Souvenirs.

"Officers said they observed Mr. Thiers and Mr. Carreno reach their hands into the water, peel pieces of blue sealant off and pull them out of the water, according to arrest records. Officers also found a piece of the reflecting pool liner in Ms. Dennison-Gibby’s purse, the records showed."

From "Three More People Charged With Damaging Reflecting Pool/The three individuals face misdemeanor charges of causing damage worth less than $1,000. Experts have said that the problems could have been caused by the pool’s makeover" (NYT).

Experts say the makeover put the liner in her purse? I’ve had enough of experts.

baghdadbob म्हणाले...

An example of the "Broken Windows" theory of policing, made famous by former NYPD commissioner Bratton. If you tolerate and ignore small crimes, bigger crimes follow.

"Experts have said that the problems could have been caused by the pool’s makeover"

And by "pool's makeover", the experts mean TDS.

Saint Croix म्हणाले...

That's a bottom story of the day.

I prosecuted 300 misdemeanors a day when I was an assisted D.A. There are so many damn misdemeanors in the world, you would not believe it.

Are they trying to portray the Republicans as too tough on crime? Or are they trying to warn Democrats don't vandalize the reflecting pool, it's bad optics for Team Blue?

I look forward to more NYT scoops on misdemeanors in Washington D.C.

Reflecting pool disrespecting fools.

Kai Akker म्हणाले...

Throw the stinkin book at them! They wrecked this thing, taking two or three strips of material out of the pool. We all know Trump can do no wrong, it is the fault of these devilish vandals and Democrats.

Dave Begley म्हणाले...

Give these people the full J6 treatment. Many of those who were sent to jail didn't damage any property.

Temujin म्हणाले...

Who wouldn't want a piece of the reflecting pool liner to carry around in their purse? I mean, you never know when you'll find yourself at a cocktail party with DSA members.

Spiros म्हणाले...

I think Trump and Company is looking for vandalism in the wrong place. Go further back. Take a look at the nutcases who applied the pool liner or, more likely, handled it in the factory. I think someone tampered with the pool liner before it hit the ground. Heck, maybe the paint came from a hostile third world country like China?

Just as an aside. There is a tendency at this forum to conflate political opinions that you disagree with with mental illness. I don't think this is a viable political strategy. An example? Yes, think of all the time nutty liberals are dismissed as suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome”. These are cheap insults. I think we can do better than just dismissing all these people as crazy.

Aggie म्हणाले...

I'd like to see each one of these fools ridiculed and smacked with the same outrageous penalties as were heaped on the J6 protestors that didn't really do anything more than stroll in, where invited. Not the violent offenders, of course. But there are still some that are defending the persecution of harmless grandmas using SWAT teams.

I would also like to know why the American Flag Blue coating is being so easily removed. There must be a reason. Why not cover both stories? Why isn't the TDS media telling us why the coating is peeling? I would have thought this would be big news.

Iran has driven the US Navy from the Persian Gulf. Could Trump do the same with the algae in the Reflecting Pool?

In Germany back in the say I’m sure there were poet ding dongs that knew they had it all figured out, too…

Give these people the full J6 treatment.

Complete disagreement. Do not follow the Democrats down the shit path. Do not legitimize the fucked up Biden administration by over-punishing dummies who got too agitated. Holy shit, Begley.

Kevin म्हणाले...

So the Dems have finally found a makeover they don't like?

I thought they were the pro-makeover party.

Randomizer म्हणाले...

How many of these morons are there?

They should all be air-tagged upon release so we can track the stupid.

I googled one at random. The lady who put the incriminating evidence in her purse is a board-certified veterinary radiologist. That's very difficult. She used to have a good brain.

A misdemeanor may not damage her prospects, but the DA could have thrown the book at her for damaging a national historic landmark.

Over-educated, no-skill malcontents want to burn it all down, but it's more troubling to see high quality people risk burning themselves down. I don't get it.

Howard म्हणाले...

Failing liner was an attractive nuisance. No normal person could keep themselves from peeling up the already peeling liner that was incompetently placed on an underprepared surface by a corrupt contractor who had contributed millions to the Trump campaign.

It says another issue that keeps the little people squabbling over literal scraps. I seem to remember something about straining out the gnats while letting camels pass.

Not crazy, irrational.

"No normal person could keep themselves from peeling up the already peeling liner...."

Ones that were raised correctly could. Not everyone remains an impulsive child.

boatbuilder म्हणाले...

If they had charged the nonviolent J6 tourists with misdemeanors, we probably wouldn't have people demanding that people who grabbed peeling vinyl souvenirs be locked up.

Are there no cameras on the mall? If I were a lawyer defending these cases, I would ask the court to order the government to disclose all video or still photographic records from the date the crime is alleged to have occurred.

Also I wonder whether the officers who searched Ms. Dennison-Gibby's purse had a warrant or at least probable cause.

boatbuilder म्हणाले...

I also would argue that anyone grabbing peeling pool liner after it started peeling was in fact just grabbing souvenirs, almost by definition.

If you had a loose window screen on your house, and someone came by, tore it out and took it home, would it matter why it was loose? Would that be a crime or not? If you take a random rock from any national monument, it's a crime. People have been arrested, fined and even jailed out here in NV for taking a few rocks from the desert, or sometimes just moving them and leaving them there.

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

Simple question: Would you do it? If not why not?

Lazarus म्हणाले...

When you go to the Petrified Forest, the park rangers tell you not to take away any pieces of petrified wood. I wonder how many people who had never planned to take any souvenirs decided to do so after hearing the warning.

Supposedly, "souvenirs" came into common usage during WWI and the fighting on the Western Front, replacing the older English word "keepsake."

Which is a bullshit myth. I was personally in D.C. the day after the annual March for Life (this was in 2002 or so) and the mall was trashed with abandoned protest signs.

I am wondering who gets to qualify as an "expert" and "worry" about something?

I am an expert in many areas and arguably the "world's leading expert" in a couple.

On the other hand, the only thing I know about pools is how to get wet in them.

So do I get to qualify as an expert and wonder, publicly, aboout things like the reflecting pool? Or do I need some pool expertise.? They never tell us, do they. Just anonymous experts in whatever their expertise is in. And to people as stupid as many presstitutes seem to be, how much expertise is required? My 9 year old granddaughter can make cookies that I think are pretty good. I do admit to bias. Would that ability be enough to make her a "baking expert" in the mind of a WaPo reporter?

Sadly, I worry it would.

“ Hard to prove damages if already peeling/broken.”

Not really necessary. You can get enhanced penalties sometimes with a lot of property destruction. But tearing up a bit of the lawn n8ng very likely is sufficient.

Normally, this probably wouldn’t be worth persecuting. But the perps almost assuredly did it to embarrass Trump. That made it political and personal. With the Acting AG and the USA breathing down their necks, prosecutors are going to put someone experienced on the case. With tacit understand that guilty verdicts are expected. I expect that most, if not all, of the perps are going to take plea deals, probably stipulating that their actions were intentional and maybe even designed to harm Trump. That’s because the alternative to several $100s in fines, as a legal bill of $1,000s, and a possibility of jail time.

This is the height of irresponsible government and a big black mark on the DOJ. Charging individual citizens with a crime to justify Trump's claim of vandalization to cover his incompetency is in itself a crime. This is just one of many, many ways the current administration makes itself look ridiculous.

After Hearn's case is dismissed, I hope he turns around and sues the Trump administration, Park Service and National Guard officers involved, and Jeanine Pirro for false arrest and defamation.
