Said Joe Ho, one of the athletes who competed in the Beijing Hyrox, quoted in "Hyrox Athletes Are Refunded After Competitor Soiled Herself/The athlete, who went on to win, kept going after the incident at a global fitness event in Beijing, leading to an uproar" (NYT gift link).
[Joanna] Wietrzyk, an elite Hyrox athlete from Australia, had visible feces running down her legs as she did burpee broad jumps and weighted lunges at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing, alongside more than 100 fellow competitors — many of whom would need to pass through the same stations and use the same weights....

Dear google: “A burpee broad jump is a high-intensity full-body exercise combining a chest-to-floor burpee with an explosive horizontal forward jump.”
“Explosive,” eh? That word keeps slipping into the news of late. Paired with the rest of the story it suggests a sly editor at the NYT.
Dammit I wrote “der google” above.
At least she wasn’t sexualizing female athletes like Sidney Sweeney (and female athletes that pose for ESPN magazine and Sports Illustrated but those are progressive venues so it is ok).
Reminds me of “Uta Pooping.”
1. The Uta Pippig Incident (1996) German elite runner Uta Pippig won her third consecutive Boston Marathon. Her victory became legendary not just for her athletic performance, but for her perseverance through a severe medical emergency. What happened: Starting around the five-mile mark, Pippig began experiencing severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and menstrual bleeding.Despite visible blood and feces running down her legs, she refused to drop out. She overcame a 30-second deficit in the final miles to win the race. She received her winner's laurel wreath with a towel wrapped around her legs and later openly discussed her distress, attributing it to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Her openness helped destigmatize "runner's colitis" in the running community.
The Doorbell Camera Incident (2023) An unidentified marathon runner became a viral internet sensation. What happened: A homeowner living along the course route shared Ring doorbell camera footage showing a female runner stepping off the course, dropping her shorts, and defecating on their front lawn.
The Internet Debate: The clip sparked massive online debate. Some criticized the runner for trespassing and bypassing the official portable toilets provided by the Boston Athletic Association (BAA). Others—particularly fellow long-distance runners—defended her, citing the uncontrollable and sudden urgency caused by "runner's trots".Why does this happen? ("Runner's Trots")Gastrointestinal distress is incredibly common in endurance sports. Studies show that anywhere from 30% to 50% of marathon runners experience bowel issues during a race. It happens because:Ischemia: The body diverts oxygen-rich blood away from the stomach and intestines to power the leg muscles, causing abdominal cramping and sudden diarrhea.Mechanical Jostling: The physical up-and-down motion of running repeatedly jostles the organs, speeding up bowel movement.Stress: High levels of cortisol and pre-race anxiety drastically impact gut motility.
Can't hold her mud
We are living in the century of "Anything goes..."
This story makes me want to switch from Hyrox back to Oreos.
“Neither snow nor rancid Chow Mein nor heat nor deuce on a leg stays a Sheila from the swift completion of their appointed rounds"
Seems more like a Baby Ruth than a Hydrox.
I'm sure the pressure from the chi com madness had nothing to do with it. Culturally - women over there are on the bottom rung. another plus for the Bernie bank book.
Imagine in the old days.
The words “gymnasium” and “gymnastics” both come from the Greek word “gymnasion,” which refers to a place to train or exercise naked.
Two words: butt plug.
From 1956 to 1964; the most dominant female freestyle swimmer was all -around free spirit Dawn Fraser of Australia. (She was barred from swimming by the Australian Olympic organization after winning her third consecutive gold medal in the 100 freestyle for wearing the wrong swim suit). There was a story going around that she set one of her world records in the event while menstrual blood trickled out from under her suit and down her leg.
Hydrox fell behind Oreos in sales a century ago. After this they will never catch up
At a glance I thought this was a Hydrox story and it caught my interest. Then I realized I had misread it and it was merely about shit running down someone's leg during a large competition.
What?
We went from colorful Peter Max to crap running down a leg? Yes...Ann. You were right. Things are much gloomier now.
Burpees are the devil incarnate. Also, I feel, fairly useless.
Going forward, all marathons and hyrox competitions to be moved to the streets of San Francisco, for a better cultural fit.
She relinquished her world championship title because of the incident.
I think it demonstrates superior commitment, determination, and focus. Things that should not be punished.
Shit happens. What you gonna do?
Not what they mean by "eliminating the competition."
This has to end up as a block on Gutfeld. CC, JSM
An evolutionary process of elimination from the back... black hole... whore? h/t NAACP. What a burden h/t Obama of state and mind. #NoJudgment #NoLabels
"To add additional contamination to that suffering is not something that we are paying for.... Everyone could physically see that there was feces on her leg, but no one said anything.... It was just, like, business as normal."
As it should be. Having a good immune system is an important component of fitness, and putting it to the test should be part of the competition.
Hyrox is incredibly popular at my Gold's Gym. They keep adding classes - newest ones twice a week at 5AM. Nope.
Joanna's surname, per Grok --
"Wietrzyk is a Polish noun meaning a light, gentle, or pleasant breeze (a light wind).
It is the diminutive form of wiatr (“wind”), formed with the suffix -yk."
I Have been training for Hyrox and AthX style races. I haven't seen this race happen yet but I have watched several of these races.
I am thinking about competing in Nashville in December but I would have to scalp tickets.
These events are ~1 hour for elite athletes and the amount of training the pros put in is insane. The top 15 men and women are pushing 52-55 minute pro which is nutballs. A 1 hour open is my current goal.
I don't understand how this happens. There is no reason to take diuretics like weigh class based competitions. You over hydrate before you start because drinking during the event costs time. She might have over hydrated or had the flu I guess. Most people take shots of sugar during the event. I am pretty sure they banned caffeine in those shots.
The Burpee Broadjumps are a fucking wall. Only the 100 wall balls is worse imo.

Hyrox is interesting because they make their money as a participatory event rather than pushing pro athlete entertainment.
Thus they don't really treat their pros very well. They are in a constant back and forth with many of the pros.
Crossfit games are not participatory in the same way. They require elite olympic lifting which eliminates 99.9% of the population.
Hyrox is popular because almost anyone can finish it as long as they keep going and it builds the type of health that makes you live better and longer.
'Twas a shitty thing to do.
