The New York Times brings harrowing forebodings: "Where Might the Iran War Hit Your Wallet? Start With Raspberries. It takes a lot of fuel to produce this delicate fruit, which can be a sensitive barometer as oil costs rise."
Raspberries are the divas of fresh produce.... They do best stacked lightly in refrigerated trucks cooled and powered with diesel fuel. Even on a plane, the berries must be refrigerated. All this makes them one of the most fuel-intensive items in the produce aisle. And they bear a message from the near future: The Iran war is likely to grow your grocery bill. Raspberries were already expensive, but the wholesale price of fresh berries has doubled since January, according to federal Agricultural Marketing Service reports. At a Whole Foods Market in Atlanta on Tuesday, a six-ounce plastic container of organic raspberries cost nearly $8. That’s about 20 cents a berry....
You know what you could do in support of the war effort? If the price of fresh raspberries doubles, eat half as many raspberries. Or don't buy fresh raspberries when they are out of season. Be more of a locavore and pick something that is in season or buy frozen berries. They're fine in a smoothie. I mean this war with Iran has been going on since the Carter administration and we're currently very heavily committed to forcing it to end decisively. Can't you handle this insanely minuscule raspberry problem? Who is this out-of-season-berry-munching Whole-Foods-shopping lady who won't contribute?

I say this in the most manly way possible: I love a good raspberry daiquiri. And women, I love women too. But also raspberry daiquiris.
Is the price of raspberry berets doubling, too? Prince would want to know.
The last two weeks I've actually gotten an unexpected deal on Raspberries. Normally they are around $2 or $2.50 for a little 6 or 8 oz. container. But the last two times I've been to Woodman's I've gotten them for 99 cents a container. I will say the price of dried apricots has gone up almost double though.
If it takes that much energy to put a raspberry on the shelf, then why isn't The Times pressing us to stop eating raspberries altogether?
For the environment!
We've picked a lot of raspberries in the in-law's truck garden over the years, and while they are quite tasty, it takes a real commitment to pick enough for a few pies or dessert.
I will say I adjusted to my own personal grocery store circumstances by not purchasing dried apricots and buying extra raspberries. Raspberries and apricots is a tastier dilemma than guns and butter.
I’ll do my part and also be colorblind. Blackberries and blueberries are just fine with me. But this drags on, I can go without them too.
Brazos dewberries, a native vine found in the lowlands, are blooming right now.
Short video update on operations at Day 27, at the BattleSwarm blog.
Breaking: NBC just reported that the fresh raspberry ration has been increased from 20 berries to 11.
For some reason I only get the videos from previous threads.
Anyway I have a vision of Humphrey Bogart and the strawberries.
"Rasberries are the divas of fresh produce...the wholesale price of fresh berries has doubled..."
Do they have any idea how out of touch they are? At all?
BTW two days ago I bought a package of 30 eggs for $3.99 at my local Acme grocery store. Remember when the price of eggs was a yuge deal?
Now that we are retired and rural, I am in the process of installing a small chicken coop and run, because my lovely bride has wanted to have chickens for 35 years.
I figure that amortized over a decade or so the cost of all this will work out to less than $10.00 a dozen eggs. Not including the price of aspirin and whiskey to counteract the effect of digging post holes and trenches, setting posts and wire, etc.
Bullshit been berry berry good to NYT…
NYT's manifest destiny since Trump arrived: Stroke anxious blue city people and validate their trivial first-world problems.
The Gulf states say "Iran shot missles at us, destroyed our economy, and killed many people." Israel says "Iran has its sights set on creating nuclear weapons and then killing all of us." China says "Ooops, we have an energy issue and need to rethink that Taiwan/South China Sea venture."
NYT...the high price of raspberries limits options in Michelin restaurants.
boatbuilder said...I figure that amortized over a decade or so the cost of all this will work out to less than $10.00 a dozen eggs.
Are you including the chicken you'll get to eat at the end of its egg-laying life? (Unless the neighbor's cat gets there first.)
Its a silly fishwrap
Please Baby, Go All the Way.
"Please, go all the way..."
When Carmen announced his public support for Donald Trump in 2019, he faced wide backlash and even accused Twitter of “rolling off followers, and suppressing my tweets.”
Under sharp criticism and threatened boycotts of his music, he tweeted:
“If you want to hate me, just know this. I love the USA, I support our brave military men and women, I support the police and firefighters, I support our President and the First Lady, I believe in civility, and I do not want to live in a Socialist country. That is what I believe.”
We were talking about the space between us all
And the people who hide themselves behind a wall of illusion
Never glimpse the truth, then it's far too late, when they pass away
We were talking about the love we all could share
And we were talking about Raspberries.
“I mean this war with Iran has been going on since the Carter administration and we're currently very heavily committed to forcing it to end decisively.”
No it hasn’t and no we’re not. But I’ll play along with the raspberry boycott for the good of the country. Full disclosure - if I cut my raspberry consumption in half, half of zero is zero.
How did the raspberry become a name for the rude noise one makes with one's mouth?
@boatbuilder, just make sure your bride brushes up on vent inspection, pasty butt, and vent gleet.
This is not unusual for the New York Times. I remember hardship stories from them in the past about things like families not being able to go to Halloween haunted houses more than once or mother's foregoing purchasing designer jeans for themselves so they could buy their children Christmas presents. They live in an alternate universe.
Just like The Vault Dweller, we paid 99 cents for raspberries just yesterday. Could the NYT have picked a less consequential and more poorly timed example of how we are all suffering for this endless war imposed on us?
1). I despise the unnecessary adjective in writing. It’s pretentious and a distraction. “Delicate fruit”. Eye roll.
2) Whole Foods—the place that peels an orange and puts it in a plastic container so it can charge more. Yes, that is a perfect place to gather an anecdote that illustrates a broad market.
BTW - try the Warren Zevon version of Raspberry Beret - it rocks out more than the original.
And we need undocumented migrant farm workers to pick those raspberries! Otherwise, Americans won't!
The raspberry patch out back (n/k/a "Victory Garden") grows with abandon each year. It is manifestly expansionist, crowding out the indigenous vines. If October is warm and sunny then we get two harvests per year.
I have a rural property and looking for a nature barrier between me and a neighbor’s field. I am planting wild raspberries because they provide a thick barrier that draws wildlife.
So this is what war reporting by the NTY looks like in 2026?
A female food reporter in a flak jacket and helmet typing away about produce prices in her cubicle on Eighth Avenue?
Where was the NYT's concerns about inflation when the Fed increased the money supply by 20% and Biden went on an insane spending surge?
“ A female food reporter in a flak jacket and helmet typing away about produce prices in her cubicle on Eighth Avenue?”
And walked to WF down the street to pick up some grab and go lunch and considered that “journalism in the field”
"How did the raspberry become a name for the rude noise one makes with one's mouth?"
I think you know and if you don't you can figure it out. What sounds like what and what looks like what?
"Pain and sacrifice?" YGBSM (Wild Weasel motto.)
Gasoline prices are going down again around here.
My wife hates raspberries. She won't let me bring them in the house.
I just bought six ounces (170g) of raspberries for 2.99, and a pint (551g) of blueberries for 5.29. Not organic, which I only buy when it's all that's available. (Organic, I mean, which I consider largely a scam.)
"What sounds like what and what looks like what?"
I guess I don't know what's what.
You know, there was certainly a time, when your subscribing to and reading the NYT so the rest of us didn't have to was useful and appreciated. The NYT was a skillful and influential participant in American culture and politics, and employed many good reporters. There was even a time when the NYT had some good columnists, although it was many, many years ago. None in this century.
“BTW - try the Warren Zevon version of Raspberry Beret - it rocks out more than the original.”
Or just eat a big dish of beef chow mein.
Sounds to me like giving up raspberries would be a great way to fight climate change. Eat local grown ones, but if they need mechanically refrigerated transportation, just let them go.
This past weekend, raspberries at Woodman's were just 99 cents for a double-clamshell container. I bought one expecting they were rotting rapidly -- why else would they be so cheap? -- and was pleasantly surprised that they lasted 2 days.
If raspberries are too expensive for you, either forgo them or plant some canes.
Ah, Les fraises et Les framboises
Du bon vin j'en ai bu!
Oh no. Now Trump is going to take our raspberries? Is it even possible for Democrat media whores to be more fatuous.
I’ve been advised that General Ahmad Vahidi, who was appointed as commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on March 1, 2026, is now enjoying his 72 grapes.

The difference between the Vietnam war and the Iran war, is that Trump knew how to get out of the Vietnam war. 🤣
“ I think you know and if you don't you can figure it out. What sounds like what and what looks like what?”
I think raspberries look like a clitoris, but then what dosen’t.
In Chicago i pay $3.00 for a 6oz box or about 18 berries per gallon of gas
Ditch the Raspberries and eat blackberries instead. Yes, lets pick our way to victory.
Tosa Guy: be careful what you wish for. What type of wildlife would you like? I have 15 acres with a whole lot of blackberries. Copperhead snakes like to hide in them to kill the rodents and birds that eat them. Scraping raspberry bird poo off your car is part of the deal, also coping with drunk birds, squirrels, mice, rats, racoons, and voles who get hooked on the rotting fruit. Bears near you? My cattledog who is a fruitarian except for murder and kibble luckily nibbles his way through acres of them.
The bushes move every day, like Dr. Who Weeping Angels. They make bamboo look sluggish. My advice is privet braided into cool-looking fences, like the British used to do, when they were a real country. It's actually pretty easy and self- maintaining. The internet has lots of advice and pictures.
I mean this war with Iran has been going on since the Carter administration and we're currently very heavily committed to forcing it to end decisively.
This statement is a lie. Why do you find it necessary to lie?
I just paid an incredible amount of money to fill my Gas tank. I'm not letting those Moolahs in Eye-ran get away with whatever they're getting away with. Take that A-rabs.
An attempt to get the bourgeois riled up.
Anything fruit-bearing needs netting if you want any of it. A few years ago, one of those bastard hummingbirds cracked a window because I didn't fill their damn sugar-water feeder fast enough. They're just big mosquitoes. Have you ever seen a Praying Mantis attack a cat? They do.
Life is short. Tennyson was right about the natural world.
Between September 1941 and January 1944, the Siege of Leningrad claimed the lives of 800,000 of the city’s inhabitants, mainly through cold and hunger, as the population of the city was subjected to enemy fire and to ruthless regimentation by the Soviet authorities. At the NYT, the price of raspberries just increased.
How do you know you are in a society in decline and likely to go the way of past similar societies? When it’s become so wealthy and privileged, it thinks it’s entitled to cheap fresh raspberries in the dead of winter. I’m still in awe of that fact that I can even get them here in NE WI the week after a blizzard.
Towards the bottom of the Times article:
"Raspberries have other complications to contend with. The U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a market alert this month signaling that the demand for the fruit had greatly outstripped supply. Intense heat and heavy rain have been factors, and there are supply gaps as the season in Mexico is beginning to wind down and the Southern California season is ramping up."
From the USDA:
"Several factors are contributing to the tight [raspberry] market, including Central Mexico reaching its lowest production levels as volumes decline from peak levels and fields are pruned in preparation for the next crop cycle. Additionally, ongoing reports of political unrest, violence, blockades, and operational disruptions continue to affect key growing regions, although these issues are receiving less national attention than in previous weeks. Central Mexico volumes are expected to remain low for the next 3 to 5 weeks, with meaningful recovery
not anticipated until late April or early May."
In summary, prices are up due to supply issues. The article is complete nonsense.
No raspberries for oil. Or something.
"I mean this war with Iran has been going on since the Carter administration and we're currently very heavily committed to forcing it to end decisively."
Truth.
Truth bravely written, I should add.
I am sorry. This is a Babylon Bee article, not something that a once-serious paper would put out. I refuse to believe it is real, and I think you are all in on a big practical joke trying to get me to believe an actual adult who claims to work for a real newspaper came within throwing distance of this . . . work.
Nice try, but I am onto you.
Truth bravely written, I should add.
Bullshit incorrectly written. "War" has a specific meaning in both international and U.S. constitutional law. Neither describes the state of relations with Iran.
I know you don't give a shit, but Althouse is supposedly a constitutional scholar and a scold about the proper use of language (when it suits her), and should know better.

When it’s become so wealthy and privileged...that it starts to fight expensive elective wars.

An explanation too good to be a porky pie.
Geez, Wisconsinites, go plant your own raspberry rickets. Our lane is lined with wild raspberry bushes. Walking the dogs is a berry-lover's delight for several months every year.
On behalf of criminal foreigners illegally in our country, libtards are willing to give up everything to go out into the streets harassing and attacking immigration enforcement officers.
On behalf of our nation's war effort to rid the world of an evil regime, they won't even give up eating raspberries.
It's because libtard Party members consider America the evil regime.
In the 70s, PBS's answer to inflation was "The Victory Garden" (originally "Crockett's Victor Garden" hosted by Pearl Harbor veteran Jim Crockett). The generation that went through the Depression and WWII could cope better with hard times than we can.
I must've missed all those hand-wringing articles about the cost of berries when Biden's inflation was approaching double-digits.
Trump should have done the funflation that Biden did. Good times.

Nobody cares about your bullshit definition. They and their proxies have been killing us and our allies.

No. Iran declared war on the United States,(The Great Satan), in 1979. It has fought us through proxies since then.
