"So this is not a question of his culpability. This is a question of political reality, and the reality is there’s literally zero chance that he will be removed from office unless he does something even more egregious. Impeaching him for a third time without succeeding in removal isn’t a good idea and it would send voters a message that we’re not listening. Voters are saying, yes we are concerned about corruption and of course Congress should do oversight, but mostly what they’re saying is, 'help me in my life right now because I am struggling.'"
Said Matt Bennett, co-founder of the centrist Democratic think tank Third Way, quoted in "Will Trump be impeached? What happens now Democrats have won the midterms/Figures in the party that has won back control of Congress are wary of a third failure to remove the president and may target Pete Hegseth instead" (London Times).
Meanwhile, Hakeem Jeffries has said: "One of the first things we’re going to do in the majority, we’re going to run Pete Hegseth out of town."

Centrist Democrat. Gimme a fucking break. There are no centrist Democrats.
Good to see the Dems running the stale playbook. Maybe they’ll try and kill Trump again too.
They won the mandate running on impeachment. They will most definitely do what they said they would do. If you disagree, you’ll get the Haley Steven’s treatment, or if you are going by precedence, see Tulsi Gabbard who was put on a watch list.
Now Hegseth is the boogeyman. Hakeem Jeffries isn’t even smart enough to know he’s not smart.
LOL.
This is perfect. Trump will do what Obama did for 2 years and ignore congress.
The Democrats will show everyone their ass.
It isn't like it was worth a shit having the republicans in charge of congress.
If Republicans actually did something with their majority in the House they would have won today.
But everyone knows it doesn't really matter if the Republicans have the house or not.
Trump has had to do it all on his own and he still will.
It will be instructive to the country to watch the Democrats try to tank the economy.
Think tank is the name that won out. Nobody except me thought we should go with expert nest.
Now the 2028 Republican Primary is set up perfectly.
Vance and Rubio start from zero.
The first person to step up and be like Trump but actually follow through and start arresting fraudsters and mass deporting illegals wins.
This is why I'm sanguine. The Dems always, always, always overreach when they mistakenly think they're popular.
Give Dem’s credit. They got their crazy candidates in Texas & Michigan elected to the Senate. If that’s the direction the country wants to go so be it. China will kill us all
Its like laken and jocelyn and irina died for nothing
It's nice that he went with five. That leaves one more impossible thing for him to believe.
"Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast." - Lewis Carroll's White Queen
The GOP have no one to blkame but themselves. The've been acting like the Tories in the UK for decades.
Hegseth might actually be a vulnerable target. There may be enough upset republicans to make that work.
The upset Republicans lost. No more Cornyn & Collins. No more Mitch. Murkowski is on an island
The first time, the charges were all 🐂 💩
How would it be done? Impeach Hegseth?
It's bad but it happened because Trump carried out needed reforms and the country couldn't keep up. Iran would have nuclear weapons by now if not for him. The border would be open to criminals and terrorists. Massive fraud would be occuring without any check on it because Federal courts would not be revealing what states were hushing up. The Army would be below strength and infested with overweight timeservers. Changing all that in two years simply overwhelmed people. They think that America is so powerful that every war is a war of choice. They think the Iranians and the Chinese are inferior and we don't need to know what they think or care about what they do or have an effective armed force to handle their attacks. And all the rest is the same. Basically, too many think the world's people are so inferior that we don't need to pay attention to what they really think and are doing. Too many think that they can depend on the government. Too many think they can take from the other guy's pocket instead of building something for themselves. They may never learn their lesson but only because they die young before they finish it.
Yes, Congress can remove the Secretary of War (now the Secretary of Defense) through the impeachment and conviction process.
Under Article II, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution, civil officers of the United States—which includes cabinet-level department heads like the Secretary of Defense—can be removed from office upon "Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors".
If Bill names Secretary of Defense while he's Secretary of War is that dead naming!?
Crazy TDS woman won in Omaha.
Obama won in Omaha. It’s not like it’s a great city
Let the circus begin.
Trump hits Iran soon.
The same poor white people who voted for trump can’t pay $900 a month for heating oil and it’s plain as day what caused it.
Muslim voters in Michigan won him the state.
He got enough young black and Hispanic voters to win states that Republicans could not win before.
If he had stuck to his domestic agenda, he could have cemented a voting bloc the way Reagan did, but he got suckered into a “little excursion.”
You knew this was coming when he announced that cutoff of aid to Israel and referenced that ad in Michigan that upset you guys so much. My bet is that he was moved by it, just like any red-blooded American should have been.
So, nothing about making gas and groceries cheaper?? Fuck affordability now that we won!!!
Michigan hasn’t elected a GOP senator in 32 years.
So, two things will happen: (1) impeachment, probably more than once; and (2) Vance runs in '28 against the "do-nothing Democrat congress".
Reagan lost the Senate in 1986. Then signed Amnesty a few days later. What is this “bloc” that Reagan cemented? The House was run by Dems his entire presidency.
The l'ong march' through America's military institutions must be completed. It is a critical goal for them.
Why would Vance run? He’s got young kids and is rich.
All will continue as if nothing happened.
Democrats in the House and Senate will try to tear the economy down. People will realize they don't actually want lower inflation or more wealth.
Democrat voters will think they are a majority and will run around physically and verbally attacking the normies.
Trump will lead the reindustrialization of the country and Democrats and dumbfucks likeTim in Vermont will try to ship jobs back to China.
And Vance and Rubio start at zero.
The republican primary and 2028 general is set up for Pinochet.
"China will kill us all"
China won't have to.
So rather than figure out how he is going to deal with this new reality, he is going to bomb Iran again? There are probably enough pissed off republicans in the Senate to remove him if he does what that “gang of eight” guy said he was planning, to trash the rule of law. Guy had a stroke two days later, probably from thinking about it.
And if renewing the war is so great, why not do it before the election?
Americans get to watch Ilhan Omar parade around Congress for the next two years while knowing she committed immigration fraud and stole millions of dollars.
They will also find out her family are mass murderers in Somalia and committed actual genocide.
If Tim in Vermont gave 2 shits about genocide he wouldn't be supporting democrats but he needs something to replace his twisted little soul.
By the time 2028 comes around Americans will be demanding someone steps up and actually deports all of the people who elected the Muslims is congress.

Why did Trump run in 2016? He’s got a young kid, a beautiful wife, and is rich.
I am mad as hell about this debacle that Trump caused and you guys enabled.
It’s also pretty funny that you guys use my old screen name, tim in vermont was MAGA through and through. Is it that hard to do the math and realize that I was not the only MAGA voter who felt betrayed, and that when Tucker and MTG left, they were not alone. Trump should have listened.
Who knew there were any Third Way Democrats left! Amazing. Unfortunately a LOT of bad ideas are going to have their day now that Democrats have chosen the Red-Green alliance over the “third way.”
I’m disappointed in the outcome. My reading of the mood didn’t see jihadi El-Sayed, freaky Talarico and wildcard Hinojosa prevailing. Or Collins losing to the cousin-fucker. The outcome is bleak for America because we took another step closer to the “Fundamental Transformation” that Obama threatened us with.
But as always God is in control and the shuffling of players in the political arena is not the End of the World nor the Beginning of a New One. We DO live in interesting times.
I actually stayed and took a ton of abuse to try to warn you guys, but was ignored and you guys cheered Trump on and called me a Democrat liberal.
"We DO live in interesting times."
"This is fine" meme has entered the chat.
---- ... "mostly what they’re saying is, 'help me in my life right now because I am struggling.' "
And if he thinks they're struggling now, watch what two or more years of Democratic governance does to them.
"I want to be clear that we believe that Trump commits five impeachable offenses before breakfast every morning."
How to tell the world to stop taking anything you say seriously.
My word. You may not like Pete Hegseth for whatever reasons you have. Non-approved tattoos. Attempting to make our military hard and tough instead of politically correct. But...if they remove him they'll weaken the nation in one move.
And that will immediately remind people that these are the same people who opened up our borders and lowered national security. I give the Dems two years.
They cannot help themselves.
Don't deadname Jaq. He has transitioned.
Between his “I want to be clear” and throwing in the Hegseth impeachment bone that guy sounds like he knows he’s dealing with a self destructive mob inside his party.
The most important part of this is that the people who hate the United States and want to drag it down need to piss off the people who love this country to the point that confrontation is forced.
We need Tim to keep running around and telling everyone the world is terrible because of the United States.
We need DSA to keep stealing money and acting like proper parasites.
We need them to start trying to throw soldiers in jail and rounding up Trump supporters.
For all the good Trump has done he is too soft. His main weakness was being too nice to these people.
The old Chinese idiom does NOT mean “Everything’s fine.”
But you know that, right?
“ My reading of the mood didn’t see…”
Just remember that for every first wave boomer and silent generation voter who dies, two GenZ voters come of age. Trump squandered what could have been a grand coalition to follow Netanyahu into a pointless war.
Now I will let you guys lick your wounds in peace for a while.
Boomers voted for Kamala. Gen X voted for Trump. The problem is that there are still too many Boomers
The democrats are a toxic cancer. Spreading.
they want our military to revert back to Biden's woke squish babysitting club.
Honestly I'm kinda "interestinged" out. I'm leaning very Althouse today.I'm for boring, which I'm not gonna get it.
This is fine...I guess.
As a 23-year-old campaign staffer, Matt Bennett helped stage the infamous “Dukakis in a tank" photo-op that helped sink Michael Dukakis' 1988 presidential campaign. Matt would never again put a candidate in a tank (other than a think tank), but now he's a long-serving veteran of many political wars.
Blue State Hell makes most states unlivable.
I myself will look for a new place to live.
If we want to keep the military functional, get rid of the West Point, Annapolis, and the Air Force Academy. They have been useless since 1955

The democrat/communists have captured our schools, education as a whole, the culture and media.

Color revolutions need the military on their side. Hegseth is in the Democrat Socialists' way. He is a key take-down in their plans to destroy our Constitutional Republic.
", Congress can remove the Secretary of War (now the Secretary of Defense) through the impeachment and conviction process."
Not without 67 votes in the Senate. Not gonna happen in the next two years.
But they should try as many times as it takes. Better that than passing the laws that they want ;)
“Not without 67 votes in the Senate”
…overnight everything has become a budgetary line item so simple majority is sufficient. Also, rule of law is off…
It isn't like it was worth a shit having the republicans in charge of congress.
Sadly true.
Now Trump and his people can run against the Democrats rather than half of his own party.
Everyone is always "struggling" and "needs help" to a Democrat. Isn't it strange, what a world of downtrodden victims they see everywhere in America. People helpless without more government programs with their nice salaries for the right people.
And yet, somehow, we have the highest and longest-running levels of employment ever. Oh, well, all good things must end someday.
Yeah, if they try to impeach Hegseth that’s going to be
very puzzling to a lot of voters.
As for Trump, yesterday morning he was important to half the nation. This morning he’s absolutely essential to half the nation. He’s going to delight in using the veto pen and telling the Democrats to fuck off. He has no more elections to contest.
When you're guided by jealousy and vengeance, impeachment is in the cards.
"With malice towards some and charity for all"
and
"Ask not what you can do for your country but rather what your country can do for you"
are the new mantras.
The Dems will impeach Trump because they have to send a message to anyone who might want to run in the future,
Pretty speechless here. Blue wave? Red undertow? Bloodbath. Wow.
First, Hegseth, second, Trump. Yes they will. That is their one and only agenda. It never was about "affordability." It's about everlasting power and they will do everything to keep it.
They do protest too much.
"The Dems will impeach Trump because they have to send a message to anyone who might want to run in the future,"
California is your model here. Single-party politics is fact the goal.
Their model is Iran.
Stupid to say up front you won’t impeach. Investigate first. See what you uncover and move from there. For example suppose it’s uncovered that Trump skimmed money donated for ballroom or sold pardons or tariff protection. I don’t understand the argument not to impeach in that situation. Let the republican senators protect him and acquit him. All that matters are the facts and truth.
"new mantras."
Talarico's going to overuse the word "mandate" in the next few months so damn much everyone will start responding "THEN DUMP HER ALREADY!".
Chickelit - yes - CA is the blue state hell model.
So Mr. Bennett isn’t thrilled with the “upside” of letting Vance run as an incumbent in ‘28?
"I actually stayed and took a ton of abuse to try to warn you guys, but was ignored and you guys cheered Trump on and called me a Democrat liberal."

Wondering how they plan to do that.
"Pretty speechless here. Blue wave? Red undertow? Bloodbath. Wow."
Iran is an unforced error of yuuuuuge proportions. People that knew saw it. It was not America first. *Obviously*, it did not MAGA. It did not address any of the massive domestic concerns that elected Trump thricely. In the near term it has created economic uncertainty, in the long term it will impact oh so very much more.
Donald took his eye off the ball and got womped for it. People have, in fact, been saying this a great deal.
"Wondering how they plan to do that."
Same thing they try to do everytime, pinky, make up more fake shit.
Trump did the right thing. The mid-terms always displace the party in power. So get the reforms done in the first two years. Too fast for the country? No, the only chance for the country. As for Israel - the left can come to power there by allying with the Arabs and those who supported October 7. And they'll do it. So cut off aid to that bunch.
The left in this country isn't going to do anything for anybody but themselves. They'll steal from HHS; they'll tax the rich out of their states and pocket the proceeds. The NYT will report that all is well. But that won't make Chicago, NYC and LA solvent, low crime cities.
And - Iran? El-Sayed will help Iran and Iran will be grateful, of course. It won't bomb Dearborn. Oh, wait, El-Sayed won't be in Dearborn.
Are the walls closing in yet?
Why aren't the Republicans out in the street burning everything down? Isn't that what the losers are supposed to do?
The Republicans lost because of their approach to Governing.
And this statement by Jeffries shows it.
When the DC Democrats are in control - Give us a one vote majority and we'll impeach Trump's cabinet members. We're going to destroy his administration! We're going to push our agenda as far as we can.
When the DC Republicans are in charge - We'll pass bills helping out our big donors. And talk a lot about the Ukraine and the Middle east. We love foreign affairs! Otherwise, we're going to do zero.
Thank God, Susan Collins is gone.
"So this is not a question of his culpability. This is a question of political reality, and the reality is there’s literally zero chance that he will be removed from office *unless he does something even more egregious*. Impeaching him for a third time without succeeding in removal isn’t a good idea and it would send voters a message that we’re not listening."

Really? Does that include Democratic gerrymandering? Give us your lifelong Republican answer.
I'm surprised by the mid-term outcomes, but not shocked. They are not out of the norm.
Of all the state outcomes, Texas is the worst by far, and I predict it will have consequential impacts on national politics for some time to come.

Yes, Aggie -- take the power to draw congressional and legislative districts away from politicians and give it to independent redistricting commissions operating under transparent, enforceable rules.
The basic principle I'd advocate is this:
Politicians should not be allowed to choose their voters. Districts should be drawn by independent commissions using transparent, consistent rules that apply equally to both parties. The objective isn't to help either party win; it's to ensure voters have a meaningful choice and elections remain competitive wherever the underlying population makes that possible.
That's a position both parties ought to be able to support—even if neither party is always enthusiastic about giving up the advantage.
"Politicians should not be allowed to choose their voters. Districts should be drawn by independent commissions"
But who will choose the commissioners?

Tillis: Hegseth faces ‘a reckoning’ in lame-duck session of Congress ~ The Hill
I think starting with impeaching Hegseth would make everyone happy. Nobody wants this war, so they can hang it on him. Between the firings of the generals and all the testosterone-and-push-up theatrics, there’d be plenty of material. It would make for good TV—and be pretty cathartic, too.
Perfect example of turnout being key. In Kansas, the D Senate won with about 540 thousand votes. Harris in 2024 in Kansas got about the same number. Meanwhile Trump in 2024 got 700 thousand votes. Marshall the R Senate Candidate got about 500 thousand.
200 thousand R voters who cast a ballot for Trump in Kansas, didn't show up to vote for Marshall.
South Carolina - Trump got 1.4 million. Darlene graham got 1 million. The D senator got about the same amount as harris.
Seems that D's couldn't wait to go out and vote against Trump, and lots of Republicans just didn't give a rip. And stayed home.
Bob Boyd writes: 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴?
I'd frame the underlying principle this way:
The people who draw the districts should be independent of the politicians whose political fortunes depend on those districts.
That selection process matters just as much as the commission itself. A transparent applicant pool, independent screening, balanced representation and random selection can help ensure neither party gets to stack the deck. Independence has to be built into the process, not simply assumed.
Rogers in Michagan got 48% vs. Slotkin. He got even less against El Kabong - 45%. Guess all those Black ladies upset about his being Anti-Israel just didn't show up and vote. LOL.
Demonstrating unparalleled instincts, Haley Stevens sure picked the right time to side with Republicans.
@RCOCEAN, 60% of the Jewish vote went to the guy whose best buddy says “Desth to the Jews.” Like chickens voting for Col. Sanders.
Looks like Haley Stevens sacrificed her career for nothing. The Jewish members of her coalition she wanted to protect voted to put the fox in charge of the henhouse.
Why is it always the first instinct of the Democrats to punish instead of build?
No, Jaq. You didn't try to warn us. You always wallowed in your virtue signaling. You're not a good person. You have taken the lords name in vain.
It is common to think that impeaching Trump is a pointless exercise because it takes 67 Senate votes to convict, and there will never be 67 Democratic (or Republican-“traitor”) votes.
Throughout this campaign I have felt that that was a mistaken presumption.
Because with a simple majority - unlike the previous two Trump impeachments - the Senate can now vote to have a real trial. A lengthy, scathing, scorched-earth proceeding with courtroom-level evidence against, and cross-examination of, everyone around Trump. The embarrassing spectacle when Trump refuses to testify himself.
And that proceeding might shake loose the 67-vote threshold.
Haley Stevens found her true love. I think she'll move on.
Hopefully Trump has a plan to get himself a pardon before he leaves office. If Vance runs and gets elected have Vance pardon him. If Vance loses, resign in Jan 2029, and have Vice- President, now POTUS, Vance pardon him.
In any case, win or lose in 2028, everyone in his administration should get a pardon. If the D's take over the DOJ in 2029, it'll be "We want to put Trump and his subordinates in Jail" time.
The D's will waste everyone's time with hearings and impeachments and fake trials.
The real danger is the Senate R's "cutting deals" when the D's put together a reconciliation. The standard Senate R practice is to cave and give the D's what they want, and then claim "We had to do it. Otherwise the Government would shut down" or " We got X (which average voters don't care about) in exchange. Sigh. Its the best we could do".
Could the D's get 67 to remove Hegseth? Maybe. never underestimate the stupidity of the Republican Senate.

Sorry, there's no such thing as independent any more.
Of course it's a bad idea.
When has the government ever been able to avoid implementing a bad idea?
"Why is it always the first instinct of the Democrats to punish instead of build?"
And they voted for that. Communism is consistent in method and results.
There are a number of ways to make drawing congressional lines nonpartisan, but nobody in power wants that. It would take a Constitutional Amendment to make it fair.
And that proceeding might shake loose the 67-vote threshold.
It's not 67 votes. It's "two-thirds of the Members present." If the day comes for a vote, expect plenty of spineless republicans to stay home. Unlikely enough of them to make a difference, but it will require fewer than 67 votes to impeach.
If the D's take over the DOJ in 2029, it'll be "We want to put Trump and his subordinates in Jail" time.
We live in a Banana Republic. You don't get to cry when your team is targeted. You don't get to prosecute critics for "seashells" and also cry about lawfare.
The Trump Administration could have restored law and ordered and ended political prosecutions, but instead it decided political prosecutions are handy as long as they are the ones doing the prosecuting. It's too late to cry about it now.
You thought this was about the Iran war.
NO - the democrats seek harm, legal harassment, ruin, and punishment.

Don't forget that a lot of those older folks are still Roosevelt Democrats, as my grandma was until her last breath, even though she voted for Reagan in 1984.
Based on what I've seen of my son and his friends, who cluster around the millennial/Gen Z transition, they are still very hard right-wing, but felt betrayed by what they perceive as Trump's warmongering on behalf of Israel. Many of them, although not my boy, stayed home this year. They are still eminently winnable by a Rubio, Vance, or DeSantis who explicitly repudiates further meddling in the Middle East.
However, between now and 2028, there had better be action to match the words, and if there is not, I would not be surprised to see them back a dark horse like Massie in the primaries. (Those who are still Republicans, that is. Most of them are independent.)
“The Trump Administration could have restored law and ordered and ended political prosecutions, but instead it decided political prosecutions are handy as long as they are the ones doing the prosecuting. It's too late to cry about it now.”
Didn’t Trump say he would be “your retribution”? The Trumpists were OK with that.

Trump gave into the greatest temptation for all US presidents; war in the Middle East and failed to see how terribly it would play at home both politically and economically. Now end the war, bring down energy costs, and prioritize the American people.
Dearest Inga;
Trump asked me to vote as if his name were on the ballot. Here in Michigan.
“Yes, sir,” I said. With tears in my eyes. I’m a pretty big, strong guy. But I answered him with tears streaming down my face. Nobody had ever seen tears like my tears when I was voting as if Trump had been on my ballot.
And now all I can say is, “Transgender for everyone.”
Thank you for your attention.
Yes, someone put together a montage of Trump saying “Vote like I’m on the ballot”. Pretty funny😄
A question for historians of the future: Had Trump prosecuted the Iran attacks to unconditional surrender of the regime, without negotiation pauses, would the election results have been in his favor? The lesson I read here is if you attack, do so to win, bigly, without stopping until the other side begs for peace.

Trump should help arrange a deal for Elon to buy Greenland.
If the Dems don't play nice, Trump can make life very difficult and expensive for many. Wary co-existence is better for the country that war.
Vance may be the biggest loser here. The nomination will be contested.
Rubio is a gifted Pol and, I believe, held in high regard by many.
Ron DeSantis is a player. Probably has more executive cred than any of the others
Ms. Graham was doomed from the start. Her brother was never all that popular in SC, to start with. He was just a safe seat.
The growing South is a victim of its own success. Like popular tourist areas, greed led to bringing in too many people from elsewhere.
Just like Hillary the Harris-Walz "adminstration" is still not a thing, and most people feel Pretti Good about it.
