From "Trump revels in ‘united Ireland’ uproar as Gerry Adams weighs in/With the US president ‘loving’ the stir his comments made, the former Sinn Fein leader says they reflect a wider sentiment held by Americans" (London Times).
Gerry Adams, the former leader of Sinn Fein, said Trump's comments were "welcome, even though we profoundly differ with him on many other matters, as we did with his predecessors."

My understanding is that the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 lays out a path for unification, given a plebiscite of both The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. And that given current demographics and political trends, it is only a matter of time.
So he is right.
Of course he loves his comments, he thinks it's working to disguise what is actually going on in the real world. Just wait for the price of gasoline to spike after the strategic petroleum reserve is down to fumes.

Unionists and Republicans are making common cause with regard to migrants, but are unlikely to share power in a united Ireland.
Trump can’t help himself. He’s a uniter not a divider.

No matter the day or where he is, he makes sure he is in the news.

…yes I find it disturbing London Tomes chooses Gerry Adams as the voice of reason vis a vis Trump…
Total US crude inventories stand at 424.1 million barrels, down .4 million from a year ago.
As point of comparison, Biden released 180 million barrels from the SPR in 2022 alone to artificially lower prices for the midterms.
I suspect that Trump’s idea of a united Ireland involves Ireland being part of the United Kingdom.
…yah I don’t know how the leftie strategy teams decided ‘high fuel prices’ would be their crunch time political talking point, especially since economic data micro and macro is readily available to every voter, their own finances being the big one…
…you can’t really pound away at the idea and trick most voters anymore, they’ve grown accustomed to making the correct choice between what’s being repeated to them ad nauseam and what say their lying eyes…
Indeed Rehajm. US petroleum production is higher than a year ago, and was higher over the summer than any previous summer. We did produce more last winter, but less than 1/10 of one percent more.
…even the price situation is easy the decipher. The price delta between California and the rest of the nation is almost $2/gal for gas and $1.50 for diesel. Why the discrepancy? In CA fuel is heavily taxed and government is deliberately sabotaging supply chains because why? Politics? Environmental kooks? Embrace AND?
Once Greenland and Iceland join the US, why not a united Ireland?
…the bold of ‘I loved my comments’ is telling. I think we’re being invited to believe Trump as narcissist is reason to get rid of him or something? Who’s the narcissist again?
Andy Burnham's goal is to preside over the breakup of the United Kingdom. A majority of the citizens seem to have lost the will to keep it together. This is a signal to the orange lads to get ready for the inevitable.
Ireland would benefit from exiting the EU, as would all the rest.
“A majority of the citizens seem to have lost the will to keep it together. “
Haven’t the citizens actually lost the will to keep Andy Burnham and the rest of that government?
"Haven’t the citizens actually lost the will to keep Andy Burnham and the rest of that government?"
We shall see. What will determine the outcome?

Breezy, enough to protest in the streets, but not quite enough to actually dislodge him from office.
To connect the oil discussion with US/UK relation, just think of the UK as the world's version of California when it comes to oil and regulations.
The 1 million protestants in northern Ireland have no desire to leave the UK for the EU. Or to be part of a Ireland where they would be 1/7 of the population.
Northern Ireland is fairly well run. Ireland isn't. The Irish want to be Nothern Africa at this point. And are turning their country into a diverse wonderland, where houses are expensive and you have a black/brown underclass to do all the work.
Of course the further you are from these disputes the sillier they seem. Why cant the jews and arabs just get along? Whats the deal with the Irish protestants and catholics? But these conflicts exist for a reason.
Trump cant even get along with Rosie.
I was just reading that during WW 2, the UK was having problems with the U-boats and wanted Ireland to join the allies. The bait? The Irish would get Ulster.
The Irish turned it down because they didn't trust the UK. What would stop England for reneging on the agreement after the war? A lost opportunity.
You can think these things about Ireland or the Malvinas or Quebec (I sort of do), but if you're president, you're better off not saying them.
The sectarian prejudices aren't what they used to be in both Irelands. Religion isn't what it used to be either, so reunification isn't an impossible or crazy idea anymore. For economic reasons, Northern Ireland actually may prefer being part of the EU, rather than the UK -- if not already, then in the future.
I wonder if the lapsed Catholics and the lapsed Protestants hate each other with the same intensity as in days of old. Religious disputes between two groups of non-believers seems stupid, but history is a potent force........The Protestant views on Brexit might now have more bearing on the issue of re-unification than their views on Papal infallibility. The people in southern Ireland now have a greater average income than the people of northern Ireland. That's also a potent argument for re-unification.
‘Trump cant even get along with Rosie’
…Rosie can’t even get along with Trump…
The Irish, like Americans, are money driven. So they will look at re-unification and if they can make 1 euro out of it, they might do it. OTOH if it costs them..money... why forget it.
@Althouse, you must have a powerful case of TDS to bother commenting on this silly kerfluffle at all, much less at 4:00 am.
I think he should make this really fun and suggest that not only is it inevitable that Ireland unifies but that it then leaves the EU and becomes the "United Ireland of America", just like Greenland and Iceland will. He's basically a real estate developer, so any country with the work "land" in its name looks good for an acquisition.
William, Protestant versus Catholic in Ireland is more an issue of identity than it is of theology. So, no.
A master strategist at the very top of his game. Is there no end to this man's genius? And yesterday Trump demanded that Ukraine stop bombing Russian refineries.
I always love the "Im going waste time pointing out what a waste of time this is". Okey-doeky.
I wish Trump had learned to just shut up.
Jimmie Walker did a bit about why the Irish Protestants and Catholics fight one another. He said that in a country with no Blacks and no Jews, they have to improvise.
Thousands have died for a unified Ireland. Yes, it probably will reunify at some point, but since it is unlikely to happen peacefully, Trump should not be pushing it for fun.
Anyone who died to "unite Ireland" was a fool.
I'd like gas prices to be lower. Doesn't mean I'm going to vote for communists.

Yesterday Portillo said the Southern establishment, to include the Fenians, don’t really want to have to deal with a demanding 1/7 minority either, even though their party manifesti call for a unified island.
He also mentioned all the logistical problems: which country would pay Northerners’ state pensions? What happens to the Northern Ireland NHS? Etc.

What's the plan MAGA kids? Blame someone else?
Well, we can all wish for fantastic things.
This morning, I heard Canada is trying to join the EU, as an "Associate" member.
Identity isn't what it used to be in Northern Ireland either. Or in the Republic, which has been running away from what it was in De Valera's day as fast as it can. Most young people probably aren't interested in parades to commemorate 300-year-old battles. Of course, that could all collapse if the economy tanks. Unemployed youth with time on their hands are often attracted to extremist politics.
"Catholics" already outnumber "Protestants" in Northern Ireland. What happens if they become a majority? Will the "Protestant" bastion shrink to tinier size, or will post-Protestants and post-Catholics find a way of living together in one country?
Me, I'm just praying for the reunification of the "United" States. I dunno, maybe if the Democrats all had strokes, like Fetterman, and they regain their sanity? You know like stop "Kirking" anyone who disagrees with them? And maybe stop voting for communists or jihadist Muslims...because you're LGBTQ and can't stand Christians?
Ireland has bigger problems - the Islamic leftist /woke mix cancer has taken hold.
My wife’s people are from Donegal, northish. Mine are from Galway, west coast. We hope they would prefer reunification to Islamification. The Republic may need the IRA. We love that Trump makes people think about everything rather than just accepting the status quo. We are sorry that so many people, particularly among the leftist elite and their groupies, aren’t up for it.
“Ireland would benefit from exiting the EU, as would all the rest.”
Ireland would definitely not benefit from leaving the EU. They have become wealthy by having the lowest possible EU corporate tax of 12% and promoting companies to headquarter in Ireland for seamless access to European markets. Since they are a “small poor” country they get away with it. Apple made a fortune being in Ireland paying lower than US wages and taxes, and it helped them make tens of billions. But even the EU got wise and carved them a penalty because it was too obvious.
The EU works for Ireland because they are treated as a historically poor charity case.
Just what Ireland needs, visits from senile aristos
IEE: “What's the plan MAGA kids? Blame someone else?” Leftmediaswine toady pontification. No, toady. We give Trump credit for closing the border - the cardinal issue of 2024 for both patriotic Americans and Democrat seditionists, who now fight deportation of criminal immigrants, and his many other successes beyond your ken. So it goes with 5D chess.
In WW2 there were reports of small sea coast towns in western Ireland that supplied German U Boats with food, and a report came out in the 1980s that diesel fuel supplies in Cork were destroyed by British Commandos due to fear that the town would refuel u boats at night. These things were probably considered very sensitive and kept secret because the Republic of Ireland was a British Commonwealth until 1949.
Jim: “Just what Ireland needs, visits from senile aristos.” Thanks, Jim. Now tell us what Ireland really needs. More military age male Islamic immigrants? A multi-religion king? Its own Rotherham?
"in WW2 there were reports of small sea coast towns in western Ireland that supplied German U Boats with food, and a report came out in the 1980s that diesel fuel supplies in Cork were destroyed by British Commandos due to fear that the town would refuel u boats at night. "
That sounds like just the sort of stupid thing churchill would approve of. U-boats never ran short of food. As for diesel one uboat needed 30,000 gallons. Given how fuel was rationed in Ireland in WW 2, I doubt they were about to give the Germans 30,000 gallons. And break Irish Neutrality.
But churchill attacked Norway and no problem with doing anything to win no matter how unneccessary or immoral.
As said about Covfefe TDS is powerful rejuvenation!!
Look at what happened in Scotland the SNP won and the next thing you know they're pushing for open borders and electing a Pakistani muslim as their PM.
If scotland wins their independence they'll become Africa North. And love it.
But churchill attacked Norway and no problem with doing anything to win no matter how unneccessary or immoral.

"Pssst! (over here.) sotto voce Nothing in war is moral"
The toughguy keyboard kommando speaks up. Yeah killing babies is how you win wars. Killing old women is the route to victory.
Nothing is moral in war - would be news to every US General. Even George Marshall or General Sherman.
Sherman hanged soldiers who raped women. He was offended when he was accused of burning down Columbia. And he was outraged when South Carolina bushwackers killed Union soldiers while foraging and killed an equal number of Confederates. He told the Confederate General that that wasn't allowed. He was even upset when the Confederates planted land mines (called torpedoes in those days) and considered it "Immoral".
RC's back here solidly on the side of Islam and never, ever on the side of Christians and Jews. Only Muslims matter! Why I bet when Muslims burn a Christian church in Nigeria with the Christians inside, RC says not a single word about the dead Christian kids or babies there, do you RC? When Muslims commit over 35,000 terror attacsk in the last 26 years all around the world, I've yet to hear a single word of condemnation from RC. But someone says they don't want Muslims to be there chopping off heads, and that's a massive crime, isn't it RC.
RC writes: "But churchill attacked Norway and no problem with doing anything to win no matter how unneccessary or immoral."
That's how you can tell it's a war, and not just international pretend-time.
"I’d love to see it unified. I think it would be a great feather in everybody’s cap if that happened. It’s going to happen eventually."
"Now the UK will have something to say about it, obviously. But I think it would be a great thing. I mean, how can it be bad?"
What a lunatic! How dare he! Something must be done!
Churchill, FDR, and Morgenthau to the contrary - war is politics by other means. Not a caveman struggle without rules or morals. The worship of churchill always amazes me. Do people realize he signed-off on the insane, immoral "Morgenthau Plan".
Or that he demanded the Chiefs of staff looking into dropping Anthrax on Germany in the summer of1944? Millions of German civilizans would've been killed (not to mention "Our allies" foreign workers) And why did Churchill do that? He was upset at a V-1 attack that killed a hundred UK Civilians! God knows what Hitler would've done in retaliation, probably killed all our POWs. And use nerve gas.
Of well, that would've showed those kraut babies and old women to fool with the Brits! War isn't a tea party. Of course by 1944 the war was won. German victory was impossible with the Germany army fighting on three fights and having to retreat all the way from Stalingrad to Warsaw.
And Churchill was the clown who labeled Stalin "Uncle Joe" and then a year after the war was jabbering about "The iron Curtain". And the "Red menace". TIme for another war. They were so much fun - for Winnie.

If Patton were alive today, he'd advocate continuing the battle for freedom by pushing Rosie O'Donnell back to Ireland.
He'd be quoted: "No bastard ever won a war by letting Rosie O'Donnell into his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard let Rosie into **his** country."
Ocean, I am a gigantic Winston fan. I belong to the Churchill Society and have even been to one of their conventions, where I met two of his granddaughters. Winston is a model of the sort of elites we used to have: he put himself in harm's way over and over, starting before he was 20. I will not be found badmouthing him.
Nevertheless, I must concur in part with your analysis of his WW2 strategy,
The Krauts were never going to successfully invade Britain. Even their bombers couldn't reach the whole island. And the rockets and drones took most of the war to develop.
We could have just let Hitler try to run Europe for a few years and watched the Reich collapse under its own inefficiency. And/or watched the Soviets and Krauts duke it out. And watched the Krauts and Eye-ties fight all the African liberation movements, if any such movements had dared to spring up.
In the Pacific we could have just let Japan have the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Let Tojo and his successors fight all the wars of national liberation. Or watched those liberation movements not spring up.
We could have just focused on this hemisphere.
Having said all that, once you commit to the war, commit to the damn war. No Queensbury rules.
Also, Winston was kind of like Trump in that he had no filter. He would come up with 50 revolutionary ideas before breakfast, and his staff would talk him down from 49 of them. Plus sometimes he was provocative just to remind people he could provoke. You can probably find a WSC quote about raping and eating enemy babies if you look hard enough. CC, JSM
Talking about morality. More civilians died in WW2, RCOII, by a factor of ten, than combatants. Most of those died of starvation. So tell me. What is moral about that?

Morality is a luxury in war.
If you are winning by enough you can partake.
But even then it is a crap shoot.
The worst typical events I saw were men coming out of the door at night with a gun and getting killed, then his wife coming out and picking the gun up. Sometimes they were pregnant.
Thankfully, the USA has signed a whole bunch of treaties and the US military has a whole set of regulations setting down "The morality" of war. I know all you tough guys wanted to macho soldiers and kill school girls and old women, but past Generals/Presidents have disagreed.
You'll have to join the IDF to get patted on the back for that.
