So, a rundown from yesterday's primaries in the DSA Follies

Rashida Tlaib — WON. She easily secured the Democratic nomination in MI-12, taking roughly 64–68% of the vote.

Donavan McKinney — WON. He unseated two-term incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar in MI-13, winning 51.9% to 48.1% of the vote.

Cori Bush — LOST. Incumbent Rep. Wesley Bell defeated her comeback bid in MO-1 by a wide margin, roughly 59% to 37%.

Abdul El-Sayed won the Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate primary yesterday, narrowly defeating Rep. Haley Stevens by about 1 point ,

Here's an update on El-Sayed, that I found intereting: El-Sayed does not claim to be a DSA candidate. He's repeatedly rejected the label — telling CNN (July 12th) "I am not somebody who is a socialist. I believe in capitalism," and telling the Wall Street Journal "I'm not technically or practically DSA" (in mid-July).

CBS News reported on August 3rd that he 'doesn't do ideology': "The Democratic Socialists of America have not endorsed El-Sayed, but Sanders and other democratic socialists have been campaigning for him". He's described as a progressive Democrat with informal ties to DSA-aligned figures (all four "Squad" members endorsed him), not a DSA member or DSA-endorsed candidate.

Hmmmm. That's some fancy footwork there, pardner. I wonder how long détente will last. Will it be a divorce, or a honeymoon?

Monday, Aug. 3, 2026: Asked by CNN’s Kaitlan Collins about Thanksgiving, Francesca Hong said the holiday is “incredibly painful for many people in our communities” and that “views can evolve”.
Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026: More evolving. Hong told POLITICO’s Playbook podcast that Thanksgiving is actually her favorite holiday: “Yup. I don’t want to cancel it, I actually love it,” saying she celebrates with her family and in-laws.

Has anyone else tried X Money - Musk's next step in the X everything app? It functions like an online bank, but better. If you qualify, (X premium+ account, or direct deposit) your money earns 6% APR, and if you get the metal debit card you get 3% cash back on spending. If you have deposits over $250k, they spread your money around to different banks so you get more than the usual $250K FDIC insurance. That all functions behind the scenes and is invisible to you. Whatever activity happens in your account (deposits, spending) is immediately notified to you on your X account. So far I really like it, especially the 6% APR which nobody else even has as a teaser rate.

Aggie म्हणाले...

Vanguard has a fund that's all municipal bonds, and therefore tax-free: symbol VWALX. The 'Admiral' classification means you have to pony up at least $50,000 to buy into this fund initially. But it consistently earns over 4%, tax free - 4.37% as of 8/3. Low expense ratio, no fees, Morningstar gold-plated. Depending upon your income bracket, this can be helpful.

X money looks interesting, I'm going to check it out, thanks. Don't much like debit cards though.

Aggie म्हणाले...

I wonder how an FDIC-protected bank account can earn substantially higher than T-bills, though? Even the 30-year is just a little over 5% right now. Usually the best rates from banks are tracking the 10-year for reference, and it's around 4.7%

Lot's of talk about proportionate response as of late. Often in referral to Israel's response to Oct 7. A response, BTW, that I find mild compared to what they should do...

But when I was a career counselor and people were applying for commissioning programs I would give them the following scenario and questions.

You're on a mission with a wingman and he goes down. Alive and breathing, on a hill. Rescue choppers 20 minutes out. Squad of 4 enemy soldiers 10 mins out headed up the hill. Would you strafe and kill the 4? Everyone always said yes. Squad of 20 soldiers? Some hesitation in some before saying yes.

20 men from the nearby unfriendly village, not in uniform on the hill? Some would say no.

And last scenario- a mob of 100 men, women, children, and babes in arm from the nearby village, and several would say no.

A no to any of those scenarios and I wouldn't help them with processing their applications. The only correct answer is "Yes." You're responsible for the health and safety of you fellow airman, not the enemy, civilian or military.

Proportionate response in warfare gets soldiers and often civilians killed on the side practicing it.

Every muslim attacker in the USA, regardless of whether or not they were successful in killing others, should be hung shortly after conviction. Not doing it is why the attacks keep happening.

I have been (re-)reading Neil Sheehan's "A Bright Shining Lie".
I remember reading it a long time ago, and thinking that it was about John Vann. Which, it sort of is, but it's really about how completely absurd and disastrous the American approach to Viet Nam was. Sheehan was there in the early 60's, and it seems to have haunted him to the point that he made it his life's work to write this book. He wanted to understand how all this shit could have happened.
I sort of remember this stuff -- I was born in 1954, and I was a teen-ager while this was playing out, uneasily aware in a year or two, my government planned to draft me and insert me into this meat-grinder. I had no idea how completely bogus the whole policy was.

Munitions. Long story short… the Trump administration was fully aware that stockpiles of munitions were insufficient for even a fairly short war. It accelerated Biden-era efforts to rebuild stockpiles but those efforts need time to ripen. Nevertheless, Trump decided to initiate the war because he evidently believed it would end quickly. Now, we have a problem, because Iranians can read munition shortage charts just as easily as you can, and they understand leverage.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officially granted approval form Flusiva, an messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA)-based influenza vaccine developed by Moderna. Indicated for seasonal influenza prevention in adults aged 50 years and older, mFlusiva marks the world’s first commercially approved flu vaccine built on mRNA technology. The landmark approval ends the decades-long dominance of traditional egg-based flu vaccines and launches a new technological chapter for global influenza prevention and control.

Built on Moderna’s proven mRNA platform, mFlusiva eliminates the need for live virus cultivation and egg-dependent production. Instead, it utilizes synthetic mRNA molecules encoding key influenza antigen proteins, enabling drastically shortened production timelines, scalable manufacturing capacity, and rapid adaptation to evolving seasonal flu strains. This flexible production model solves the core pain points of slow iteration and poor strain compatibility inherent in traditional flu vaccines.

Bad phrasing or doomed from ignorance. As COVID taught us, the logistics choke points are not "bullets" per se. They are powder (just a few factories; all heavily secured and contracted to military and police first) and primers (ditto). If just bullets (versus complete cartridges), they must revert to black powder and flintlocks. It's better than nothing, but no match for a military or simple $500 drones.

So the SAVE Act has been in the news churn for months. It has a roughly 80% approval rate across the political spectrum. The roughly 20% complain about the burden of regaining lost documents or the cost of same. Given the energy behind the bill, people should just go ahead, save up if they need, and get the documents as best they can. No need to wait for a bill signing. So to summarize Hong's positions on Thanksgiving: (a) She' totally against it, wants it abolished, because it represents white supremacy, colonization, racism, and the celebration of a history of these tragedies that indelibly stain the American experiment, representing theft of land, genocide, disease; (b) We should stop celebrating it because it brings pain to too many people; (c) It's her favorite holiday, she celebrates it every year with her family.

I wonder if this is a political tactic that panders to the confirmation bias. After the hard ball, radical position is taken, a sympathetic journalist takes the hook and pitches the question as a softball prompt to roll out the modified, softer version, which generates outrage and therefore gains lots of attention for the hypocritical candidate, now priming disclosure of the the third position a few days later.

Any voter that is inclined to consider Hong in any way, will be predisposed to pick the position that brings the most comfort, and then add it into the (+) column of 'things I like about Hong', adding to the sense of an alignment of views. Pure political hackery of confirmation bias. Works best with a sympathetic media.

Is Anthropology Hopelessly Politicized?

The answer, not surprisingly, is yes.

In 2023, the AAA canceled an accepted panel at its annual conference, titled “Let’s Talk About Sex, Baby: Why Biological Sex Remains a Necessary Analytic Category in Anthropology.” The AAA said at the time that the panel would have harmed members’ “safety and dignity,” and that its premise contradicted “settled science.” The Vanderbilt report cited this incident to argue that when politically charged questions “are treated as settled by the scholarly community, the result is an illegitimate suppression of dissent.” You were elected president-elect of the AAA shortly after that incident. Do you regret today the fact that the AAA canceled that panel, or the justification that it gave for canceling it?

The head of the American Anthropological Association (AAA) is a professor at Princeton, Carolyn Rouse. She's famous for saying "Fuck free speech."

Her answer is kind of astounding to me. She not only insists that human sexuality is non-binary, she says that anybody who believes otherwise ought to be silenced in the classroom, or kicked out altogether.

She goes on to make some ugly abortion accusations ("I don't know, maybe you want to kill babies that aren't just XX presenting XX or XY presenting XY"). I can assure her that it's not pro-lifers who are saying that. What we insist is that in baby-making, there are only two sexes, male and female. And you can't make a baby without both of them. Human reproduction is very much binary, thank you very much.

Big Mike म्हणाले...

“ wildswan said...

It worked for Abigail Spanberger last November in Virginia.

Saint Croix म्हणाले...

Heterosexuality was long considered the "norm" of human sexuality, because we are the reproducers. And obviously reproduction is important to humanity. It's how we stay alive as a species. So it's important to anthropology.

We can, of course, broaden our concepts of normality to include many types of sexuality. But you've probably gone too far from the norm when you conclude that there is no biological basis for sexual categories. It's how we reproduce! You need a man and a woman!

And I know "non-binary" is the fad and "binary" is old hat. Nonetheless, I remain a speaker of science when I say that I know how babies are made. To pretend otherwise is to be a joke of a professor. Regardless of how smart you are. You can be smart and still have your head up your ass. (Which is biologically impossible, by the way, just a fun insult).
