We see this heron every morning — lately — at a place I call the AVP (alternative vantage point). Now, we feel he knows us and waits for us. Before, he'd been standing rooted to one spot quite near the shore, undisturbed by our approach. There was an aura of mutual respect and trust. But this morning, as we walked up to where we would first see him, he flew up and crossed right in front of us. It was glorious! Then he landed right over there, where you see him in the photo, and he remained rooted there, posing for all our pictures.

Bonnie Tyler - Holding Out For A Hero
I need a heron!
Nice.
My mate’s a bartender and she takes the dog for a long walk after work; about 1 a.m. Through our woodsy neighborhood and nearby fields.
Almost every night, at the same spot, there’s a fox waiting for her. It never retreats or approaches. Just stands and looks. Sometimes, woman and dog pause for a moment and speak to the fox. A distance of 20 or 30 feet is respected.
One wonders what any of them are thinking. Maybe the distance would shrink if not for the dog (a barker who never barks at the fox). There would seem to be familiarity and curiosity.
Footnote: For the last few years, a fox or two has taken to hanging out near the outdoor tables by a guy grilling wurst at Kleine Scheidegg in Switzerland. They will approach people who look like easy marks. The evolution of domestication?
I was thinking Hank would've been a nice name.

Aaron Heron if a boy, Erin Heron if a girl.
Oh Meade!!! You NEVER, as in NOT EVER talk about old girlfriends with your wife.
I find it stunning (or not really) that the left are NOW the proven/real/actual Anti-Science collective.
The left are anti-Chromosome. Yes, really. XX and XY are offensive to the LEFT(D).
Again - Chromosomes are highly offensive to the hivemind lockstep un-thinking anti-science Soviet left collective.
(we know why - it's the obsession they all have and /yet deny of trans child abuse and female abuse and trans-obsessive-madness)
Chromosomes.
Especially in Blue State Hell towns like Portland.
Here's the proof.
That heron must trust you. I've seen them up close but not for long. They inevitably take off.
'Cause Mike gets up in the morning
And he flies to work at five
And he flies back home at nine-thirty
Takes the same route every time
'Cause his world is built 'round punctuality
It never fails
And Mike's—oh—so good
And Mike's—oh—so fine
And he catches fish so easily
Doesn’t need a pole or line
Mike's a well-respected bird about town
Doing the bird things so professionally

The photo is beautiful. You have to get up early....etc.
It reminded me, yesterday were stuck in traffic on the way to my sister's house in Novato, CA. Alongside the road we noticed a white great egret. I could see that it was hunting. Just as we passed he caught a small lizard for lunch. I thought, "how cool". My wife felt sorry for the lizard.
“They will approach people who look like easy marks. The evolution of domestication?”
Or rabies.

Or rabies.
But I repeat myself…
My swim coach when I was a kid was Paul Herron. He didn't eat lizards, though.
A blue Heron dines on my bass regularly. Fortunately for him/her they are protected. My bass are not.
At first I thought it said heroin at dawn. That caused me to flash back to that wonderful British movie Trainspotting.
Some Third World immigrants might say, "A heron ain't nothing but a sandwich."

It's not getting much attention, but it should.
There was an election in British Columbia yesterday. Conservatives won 64 out of 93 seats. It will be the first time they've held a majority since ....
1928.

We have GBHs in abundance here on the Chesapeake. Our experience is that their toleration for human encroachment varies quite a bit, some fly away at about 20 yards, a few let you get as close as 5. A restaurant we used to visit had one that would take fish by hand.
I've had them show interest in fishing lures. One even went so far as to pick up the Zara Spook I was throwing. We were both lucky it didn't get hooked.
And the BC conservatives will do absolutely nothing with their majority. They're just like USA Republicans.
I’ve seen videos of GBH swallowing rats and baby alligators whole. Pre AI. I kid you not. Their beauty is cunning and, quite literally, stunning.
Looks like Lula won.
His name is Ank.
