"How the Reflecting Pool Turned Green.... Bulky 'nanobubbler' machines were carted off ahead of a promotional event for President Trump’s Ultimate Fighting Championship birthday party."

The NYT reports.

The decision to remove the water-treatment systems, which has not previously been reported, was one of several missteps that have plagued Mr. Trump’s $16.4 million renovation of the Reflecting Pool. There have been no-bid contracts, peeling strips of waterproof coating in Mr. Trump’s handpicked shade of “American flag blue,” and even a dead duck floating in the water (though it is not clear if the renovation had anything to do with the duck’s demise). In recent days, the water has become clear again, reflecting the sky and the surrounding monuments. The temporary nanobubblers have been replaced with more discreet, permanent purification systems. Still, the Park Service plans to drain the pool again soon to fix the peeling coating....

Typical NYT writing in so many ways. "No-bid contracts" are bad because certainly a lower cost contractor would have done better. National Park Service confirmed yesterday that “knives and or razors” were used to cut the sealant and then it was pulled away. Today it was reported that the NOS will need to fully drain it to repair the vandalism to the reflecting pool. Which is all to say, of COURSE the flailing NYT frames the story today around the bubblers that were working perfectly fine until the chemical, biological and physical assaults by democrats and socialists on the public monument. Those were not “missteps” at all. The headline “How it turned green” could have been a useful lesson instead of an attempt at misdirection… again.

On May 4, 2026, Trump said of the liner: “It’s very strong. You couldn’t — if you had a knife — I don’t want to give anybody ideas… If you had a knife, you can’t even cut it, so strong, so powerful.”

Apparently, he did give people the idea. So, I guess it's his fault. Or do you want to say, because he said it, it must be true, so it's not vandalism.

Leland म्हणाले...

"The temporary nanobubblers have been replaced with more discreet, permanent purification systems."

Oh, so they got rid of the temporary solution and replaced it with a permanent solution that works. One would think that would be the headline.

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ म्हणाले...

Trump ordered the beast and security detail to drive over the surface before the spray was fully cured thus the long cut like evidence caused by the motorcade. Perhaps we can add vandal to Trump's other negative nicknames?

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"Has anyone provided any evidence that vandalism did occur?"

The cuts themselves are evidence. They've been inspected by, I think, some kind of expert who sees the cuts as knife cuts.

If there are knife cuts in the liner, then some person or persons used a knife to do the cutting. That's an inference. And we can also infer that anyone who did that was doing it out of vandalism. There was no good reason for anyone to cut the liner.

What's the alternative inference? The liner just immediately began splitting up on its own? Again, the key question is whether these are cuts made by a blade of some kind.

Freder Frederson म्हणाले...

Apparently, he did give people the idea. So, I guess it's his fault. Or do you want to say, because he said it, it must be true, so it's not vandalism.

No the pertinent question is was he lying then or lying when he claimed there was a 200, 250, 350 foot gash in the liner (which, he has provided no evidence to back up his accusations of vandalism)

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ म्हणाले...

Lots of “the election was rigged and stolen” vibes in Trump’s claim that his failures on the Reflecting Pool are the result of “vandalism.” Pretty similar playbook -- just keep repeating the absurd lie, get Fox, Newsmax and right-wing podcasters to run with it, and the cult buys it.

Trump is probably going to release that video today showing the person who cut the 350’ gash in the Reflecting Pool to sabotage it. The Department of the Interior and the DC US Attorney have probably just been too busy to release it but I’m sure we will see it now because Trump doesn’t lie.

It’s almost like driving your really heavy armored presidential limo on fresh sealant and then dumping thousands of gallons of hydrogen peroxide in the pool was a bad idea.

Pouring hydrogen peroxide into the pool where the sealant hasn’t properly cured attacks and breaks down the polymer chains of the paint — causing it to bubble and lose adhesion. Thus peeling.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

So this was the police report, and you can value their expertise in observing things like this however you want. Their description is affected by seeing also that "approximately 70 fence post tops were thrown into the pool." That raises the inference that vandals were there, doing damage. What happened to the liner looked like cuts to the people who also saw the post tops but maybe it broke apart on its own and not by cutting.

Maybe the 70 post tops were not *thrown* into the pool but somehow got lofted without human involvement.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

Trump's sloppiness in referring to what happened does not change what happened, but it seems to make you either not care that something happened or want to shift the subject onto Trump's imperfect speech patterns.

Aggie म्हणाले...

But we were reliably told a few days ago that the algae bloom was caused by leftover water in the pipework, that was flushed when the reflecting pool was first refilled. And then we were reliably informed by CNN that the phosphate levels in the water were suspiciously elevated, causing the algae bloom. Then it was declared that, by gosh they filled it with water from the river, of course resulting in an algae bloom, just like before. And then, it appeared the nanobubblers were working after all, and the water is clear enough to see the vandal's damage.

It's almost like you can't believe the reports. But the 'you people' folks will believe anything, according to those who say 'you people' Who's lying?

One thing we learn is the 2010-2012 renovation drove pilings to bedrock after a century of sinking. But they switched to water from the Potomac estuary rather then the municipal water of yore. Water not purified and brought along the nutrients and phosphates that promote algae growth.

Maybe even higher amounts due to the 200+million gallons of raw sewage dumped into the Potomac upstream 6 months ago. The nature of a tidal estuary is that the tide goes out and the tide comes in with slack periods where nutrients and phosphates may settle out.

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

I've asked Grok this question 3 times over the last few weeks. And got the same answer every time, despite multiple people here saying the opposite.

Grok: "Multiple sources, including reporter Emily Miller (who cited four confirmed sources), reported it was refilled with city water (potable/municipal supply) rather than the usual Tidal Basin source. This was reportedly chosen for clearer, cleaner water ahead of summer events like America 250 celebrations."

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

I've had a lot of experience with phosphate-caused algae blooms, which produce an unusually vivid green color and chlorine resistant algae. I don't see how municipal water which does have some phosphate added would have the high level reportedly found so quickly after being filled. Bird droppings will get you there, and so will 20 lbs. of fertilizer, but the birds would take longer than this took.

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

Also, the peeling of the coating could be a defective application, but that would also take much longer to produce so much delamination as we saw in just a few days. There were clearly visible knife cuts to the foam sealant that have no other explanation besides vandalism.
