"After the 2016 election, it was common for the media to report on underemployed people in the Rust Belt who felt that they’d been cast aside. Today, manosphere ideology rages against a society that, allegedly, claims not to need men, and young people wonder whether there’s room for them in an A.I.-saturated workforce. Recently, even world-class mathematicians have felt the sting of redundancy. In a blog post titled 'The Mathocalypse,' the mathematician Scott Aaronson recounts what his nine-year-old son told his wife, the computer scientist Dana Moshkovitz: 'Mommy . . . I heard that a robot solved the math problem you worked on for your whole career!'"
From "Do You Feel Needed? Being necessary has never been more necessary—or more difficult," by Joshua Rothman in The New Yorker.

LOL democrats sure aren't acting like there is a blue wave coming.
Shitting on white men and boomers sucking the life out of the country seems to have backfired.
Now it is time for some "authoritarianism."
The banality of evil seems to point to the left, though.
Arendt was catastrophicslly wromg about that
So, communism is normal and necessary, so just shut up and accept it when we impose it on you. Got it, thanks New Yorker.

Ah the need to feel needed. This is an inversion of the alleged trend of “altruism” among the godless tech titans who see themselves as the New Annointed for the simple reason they control the present “magic mirror” that people can access **only because the titans have made it available** and with this new and growing power comes the responsibility to “fix things” like “our democracy.”
But we ALL are necessary, in that we were designed with a purpose, and blessed with physical and mental abilities to fulfill our purpose. That doesn’t change just because a machine is faster at doing some things. Would a modern audience even understand Man of La Mancha the way we did 60 years ago?

We’ve spent 50 years telling ALL students they MUST go to college during the same period when Big Ed had a 90% decline in success at teaching necessary skills. They set up huge expectations that the credentials would make them rich, not average, certainly not UNEMPLOYABLE. But really the idea Big Ed got away with selling worthless degrees (on credit backed by taxpayers) to millions of dumb students who graduated in debt and hopelessly mismatched for the jobs market was only possible because together Uniparty politicians kept the illusion of the “necessary degrees” alive simply to keep donations coming from Big Ed Unions.

The Good News
This makes perfect sense to me. The Left wants Obama as their President for Life.
My mom asked me once, because of a fight in my family, if it was her fault.
And I said, "Oh yeah, 100%, it's all your fault, everything is your fault, it's all up to you, Mom, it doesn't have anything to do with us, we thought we had choices but our teachers taught us freedom is an illusion, so cry mom, cry cry cry, it's all on you"
and she laughed and laughed
Not able to read the article but
1. I don’t believe the story about the mom and the 9 year old. Just too precious.
2. Is this the 2 millionth iteration of TrumpHitler?
3. I never believed Arendt came up with the banality of evil. It was too perfect a concept to serve a very important goal: take the luster off the Nazi Party. Evil attracts. But the banality of evil implied that Nazi evil doers were dull accountants following orders. Brilliant. And the phrase worked its magic although completely untrue about Eichmann, whose trial she was covering at the time.
Remember when Obama said A lot of those shovel ready jobs weren't really shovel ready?
The women in his coalition wanted to sit in air conditioning and tell men what to do.
This is called "closing the wage gap."
But the people who actually make stuff are complaining about feeling unnecessary and turning to "Authoritarianism."
These people are defined by their parasitic nature and the result is this projection of your faults on a galactic scale.
Well we have two wars, both of which heavily impact fertilizer production. Fertilizer plants are shutting down in the US due to lack of sulfuric acid, and yeah, OBTW, most urea comes out of the Persian Gulf, and potash? Comes out of Russia. It's almost like the idea is that we are going to have a lot of useless eaters after AI makes its full impact...
My mom, who is 84, I'm not supposed to mention that so keep it under you hat, is often cold now. And her memory is going.
"I'm cold," she says.
"You're old," I say.
"Don't call me old," she says.
"Don't tell me your cold," I say.
And we do that routine and she's cracking up.
Laughter is like orgasms for me. I love that shit. Even if it's Mom, laughter is okay. Don't tell anybody.
While we were doing this routine, it occurred to me, "Oh fuck, 99% of women would cry after that joke, and I will lose another job, I got to find somebody who will laugh like mom"
She gave me the gift of not trying to manipulate me, ever. Which spoiled me rotten but my childhood was awesome
“Do You Feel Needed? Being necessary has never been more necessary—or more difficult,"
Is this a New Yorker piece about abortion?
well, she would sit down and talk to me for an hour, which is way worse than being grounded, oh my God
Ground me, just don't make me have these sensitive conversations, Mom, oh my God
Better to spend the money on building weapons than create jobs building and maintaining infrastructure because weapons enable wars, which are an under appreciated way to keep down the troublesome populations of military aged men who are militarily inclined in your own country.
I got to go to church with my Mom. Have a nice Sunday, everybody. God's peace. I promise you, Jesus is a great rabbi. Take a class and see what he brings.

Tim is just mad that manufacturing is coming back the the US.
"Today, manosphere ideology rages against a society that, allegedly, claims not to need men,..."
Well...it's pretty clear that this society has spent a couple of decades at least, dismissing boys/men and raising up our girls/women. Remember the push to increase the self-esteem of our girls? And you've probably gotten used to men being portrayed as clumsy, clueless, dolts, who are either dumb handymen or rapists, needing to lean on the women around them to get them through the day. In commercials, TV shows, movies. It's the script standard these days. Anyway, we've made men toxic and praised women just for being over the course of years and so this is the result. Numbers: Women graduate high school in the US at a clip of 89%. Men: 85%. Then the drop off. Bachelor's Degrees in the US: Women: 58%; Men: 42%. Masters Degrees: Women: 61%; Men: 39%; Doctorate Degrees: Women/Men: 61%- 39% or 54%- 46%, depending on the area of study. I would say the push to raise women has been a complete success. Too bad about your sons.
As for the 'manosphere'. I'm not sure actual men pay any attention to some guy who shaves his chest showing himself on videos and telling you to be like him. Actual men would rather spend a minute picking roast beef from their teeth with a toothpick than watch any of that twaddle.
In El Salvador people turned to authoritarian leadership (Bukele) not because they felt unnecessary or unwanted, but because they feared for their lives from the chaos and anarchy (See: DSA Party, USA- formerly known as the Democratic Party).
As for AI. I am sure farriers felt the ground shifting underneath them as they watched the horseless carriages roll past their shop. And later they went and got jobs on the line building cars. Or auto parts. Or selling cars. Or insuring cars. Or transporting cars in large trucks. And on and on.
We have barely seen the tip of the new economy that AI will create. Do not bet against this. It is changing the world, and the world will move forward with it, no matter how high Bernie Sanders and AOC hold up their arms to stop it.
Pregnancy is not a punishment. But sex keeps leading to pregnancy, for some reason. Might want to think about this one. Maybe a feminist study group can solve this baby problem.
"License to kill," one feminist says, "I saw it in a James Bond movie. Let's give them a license to kill. And we can have girl fantasies forever."
"Yay!" all the feminists said, and they did a group hug and a little dance.
As usual, The New Yorker is barking up the wrong tree. In this country, the totalitarians are almost entirely composed of college-educated women who are absolutely convinced of their importance and consequence. As for Arendt, she invented the term, and therefore believed she had a certain right to define it. Times and words change, however. Today, tyranny grows out of ill-disciplined childhoods. Research the biographies of every shrieking, green-haired, septum-pierced harridan who ever overturned a Turning Point literature table, and you'll find a parent who thought she could reason with a four-year-old.
Here's a clue. If you are truly needed, you won't enjoy it.
I was talking to a friend who is glad that his son passed on college and is becoming an electrician, and I was discussing with him whether AI could have taken my job. I always thought that it could take the job of the programmers we gave the “scut work” assignments to, then I began to accept that my top guys were probably going to have to be prompt engineers, but *my job*? Never. I talked to executives and engineers and techs and worked out solutions to their problems, then broke the work into pieces and handed it out. But in the discussion I realized that I was just one more middleman who could be “disintermediated” despite the decades that I had spent learning an industry and software development.
I am just glad that I got out when I did.
Self esteem is like ammo. The people who have too much are the ones always looking for more.

Modern societies have decided that we are wealthy enough, and can now turn attention from creating things to managing things. Karen and Leticia are very well paid but have a negative effect on the actual production of useful output. We are fantastically wealthy and can afford to set money aside for these parasites, yes, but we can only afford so many. Where they are fully in charge, little will be produced and wealth will begin to evaporate.
My prompter's job as commenter on this blog has already been taken over by A.I. I hope it's satisfying. He gets it for free.
Average salaries:
DEI director = $211,000 per annum
Oil & Gas Field Production manager = $127,000 per annum
I have never felt the need to be needed.
