"Say you wake up in a hotel room in Wichita and look out the window. A little girl is walking along the train tracks dragging a big statue of Buddha in a wooden wagon..."

"... with a three-legged dog following behind. Do you reach for your guitar or your drawing pad?"

Bill Flanagan asked Bob Dylan, in 2009.

Dylan answered: "Oh wow. It would depend on a lot of things. The environment mostly; like what kind of day is it. Is it a cloudless blue-gray sky or does it look like rain? A little girl dragging a wagon with a statue in it? I’d probably put that in last. The three-legged dog – what type? A spaniel, a bulldog, a retriever? That would make a difference. I’d have to think about that. Depends what angle I’m seeing it all from. Second floor, third floor, eighth floor. I don’t know. Maybe I’d want to go down there. The train tracks too. I’d have to find a way to connect it all up. I guess I would be thinking about if this was an omen or a harbinger of something."

The reason I'm reading that this morning is I just searched bobdylan.com to see if Bob had ever used the word "wow." And that interview was the only thing. You know, "wow" is a pretty interesting word. It's one of those sounds people made, in amazement or surprise, that caught on and came to be regarded as words, things like "oh" and "ooh" and "ah."

"Wow" got started in Scotland. Robert Burns wrote:
If in your bounds ye chance to light
Upon a fine, fat fodgel wight,
O’ stature short, but genius bright,
That’s he, mark weel;
And wow! he has an unco sleight
O’ cauk and keel.
He's saying "wow" about a man's use of drawing materials: "cauk and keel" means white chalk and red chalk. That's interesting because not only did Bob Dylan say "wow" in the context of drawing, Robert Burns was his greatest influence... or so he said when asked, in 2009, to cite one particular lyric. It wasn't that bit about "cauk and keel" though. It was:
O my Luve is like a red, red rose
   That’s newly sprung in June;
O my Luve is like the melody
   That’s sweetly played in tune.
But what was with this interest in "wow" all of sudden?, you might wonder. It all started with Meade asking me how to spell "wowie." Or is it "wowee"? He was writing something. There's a story behind that, but the "wowie" story for me this morning begins with his question.

I saw that the OED had an entry with the spelling "wowee" It traced it to 1963, to a Mad Magazine line that has a different spelling: "Boy! Wow-wee! That’s quite an exciting evening line-up!" I had a pop culture references that supported my spelling: "Wowie Zowie" — the Mothers of Invention song from the "Freak Out" album.

But then there's this from  Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Free No. 10":
Well, I don’t know, but I’ve been told
The streets in heaven are lined with gold
I ask you how things could get much worse
If the Russians happen to get up there first
Wowee! pretty scary!

That supports Meade's spelling, and I like that better and not just because it's Bob's. Note that Bob also writes, in that same song:

Now they asked me to read a poem
At the sorority sisters’ home
I got knocked down and my head was swimmin’
I wound up with the Dean of Women
Yippee! I’m a poet, and I know it
Hope I don’t blow it

It's "yippee" not "yippie." "Yippie" is correct for that variation on "hippie," but that's not the exclamation. The exclamation has got to be "yippee." The "-ee" ending feels like a glorious shout. The "-ie" ending is a diminutive. For example, to get back to Burns:

Wee, sleeket, cowran, tim’rous beastie,
O, what a panic’s in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty,
          Wi’ bickerin brattle!
I wad be laith to rin an’ chase thee
          Wi’ murd’ring pattle!

"Whoa" has made it to the mainstream and I use it with regularity in place of "wow."

The language is hopelessly ambiguous. I hope "along" in "walking along the train tracks" means "beside", not "on" the tracks. Otherwise I'd ask why he's not running to get her off the tracks before a train comes by.

Careful when someone says Wow! to you.

Oprah said she has a code word when things aren't working in an interview.
"The other worst guests, for me, are those who think whatever they are talking about is so spectacular, and you know it’s not. So, my go to word was always, ‘Wow.’ Like, ‘Wow! Really?'”

I'd reach for the phone and call 911 to report a little girl walking along the railroad tracks. Or maybe that was the inspiration for "Blood on the Tracks."

i WOULD say; "things that never happened for $500, Alex"..
but they Are explicitly saying that it was all imaginary.
So, what IS the point?

here's a TRUE 3 legged dog story.
I was on the Wind River reservation, about 7 am..
and was on US287 above Fort Washakie.. behind a school bus..
The bus turned on its lights, and stopped to pick up a kid.
i stopped and had some time to look and think.

The kid was at the side of the road without a house in sight.
there was a 2 rutter that went off from the hiway and went up and over a hill (to their house?)

Next to the kid was a 3 legged mongrel dog
(not ALL mongrel, looked like some other breeds mixed in too).

As the kid went into the bus, the 3 legged dog walked behind the bus to right in front of my car; where it stopped and let me know:
he might only have 3 legs, but he had TWO jaws; and TEETH!
and if i tried to get out of my car he was going to protect his boy.
(i had NO INTENTION of getting out of the car anyway)

Then the bus drove off, and the dog held me for a few seconds before giving me one last growl and walking back to the 2 rutter and off over the rise.

I thought to myself; that dog LOVES his boy, and will be back waiting for him when when the boy gets out of school.
i wish *i* had a dog like that.

Kind of odd that Dylan asks about the exact details of the scene. When writing a song or drawing a picture you are not upon oath to describe the scene accurately -- you can write or draw whatever you want.

I'm with @baghdadbob (a phrase I have never uttered before). I would have tried to figure if the girl was in trouble and needed help.

Not understand the appeal of his music? I guess you were never much older then, and you'll never be much younger now.

Bob Dylan is a singular genius, an artist of such staggering talent and originality that he has reshaped the cultural landscape. His influence can be felt in every corner of the artistic world, from literature to film to fashion. He is a true icon, a figure whose impact on our society will be felt for generations to come.

At the heart of Dylan's genius lies his ability to capture the raw emotions and experiences of human life, to distill them into powerful, evocative images that resonate with listeners on a deeply personal level.

His music is a masterclass in storytelling, weaving together themes of love, loss, and redemption in a way that is both universal and deeply personal.

But it is not just Dylan's music that sets him apart. He is a true visionary, a rebel with a cause , who has always marched to the beat of his own drum, unafraid to take risks and defy convention. His work is a testament to the power of creative freedom, to the ability of an artist to chart their own course and create something truly unique and meaningful.

Bob Dylan is a true icon, a figure whose influence will continue to shape the artistic landscape for generations to come. His music is a testament to the power of creativity, to the ability of an artist to touch the hearts and souls of people across generations and borders. He is a true inspiration, a figure whose legacy will endure long after his time on this earth has come to an end.

What the Hell is IEE saying? Does he even know? I called one word "hopelessly ambiguous", and it's a word ("along") spoken by Flanagan, not Dylan. Nothing I wrote has anything to do with Dylan's style.

More evidence that the boring bastard is paid by the word (281 in this case, just counting those he supposedly wrote), and that his paymasters may be trying to damage this site, as well as push certain political positions. Once again, he needs to bugger off to BlueSky and leave us along, or start his own blog.

Firstly, congratulations to the interviewer for sparking Bob's imagination. That's a rare thing.

Secondly, Bob's mind is still sharp and the creative juices are still pumping. Nice to hear.

Doc Weevil — do you have any “high trust” ExTwitter misinformation links to share today? 🤡🤡

Dr Weevil বলেছেন...

IEE:
Can you admit that I was not talking about Bob Dylan's style but about a single poorly-chosen word in an interviewer's question to him? That you wasted 281 words because you were too lazy to read what I wrote? We'll wait.

Dr Weevil বলেছেন...

As for high trust Twitter, I linked to an excellent Flopping Aces Tweet answered an equally good Cynical Publius tweet on the sunrise thread. I reminded everyone two posts later that it was well worth reading. You've commented since then on at least one of those threads, but had nothing to say about what either FA or CP wrote. Do you have a problem reading actual arguments?

Dr Weevil বলেছেন...

I don't even recognize the name Kobach, so I'm quite certain I didn't post anything about him or her. Maybe IEE could stop lying about what I write, staring with what I didn't write about Bob Dylan and didn't write about Kris Kobach. Or he could just bugger off to BlueSky, where he's way overdue.

And speaking of "horribly ambiguous" locutions, would "demonstrably false misinformation" be correct information? The false and the mis- would seem to cancel each other out.
