Agree with Bill Burr on this. Then again, most of media sees sports not as a show case of competition on the field, but as a magnet attracting viewers that need to be sold something else. People would pay a lot more than the ads to watch the game without them, but the masses won’t.

Ice Nine म्हणाले...

It's great that Bill has gone back to just being hilarious instead lame-ass political. We hope...

rhhardin म्हणाले...

You could add the playing of the national anthem. Once you let one in, everybody's got a holier than thou cause to display.

n.n म्हणाले...

Meta-static.

Original Mike म्हणाले...

Yeah.

Peachy+2 म्हणाले...

Burr has gone off the rails lately - but on this I agree! In fact, I was just discussing this very topic the other day.

Stop turning sports events into woke lectures.

Sports, in part, are to help us get our minds off of our troubles.

If the wealthy players want to give generously to their favorite charity (cancer or otherwise) GREAT! Do that.
But enough with the virtue signaling during a game.

The other thing I am sick of - is the Jay-Z porn hub half time show. The Elderly and little kids are watching - and everyone in between. Enough of your bad bunny porn cultural rot sex-obsessed slime/grime BS. I also agree with Ann Althouse on showing collective respect for American pride via the National Anthem.

(and screw Nike and Kapernick while I'm at it)

Peachy+2 म्हणाले...

Also - the "breast cancer" pink crap. Enough of that, too.
Why elevate one cancer over another? What color signifies male testicular cancer? or prostate cancer?
or childhood cancers? ... or liver cancer... or pancreatic cancer? or Malignant Melanoma cancer? or or or

Aggie म्हणाले...

The lurking problem in the background is the driving need to hold your attention, as a fan. Every second of the event must provide something for your eyes, your ears, your taste buds. Sporting events have become an endless series of distractions that have nothing to do with the game. And it detracts from the experience.

Joe Bar म्हणाले...

That's the old Bill Burr. His current incarnation is a scolding, woke, troll.

Joe Bar म्हणाले...

Do mwe really need to see "End Racism" in the endzone?

Jaq म्हणाले...

When they run a video segment as the next batter walks to the plate, or interview players or coaches during the game, this is pretty much my reaction every time.

Wilbur म्हणाले...

I agree with Hardin. From childhood, I never viewed a ballgame as an event where playing the National Anthem was de rigueur.
As someone who deeply loves and appreciates this country, I believe it cheapens it to play it before every damn football, baseball, hockey, spelling bee and what-have you.
People become blase' to it, exactly the opposite of what is intended.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

If it's on display, it's not patriotism.

Aggie म्हणाले...

Well.....maybe I'm old fashioned or something, but I think it's entirely appropriate to kick off a game with the national anthem, but that might be because it has always been thus, for me. We're not the only country that does it, although I don't know who started the tradition.

The best way to combat the blasé attitude is to sing along like you mean it. And uncover your head. I notice that patriotism is rising with this administration, as it did with '45'. It's not a 'my country right or wrong' type thing, for me it's more like an expression of gratefulness, and amazement at what a great time it is to be alive and human, and American. I notice a lot of those around me in the crowd seem to share the vibe, hand over heart. That's different from jingoism.

Never heard of this unfunny guy until right now. But I can tell you that Creighton basketball has a Pink Out every year. Former Coach Greg McDermott started it in honor of his wife who had breast cancer. Big money raised over the years. It is meaningful and moving.

Breezy म्हणाले...

I appreciate the anthem, too, as it reminds me of the men and women who serve to protect us and this great nation. How lucky am I to be born here in this time. The older I get though, the tearier I get listening to it. Wuss, I know.

I understand all the ads adorning the fields in pro sports arenas, but I wish they came with a donation of a number of seats by lottery so the games can be enjoyed live by a larger cross section of people. There’s nothing like that experience. Teams really help a community to unify.

Howard म्हणाले...

Do you people know that Joe Rogan is now critical of Jabba the Trump as well? You're blind loyalty is noted.

Amexpat म्हणाले...

"What color signifies male testicular cancer? or prostate cancer?"

Blue for prostrate cancer is a thing. In Norway, it was a trend to have pink colored silages bales in farm fields to support breast cancer (they're normally white). One summer I started seeing lots of blue silages bales, which was to support prostrate cancer.

Ice Nine म्हणाले...

Why does breast cancer and prostate cancer need to be "supported" with a color? Or any cancer? Like a team color, for godsake. What does "supporting" those things with some symbol even mean or amount to, for that matter?

It also gave the more self-absorbed lefties a stage to display their disapproval of America.

“If it's on display, it's not patriotism.”
By that logic, a wedding isn’t love and a funeral isn’t grief.
Let’s all celebrate Independence Day in our heads next Fourth of July.

boatbuilder म्हणाले...

Howard--Rogan has been critical of Trump for a long time. He's a sort-of libertarian lefty, a former comedian who is clueless enough to consider Rolling Stone as a credible publication. But he has had Trump, and Musk, and Tulsi Gabbard, and many others who the corporate media shuns, on for free-flowing interviews.
He's popular because he is open-minded, and willing to listen. Which is unusual these days.

paminwi म्हणाले...

Hey rrhardin: Bite me!

rhhardin म्हणाले...

'"If it's on display, it's not patriotism.”
By that logic, a wedding isn’t love and a funeral isn’t grief. '

You marry each other at weddings. Everybody else is a witness. There's also a double yes logic at play. You've already said yes, and the wedding says yes to that yes. The second yes constitutes a signature.

A funeral is a social obligation. Handkerchiefs are used to conceal the lack of tears, Ambrose Bierce said.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

The Spain high speed (albeit one stopped) train crash "raises questions about safety," the news says. Germany lowers flags to half staff in a display of national grief. What Germany has to do with it I don't know, I just relay the news.

There is the news rule to watch out for: domestic crash is X killed including Y children; international is X killed including Y Americans. So far I have heard neither.

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

@rhhardin
You just argued that the public yes is what makes the private yes binding. That’s the case for display, not against it.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

It's a display of the signature, not a display of love.

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

You started with “If it’s on display, it’s not patriotism.” Now it’s “display doesn’t show everything.” That’s like going from “if they’re smiling, they’re not happy” to “a smile doesn’t prove happiness.” I agree with the second one.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

DIsplay shows fear and conformity, in the case of the national anthem.

Try to think of a form of patriotism that isn't on display. Think about how that differs from standing for the national anthem.

Maybe you can't.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

Perhaps you are thinking of the military training in flag etiquette. That's training individuality out in order to get a team orientation. It's precisely important that the revered object be pointless lest the point of the exercise (team above all) be missed. You don't want that thoughtlessness in citizens.

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

For a crowd, a display doesn’t need everyone to feel it in order to count. At the playing of the anthem, some people are moved and some are just bored. It’s still a patriotic event.
The wedding as well. Some guests are bored, some are there for the open bar, and one or two may think the marriage won’t last. None of that makes the couple’s vows less real.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

The guests at a wedding are witnesses, bored or not. The vows are formulaic. They're there to witness the signature.

It's not a display of love. Indeed the groom usually wants to avoid the ceremony, just show me where to sign, while the woman has the lilies and bluebird delusion.

The lilies and bluebird delusion corresponds to the so called patriotism of standing for the national anthem.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

Favorite remark on getting married, one young waitress to an older one: You're not going to wear white, are you?

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

You’ve shifted the argument again.
First display wasn’t patriotism. Then display didn’t show everything. Now display shows fear and conformity.
Setting all this aside Setting all that aside, the anthem before a game is a wonderful tradition. Strangers who are about to root against each other stand together first.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

It's forced conformity in bodily posture.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

Derrida on public prayer

"Of course there are public prayers, there are people who in communities pray together and the first thing I will tell you is that when I was young my first rebellion against my own religious environment had to do with public prayer, I mean prayers in common. So my way of praying, if I pray, is absolutely secret, even if I'm in public, even if in a synagogue I knew that my own prayer would be silent and secret and interrupting something in the community."

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

lol Derrida - his way of praying is “absolute secret”, then he announces it to the public. So much for absolute secrecy.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

His prayer is secret, his way of praying is not. If you listen to the whole clip he does a pretty good analysis of prayer.

Jaq म्हणाले...

Nobody forces you to take your seat before the anthem starts, it only holds up the game if you believe that it is part of the game. It’s like movie previews, I hate them so I take my seat 20 minutes after the publshed “start time.”

Jaq म्हणाले...

I get the feeling that anthem haters just don’t like when others listen to it.

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

Yes, I lol’d too quickly. He prayed in public, but his prayers were secret. Derrida didn’t walk out of the synagogue. He prayed with everyone and kept his prayer to himself. That’s all the anthem asks.

Lazarus म्हणाले...

Would we even hear the national anthem if it wasn't played at sporting events? Would people even know as many words from it as they do?

Given that nobody is actually *for* cancer and watching baseball games isn't really much fun, Bill Burr is way out on limb -- but that's where he's supposed to be. It's part of the act.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

The anthem wants bodily conformity. That's what the self-appointed enforcers are about, and why it works to get the crowd to stop milling around and pay attention, its original purpose. The ballgame is about to start.

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

Derrida talks about that:
He describes prayer as partly “a ritual that is involving the body in coded gestures, in common language”. That’s bodily conformity, and he treats it as part of real prayer, alongside the secret part. The body joins the group, and the inside stays your own. That’s exactly what happens during the anthem.

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

Derrida is very pro national anthem. Who knew?

todd galle म्हणाले...

I think this is true. I've been at stage 3 for kidney failure for a few years, tipping on to dialysis. I don't wave flags or yell from the rooftops. Enjoy our national pastimes without this crap. Don't get me started on 'Breast Cancer Awarement Month'. I'm sorry, if you're an adult female, you should be quite aware of breast cancer. If not, I don't know that modern medicine is able to help you. Whew, there, I spit out that bitter pill.

Howard म्हणाले...

My brother, a firefighting helicopter pilot, got a gold medal for heroism from Governor Schwarzenegger. There was a invocation or whatever the heck you call it where a man of the cloth led the entire crowd and everybody up on the stage to bow their heads in prayer. I of course kept looking around and the only other people that I met eyes with was my brother and Maria Shriver whom after catching my gaze looked down and started checking her nails like she just got out of a Brookline salon. I'm pretty sure she already found out about the maid by that time.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

Call it breast awareness month.

RCOCEAN II म्हणाले...

Good ol' RH. We all have our obsessions. Guess hating the national anthem is his. Maybe he got his hit on his head by a rock while the Star Spangled Banner was playing.

Boy, you sure can tell all of the people at Althouse are boomers. There is no country, there is no patriotism in the elite class, but hey.. standing for the national anthem... whats up with that?

rhhardin म्हणाले...

Derrida goes into, in that clip, prayers having two ages. Part of it is as a child, with a severe grandfather concerned with justice, and a mother who believes in your innocence. Part of it is as an adult, even as an atheist, not knowing who he is addressing. The ultimate conclusion is that only atheists can pray. Believers are just ordering pizza.

As a baseball audience, you're an adult.

Howard म्हणाले...

I always enjoy the national anthem. It's a very difficult song to play and or sing well. For a while, the warriors had discovered this 10-year-old girl who could belt it out like nobody's business and so they had her sing that song tons of time during a season or so.

Choirs usually do a horrible job. I was at a a safari club international fundraising banquet in Southern California some 20 odd years ago and they had managed to get Ted Nugent to give the opening speech and then play the national anthem in the style of Jimi Hendrix. That was probably the best rendition of our national anthem I've ever heard in person. Although at one warrior game they had Carlos Santana on guitar and his wife on drums. That was pretty good.

RCOCEAN II म्हणाले...

Seriously, 50 million Zulus could move here. We could have an elite set up Gulags, and the boomers would be still be talking about the pledge of alliegance and singing the national anthem. Or abortion. Or Racism.

That's another boomer obsession. The proudest day of their life was when they told racist Grandma that Negroes were people too. Oh those magical wonderful negroes like Sidney Potier.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

As a trombone/baritone player in the high school band, I have played a thousand national anthems. Musically it's very uninteresting. You add little flourishes to spice it up. But the worst part if having to stay around and listen to whatever program follows. Usually some politician on Memorial day.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

Faure's Clair de lune would be harder to sing and much more beautiful. Here's one sung in recital by an 18 year old woman link

The excellent thing is the complete lack of cues to the singer where to come in, making it intensely interesting. Ought to be a template for a national anthem.

Do not confuse with Debussy's.

Howard म्हणाले...

High school bands always sound out of tune. No wonder you thought it was simple while you were butchering it. Those little flourishes were cringe-worthy

RCOCEAN II म्हणाले...

Ok. But just be happy you didn't have to play God Bless America a thousand times. The star spangled banner is "Complex" compared to that Pop song.

Ice Nine म्हणाले...

Month? I've observed breast awareness lifetime since I was about 14y/o.

Eva Marie म्हणाले...

The problem is, I listened to the clip:
He says that certainty turns prayer into a pizza order, not belief. He also says that both the child and adult are present at the same time (kind of like at the ballpark). And the anthem doesn’t expect anything back. By Derrida’s test, it’s the real thing.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

The anthem demands bodily conformance. If you attended for the anthem, that's one thing. If you attended for a ballgame, that's another.

Bible reading in school, which used to happen, had the same point, getting the class to stop milling around and pay attention. It had a beneficial side effect, though, in giving kids an intuition for conjugating old-timey verbs (KJV) that is completely lacking today. Musically the anthem is junk. I'd suggest replacing it with something decent. Maybe Frère Jacques, learn French at the same time.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

There's a part 1 and part 3 of the Derrida clip. They're the first part of a long lecture given at SUNY, the later parts of which are not intelligible owing to the questioners wanting to make impressive academic points.
