My twitter feed is full of people who bring up Jan 6 every chance they get arguing that COVID is ancient history and it's time to move on.

In the earliest days of COVID, when we didn't yet know what we were in for, Fauci appears to have lied about what he actually believed *at the time* about masks, telling the public that they were not effective *in order to preserve what he thought would be a short supply for healthcare workers.* That's the reason he gave later, when he changed his public position and urged everyone to wear masks (I've lost track now, if I ever had the track to begin with, of what his diaries reveal him to have believed by *that* time), and it was not a totally indefensible act.
What was totally indefensible was to lie about what he believed COVID's origin was, such that those *saying exactly what he actually believed* were ridiculed, marginalized, even fired from their jobs. Why would he do that? And inflating the fatality rate, when he knew by then, first, that it was at least ten times lower than he was claiming, and second, that deaths were almost entirely limited to the same groups who were vulnerable to any flu, in order to keep things shut down - what's the defense of that? And making public pronouncements about "social distancing" that - no matter how he dances now to avoid his responsibility then - were implemented as policy with the force of law behind them on the strength of *his celebrity*, while he himself was living a life as unfettered as he pleased, just like the execrable Newsom.
Fauci did an end around to fund the development of COVID after Obama (of all people!) shut down his crazy “research” in the U.S. And he funded the development in a strategic enemy of the U.S., China. What was this obsession with developing a biological weapon? Why did Fauci become obsessed with this?

What always struck me as odd was Fauci’s supposed credentials as a “scientist”. MDs typically are not trained that way. Ph.Ds in various social sciences are trained that way along with biostatisticians. They usually do the science stuff for MDs, especially in the Pharma industry.

I don’t think anybody believes that Fauci will pay any price for killing 18 million people. The futility of extracting any kind of price for his criminal acts is what is infuriating people. It’s commonly thought that the Nuremberg trials started a thorough campaign of de-Nazification, but they did not. Both the U.S.S.R. and the U.S. decided after minimal prosecutions that they needed the surviving Nazi bureaucrats and scientists to prop up German society and as soldiers in their side in the Cold War. The notion that the lab leak theory and the wet market theory are on equal footing is painfully naive, or disingenuous in the extreme. The virus appeared in the city, in the *neighborhood*, of a research lab performing exactly the experiments which would have created it; using protocols described in detail by the researchers of that lab in grant proposals (proposals that were rejected for being too dangerous). The virus has properties that the end product of those procedures would have produced.
The lab leak theory is the default explanation. Any other theory carries the burden of displacing it with overwhelming evidence.

Proximity and possibility are not proof, that standard applies equally to both the lab-leak and wet-market hypotheses. The wet-market theory is not based simply on being “7.5 miles away”; it is based on early case clustering around the Huanan market, epidemiological links among some of the earliest known cases, and environmental samples from the market containing viral material. Those findings do not prove the origin by themselves, but they are evidence that must be considered.
Likewise, a research laboratory in the same city is a relevant fact, but location alone does not establish causation. The origin question should be decided by evidence, not by political allegiance.
Much of the MAGA outrage over this issue appears tied less to the scientific details and more to the political narrative around COVID, distrust of institutions, and a desire to assign blame. Those are understandable political debates, but they are separate from the question of what the available evidence actually shows.

You do not have a cursory understanding of how medical research is conducted. That Fauci is named as one of many research co-authors only means that he sponsored the research, not that he actually conducted it. The research was conducted by actual scientists.

I can't believe no one has commented on jim5301's "Fauci is a real scientist" stat yet! He authored 1400 papers - over what time period? Over his scientific career, perhaps? That's, say, 65 years at the outside, if he started being included as an "author" when he was a sophomore lab assistant (not unheard of).
That's an average of over 21 papers per year, year-in and year-out! Two a month!
That stat does nothing to "prove" that Fauci is a "real scientist." It would certainly suggest, though, that he was a publicity hound from early on, since it means that every single paper produced in every lab with which he was ever connected included him as an "author."

Fauci's number of papers is remarkably telling. They indicate he had an inordinate level of intrusion into the work funded by his agency. Frankly, I've never seen anything like it.
While it might be gratifying to see a comeuppance for the poison dwarf, it would appear he's just the point man for a much broader effort. The real outrage is that too many people were willing to bow to authority without questioning it, and were willing to accept that such authority can exist unchallenged, beyond the reach of simple accountability.
The lesson was always there for those that were willing to observe it and act accordingly. If more people had stood up to it in real time instead of panicking, it was a gambit that never would have withstood the scrutiny - if scrutiny had so insisted, that assertions be accompanied by facts and then a coherent justification.
One of the reasons that people are so angry right now is that they are finally realizing that they were played for chumps, and even worse, that they were played so easily. The proof has been laid out in front of them, in Fauci's love letters to himself. What will happen next time, when the next Trump comes around and must be stopped at all costs? We now have a handle on how far 'all costs' actually goes.
Will people question authority, not only question it, but demand answers first and foremost before compliance? I doubt it. The surveillance state has a lot of flex. There are still plenty of people that lost their jobs and their careers because they had questions. And we haven't resolved the problem of derangement syndromes yet. The ability to cultivate these things, these poisonous social dynamics, and breathe life into them using social media tools is a new talent, and this current one is still going strong. I have yet to see a single one that didn't invoke "Trump" very early, if not immediately, revealing that tribalism is really the basis for it. No argument penetrates that. Authorship standards are generally based on actual contributions, not simply control over funding. As the P.I. on the grant that subcontracted the Wuhan Lab, Daszak had a legal right to the lab's records of their experiments (as did NIH). When NIH pulled Daszak's funding a couple of years into this saga, one of the stipulations to resume funding was that Daszak obtain those records from the Wuhan Lab, and to hand them over to NIH. Daszak never did.
I remember that Covid was no big deal, no need to ban flights from China, no need to cancel Spring Break plans; then after the Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations were over, it was "14 days to lower the curve".

Absence of evidence is NOT evidence of absence. This is particularly true and anthropology and paleontology where the number of preservation sites is so exceedingly rare that what we understand about past life forms is severely limited by what happened to be preserved. It's not even the tip of the iceberg. The fact that there is no evidence of a lab leak does not mean that there was no lab leak. The fact that we have almost no evidence from the lab is indicative that somebody has something to hide. It's not like people were taking notes at the wet market.

After years of investigation, no direct evidence has emerged showing that SARS-CoV-2 was created in or escaped from a laboratory. That does not prove a lab accident was impossible, but it means the claim remains unproven. Likewise, the early evidence pointing toward a zoonotic origin—such as the concentration of early cases around the Huanan market and genetic evidence consistent with animal-to-human spillover—cannot simply be dismissed because no one was “taking notes” at the market.

When I was an inside patent attorney for a major electronics/IC company, we had a saying - that VPs were presumptively (we were lawyers) not patent Inventors.. They inevitably were big egoed PhDs, and very often were listed on the papers published (after submission of the patent appellations, of course). We took that presumption of non-inventorship very seriously. We would interview every potential inventor very closely and would document everyon’s claim to inventorship. And inevitably find that the VPs had provided funding and high level approval and authorization. Why did we do that? Because we knew that false inventorship could invalidate any patents we were trying to assert. Why did we know that? Because that is what we did when companies were asserting big ticket patents against us. First level supervisors occasionally qualified as inventors. Almost never anyone higher than that. But we often found the entire management chain, even up to their VP, on the papers published.

What eliminates the natural origin theory is that the infections and deaths did not originate in the horseshoe bat cave area 300 miles south of Wuhan and expand in a circle in all directions. There were no reports of unknown pneumonia type illnesses on a line from the caves to Wuhan as the virus became more potent as it mutated. The disease was actually centered on Wuhan and radiated outward from there, even by air travel to other countries. As when Italians visited Wuhan.
So the disease went from Wuhan to the bat caves, not in the other direction. People at the bat caves area got covid later.
Unlike monkey pox, hiv, and sars 2002 there has never been an animal found in nature with an intermediate form of covid that was mutating toward original covid strains. For the other viruses, scientists routinely find them in nature at their wild locations.

You this around the word “proof” a lot. I suspect that you are using it in the way that scientists do. Relativity has not been proven, but every one of Einstein’s predictions that have been seen and not refuted increases the likelihood.
But high correlation can be assumed to be causation in the courts and in the eyes of the public. Innocent People go to jail and prison every day as a result of mere correlation. It’s often called “circumstantial evidence”. The standard of proof required is “beyond a reasonable doubt”. Because of the confusion here, jury instructions almost invariably have an extensive definition of that term.
The Furin Cleavage site mentioned by Yancey is important for a number of reasons. It’s how the virus attaches to cells, and thus enters them. It attaches to ACE-2 receptors. And best to HUMAN ACE-2 receptors. Essentially that means that the novel portion of the virus is tuned to humans. Moreover, it means that the SARS-2 virus in other species, with the Human ACE2 receptor optimized difference very likely jumped from humans this other species, and not the other way around. It is highly unlikely that the initial jump went the other way, because it would be optimized for that other species. That’s how mutations work - mutated genes mostly only survive and flourish if they are beneficial, or at worst, neutral to the survival of the gene (and organization it is contained in, whether virus, species, etc), in competition with unmutated genes.
Interestingly, the new genetic code appears to be surrounded by what appear the be (likely CRISPR) gene insertion tags. Also, interestingly, patent applications by a vaccine company appear to have been filed a couple days before the encoding of the virus’s sequence was published. It’s almost as if the inventors involved knew, in advance, had inside information about what the new genetic code was.
To this day I am dumbfounded that Rich's paymaster are so invested in covering for Fauci, Daszak, et al. What's their motivation?
