Harlem became a predominantly black neighborhood? There used to be parts of Harlem that were largely Jewish, Italian, etc.
Councidently, it was also during this period that Manhattan became one of the most boring places on earth.
What percent of the population is hipster-american?
losing its rich ethnic and racial diversity
White people are bad.
Overall, Manhattan's population has swelled by 5% to 1.6 million since 2000,
WOW! That swelling is sliglty MORE than HALF the rate of the overall US population growth! (9.7% in ten years).
While diversity has slumped, the borough's brain power has spiked:
That's a surprisingly un-PC statement, coming from a newspaper.

Palladian, you are such a pretentious, useless bastard!
No wonder you like to pretend that being gay is the same as being a nigger under Jim Crow. A gay drama queen! What a surprise!
I moved into Ft. Greene Park in Brooklyn in the mid-70s, and the same stupid articles appeared in the Times. Whites are ruining the neighborhood.
NYC is still an amazing, wonderful city. I've lived in Chicago and San Francisco. Despite the horrible winters, you couldn't drag me away from NYC.
My little walk from the subway on Christopher and Hudson to my office in Greenwich Village still thrills me, after all these years.
Palladian, would you like for me to find some bad boys to beat you up so that you can live out your dreams of hip martyrdom?
Palladian,
Forgive the consecutive posts, but I have a question:
What percentage of the population of NYC should be Negroes in order for you to be properly entertained?
vw: gosinkin. Yes, indeed.
Sounds like Gotham may be going back to the 50s (if not farther back than that - maybe the Roe effect is kicking in sooner than expected). Usually, gentrification is associated with chi-chi Lefties (as was the case in Philadelphia 20 - 30 years ago), but these people, listening to Palladian, sound a bit more like Conservatives. If so, Bloomie better get a job with the Feds because the people moving in may start expecting a little more back on their investment.
WV "palce" How I usually type the word for a geographic location when I'm in a hurry.
Bangalore has "swelled" by 50% over the past 10 years.
There is no where to put the shit anymore.

Shoutingthomas, you've hit the Progressive nail squarely on the head!
This is an expression of lefty self-hatred aimed at the Midwest and suburbs in general. The I-hate -my-father, blame America first left wants wonders "what's the Matter WIth Kansas. The real question is why they want Kansas votes but wail with contempt when real Kansan appear in their midst. And they get angry when they are interpreted as un-American.
Ain't nuthin' the matter with Kansas!
I live in the specific county about which the book was written, and its premise would be amusing if not so predictably preposterous -- that in voting Republican out of fear we are voting against our own best interests.
That's true, if and only if our interests are best served by a large, growing, and ever-more-powerful central government maintained in power by perpetuating identity-based interest groups and subsequently demagoguing them into voting Democrat.
The gentrification issue causes anxiety for the left because it might undermine their identity-based power structure. In the coastal cities they have little to fear, since gentry liberals are quite reliable Democrats.
The essence of What's the Matter with Kansas is that we need Big Government to protect us against Big Business.
In reality, however, Big Business cannot hurt me: it cannot tax me, regulate me, seize my goods and property, or send heavily armed me to deprive me of liberty.
Only through privileged access to Big Government can Big Business find a willing proxy to to damage my interests and coerce my behavior.
Eliminate Big Government and Big Business becomes powerless. The the specific ethnic composition of urban neighborhoods will no longer matter.
Sounds like a good deal all around, but I doubt Democrat power brokers will slither willingly to their deserved oblivion.
Nevertheless their attempts to convince us Kansans we are an identity-victim group incapable of success without their assistance has proven to be laughably presumptuous.
Maybe Sanger is finally having the impact she wanted to have.
Big Government likes Big Business likes Big Unions likes Big Government.
Small businesses are unruly and disorderly and it is an infernal nuisance to be forever running around to prevent them from trying to change something or other!
New York is a place where, like Portland, Oregon, rich white Democrat racists can go live where it's too expensive for black people to intrude on their lives.
Progressive.
Space is at a premium, but who needs a kitchen with all these cheap ethnic restaurants with free delivery. And who needs a back yard when you have Central Park? The most arduous part of the worker's day is frequently the commute to work. This is minimized by living in Manhattan.....Not all white people are alike. There seems to be quite a lot of diversity among the white people I know. Also there's a lot more diversity among the diverse. People come from WTF places like Ethiopia and Albania.....Over the years, life in NY has gotten much better. I haven't been burglarized in over twenty years. The only downside is the unfortunate imbalance between single men and women in the city. It is difficult to have a quiet moment alone with your thoughts without some needy woman pestering you.
"New York is a place where, like Portland, Oregon, rich white Democrat racists can go live where it's too expensive for black people to intrude on their lives."
Exactly. There's nothing more boring than rich liberals. Which is one of the reasons that Manhattan is so fucking boring.
Of course, the "ethnic" people still have to commute into Manhattan from further and further away to serve all the rich white liberals. That's the price you have to pay to live the late-empire Imperial City, I suppose.
I remember when columnists like Jimmy Breslin complained about whites "fleeing," the city. First with the GI bill giving people an opportunity for a house and then the crime and dirt of the late 60s and 70s. The 70s with the walls of garbage garbage and the schools went down the shitter too. Good times.
You gotta laugh. Now it's getting "too white."
NYC is amazingingly exciting and cool; it's just become more exclusively so. The elite, and I mean that with respectful admiration for their accomplishments - the are far from elitist, have learned how to keep the dirtbags at bay because they BEHAVE like dirtbags.
As for being whiter, I think that's a consequence of it being more of a meritocracy rather than a welfare state; I write this statistically, not racially, obviously there being merit deserving citizens of every ethnicity; disproportionately the high-achievers, however, are white.
The 60s and 70s and 80s of living on welfare in a rent controlled or public housing apartment while you do smack and have bastards is over. You have to make it there to make it there, more and more.
Some might find this racist; it is not ... it's empirical.
"As for being whiter, I think that's a consequence of it being more of a meritocracy rather than a welfare state"
Haha! Yes, the enormous, obscene wealth generated in New York is entirely, 100% awarded on the basis of merit. Wealth is purely a product of virtue, of course!
"Some might find this racist; it is not ... it's empirical."
Lol. Better bone up on that scientific definition of "empirical".
What's that I hear?
Oh, it's a world's smallest violin.
