And if 2/3 of Afghan's are in poverty that's doesn't speak well for the USA/UK does it? We were there for 20 years! How many hundreds of $billions did we spend there? We know the President left in 2021 with a planeload of US cash.

The Taliban is forcing people in afghanistan to do a lot of things - because they believe in Islam. Sorry that's their religion. The Puritans used to force women to cover their hair with a hat and wear long dresses to cover their bare legs. The ol' meanies.

But I understand all the angst about women in Afghanistan. Life in the USA is perfect. No problems here. No crime, no homeless, nothing needs to be improved. No wonder the Bushes toss and turn at night over poor Maryam in Kabul.
So its perfectly natural we want to export the "American Way of life" to Afghanistan.
Do tourists get an exemption from the burka rule? Maybe the tour should include a visit to a stoning or amputation. Or perhaps a beheading before breakfast.
It's all fun and games until the Boomers die off, the GenXers get old, and the rest of them are left to actually fight for freedom and make their world work.

I watched a motorcycle vlogger, itchyboots I think, she drove through Astan, no burka, but you can tell that alot of the locals really had no idea she was a SHE when she was all kitted up. When they knew she was always followed by groups of men. She didn't seem to be quite comfortable in some situations for obvious reasons. Checkpoints seem to be quite chaotic.

From the article, it seems that the movement of these "influencers" are tightly controlled by their escorts, who are tour companies that coordinate with the Taliban. The Western women are allowed to show more that the locals, but I'm certain there is a limit.
BTW, are we still sending millions of dollars each month to the Taliban to keep them quiet? That was a bit of a controversy not too long ago.

And in Afghanistan? Maybe the problem was similar to Vietnam and other foreign adventures: what worked in the cities and with educated, modern urbanites didn't work so well in the countryside.

I did 3 rotations in Afghanistan. These posts are all just painful and deflating. Dillon doesn't know a damn thing either.

Here's the "smart take" on Afghanistan. Its 7000 air miles from Kabul to DC. We invaded in 2001. We should have left in 2006. We stayed 15 extra years - and accomplished nothing.
We need to stop sending our Soldiers and Marines to die in useless wars.

The content creators remind me of the 1992 book AN AFGHANISTAN PICTURE SHOW by (the otherwise mostly unreadable) William T Vollmann. It details his hare-brained 1982 journey to Afghanistan to fight alongside the mujahedeen against the Soviets. He’s lucky he survived.
