Althouse has a cold.

Althouse is snowed in and suffering from cabin fever.

The snow is beautiful this morning. More on Sunday. Time for cocoa.

The drive in, this morning (too far to walk, yet too close for it to be an excuse), was not too bad. We've got an (small) 4wd and left before the usual crowd. I agree, it was beautiful, though my husband, out with the snowblower (we live on a corner lot, so it helps) at 5:30, has a different opinion.

Just watched the panda video - that's how my husband sneezes.

Oh. That explains a lot...

We have a very long driveway, and a snowblower is a must. I'm not trying to drive on my street -- which probably won't be plowed 'til tonight -- 'til late this afternoon when I HAVE to be somewhere. I hope other cars will have made ruts to drive in by then.

This week we have had light fluffy snow in Minnesota, thanks to low temps and almost no wind when the snow was falling.

My kid hates it when the snow is too cold to make snowballs.

To give those of you in warmer climes another way to understand it, I saw someone using a leafblower to clear a sidewalk.

To build a house without a garage seldom makes sense.

Even less sense to have a house with a garage but not install an automatic door opener.

Even less sense than that to have both those things but fill the garage to the rafters with tools and miscellany precluding a properly parked car.

I have survived these senseless conditions.

I've been living garageless in upstate New York for four years and it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Just a few winter mornings of having to dig out. Tomorrow morning should be fun. About a foot and a half of fun. :^0

There is the "car port" alternative to a garage. Not ideal, but (unless there's a lot of wind) it keeps most snow off.

Panda Sneeze is one of my favorite useless YouTube videos of all time.

I'm less a fan of the more staged videos.

Nevertheless, I like Weezer's tongue-in-cheek homage to YouTube "stars," Pork and Beans, with the participation of some of the most popular (and notable band stand-ins).

How many do you recognize? I wasn't aware of most of them until I saw this video.

Attached garages mean that exhaust from the car can seep in through the house. Probably not a major concern for some, but neither is weather in some climes.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

I live in an old neighborhood where houses were built without garages. As a result, the neighborhood looks especially pretty from the street. Some houses have dug out garages from basements or detached garages. I'm used to it. Occasionally, there's some brushing off of snow to be done or, worse, ice scraping.

While I have chosen to live in a snowless clime (SW FL), I've been there and done that in MA and MI.

The worst, though, is actually DC. Rather than lots of snow, it often gets lots of ice... 3"-4" of it sometimes. That is no fun to get off sidewalks or vehicle, wreaks utter havoc on rain gutters, and down limbs and power lines.

It'd be best to just leave the crud out there to melt, but liability exists if someone falls on your ice over 12 hours after it's stopped falling from the sky.

Of course, the city has immunity from liability if it can't get the ice off the streets, but that's why it's always better to be a government than an individual: You get to make up your own rules.
