Back when I was a pack a week or two smoker, I had the greatest craving for one after I would finish a morning run before work.
Seeing smoking as seductive is a fetish.
There is nothing seductive, beautiful, pretty, or even remotely attractive about smoking. Whether tobacco or wacky weed or anything else.
I have a part-time outdoor job on busy roads and it is my unvalidated observation that smoking is coming back, not only inside cars, but even in passing pedestrians.
You see cigarettes in movies a lot for the purpose of giving the actor something to do with his/her hands. Celebs in professional photos holding cigs is probably the same thing - I wouldn't assume, for example, that Dua Lipa actually smokes based on a simple photo (although a little digging suggests that she is at least an occasional smoker in real life).
Just finished watching the last season of "The Bear" in which everybody is seemingly smoking at all times. I was in the restaurant business years ago and yes, back then we all smoked. A lot. But I figured those days were long gone. And maybe they had declined substantially, but if that show is any indication, everything old is new again.
It's too bad we never learn.
Ick. My Dad (and some relatives) smoked when I was young and I always thought it was revolting.
Martin Mull had the best cigarette jokes. He smoked Vantage brand and the filter was made with a cavity in it so you could not see the brown tar spot. He said once that he liked Vantage because he could put his tongue in the little hole.
When I joined the Air Force almost everybody smoked. If you had a desk, you usually had an ash tray on it otherwise the ashes would end up on your floor. I flew on RC 135s with a crew of between 25-30 people, maybe five would be non-smokers. But times change. I smoked for 17 years, quitting was the hardest thing I have ever done.
I see a carton of Marlboros are about $100. Yikes! My wife and I were both two pack a day smokers, Can't see how people afford it anymore.
It always amazed me in the Army when after a hard run that had me looking around for an oxygen mask, so many other guys’ first impulse was to put smoke in their lungs. CC, JSM
I quit for good in 1998 when I was 43. I wish I had never taken up the habit.
I’m seeing a lot more smoking on TV, often among the young and the cool. A big change from when a cigarette was a sign that the character was bad, or at least deeply flawed.
I think it’s a good thing; we worry far too much about always making the healthy choice.
@ JSM: In the early decades of the Tour de France, it was quite common to see riders puffing on cigarettes during the grueling race. While it seems completely counterintuitive today, this practice was backed by the medical beliefs and cultural norms of the time.
Riders and trainers in the 1920s and 1930s believed that smoking actually "opened up" the lungs, enlarged the bronchial tubes, and improved breathing for steep mountain climbs. Some athletes also used cigarettes to calm their nerves, suppress appetite, and even to help clear their throats of the thick dust kicked up on unpaved roads.

My parents both smoked, I hated it. Smoking killed them- I wish they had made the healthy choice.
