"Iran’s democratic opposition groups — monarchists and republicans, secular and religious minorities, leftists, liberals, and every ethnicity — are united..."

"... on four foundational principles: Iran’s territorial integrity; individual liberties and equality of all citizens; separation of religion and state; and the Iranian people’s right to decide a democratic form of government. Many Iranians, often despite facing bullets, have called on me to lead this transition. I am in awe of their courage, and I have answered their call. Our path forward will be transparent: a new constitution drafted and ratified by referendum, followed by free elections under international oversight. When Iranians vote, the transitional government dissolves.... A free Iran would extend [the Abraham Accords] by immediately recognizing Israel and pursuing a broader regional peace framework linking Iran, Israel and our Arab neighbors in cooperation rather than conflict. I suggest calling the agreement the Cyrus Accords, for Cyrus the Great, the benevolent ancient Persian ruler whom Thomas Jefferson cited as an inspiration...."

One thing that was interesting is the paper Colin Powell and Brent Scowcroft wrote about why they didn't overthrow Saddam Hussein in Iraq I. They predicted all the bad things that would happen so perfectly you can't shake the feeling that they wrote it *after* Iraq II. (They didn't, they wrote it ten years before.)

Really opened my eyes about foreign policy. Yes, predictions are hard, especially about the future, but there are people who are smart enough and diligent enough to get a decent idea of what might happen if you do a certain thing.

It's interesting to me that for many people, the take away of Iraq II was "don't listen to the experts." For me, the lesson was, find the people who know what they are talking about and listen to them.

I also feel pretty good about: Don't base foreign policy on lies.

This was a massive blunder, and the killing of the schoolgirls has unified the Iranians, so good luck getting your overthrow, especially given that Russia can deliver all the food Iran needs by the Caspian Sea, to the Iranian government to hand out, underpinning their legitimacy, and of course China is fucked if the Iranians lose, so they will do all they can, short of getting into a hot war with the US.

“On narrow, time-bound military predictions (especially Ukraine), he’s been wrong far more often than right—likely 0–2 clear “wins” out of dozens of specific calls over the decade, with accuracy near 0% on those.” (Grok)
Perplexity is a bit more merciful:
“he has made several documented, substantive wrong predictions (especially about a quick Russian victory and Ukrainian collapse), but there is no authoritative figure for how many times he has been wrong in total over the last 10 years.”
As a retired Colonel in the US Army, he should keep his mouth shut at least in the first month of battle. Talk about giving comfort to our enemies.

Just a reminder of some of what they have done: U.S. Marine Corps Colonel William R. Higgins was kidnapped in February 1988 while serving with a U.N. observer mission. He was tortured for months and ultimately dumped near a mosque. An autopsy found that he had been starved and castrated, and that the skin on his face had been partially removed along with his tongue.

Financial Times is reporting that the CIA had a human asset within Khamenei's inner circle.
Also reported is that Israel hacked all the traffic lights in Tehran to track his movements.
All sounds hard to believe, but amazing if true.

There's Greg, settling scores from 1979 and calling people names. OK boomer."

LOL. Whenever a person in their'50s or 60's and even some 40s disparages boomers, you can be sure they have mommy and daddy issues with their boomer parents.
maybe had to finish dinner or no desert, or, make their own bed, or take a bath. Or, brothers and sisters got more attention
Most accepted the rules, and most that didn't realized the value as they matured.
A small percentage, unfortunately, apply the hatred of their well meaning parents to the entire "boomer" generation.
Be sympathetic to these people, not angry, for they know not what they do.

People seem to forget to add to that- with the full support of President Jimmy Carter.

"We have no interest in Iran, which poses no threat to us."

What you fail to understand is that the people who have been in control of Iran are true believers. True believers on the level of early medieval Catholics. This is a foreign concept to many modernists.

They do what they do because they believe in their hearts that it is God's will, as told them through his divine prophet, Mohammad.

A familiarity with the mission he gave them should convince you than they must not be allowed to build nuclear weapons.

But the founders never intended that the 2nd Amendment would allow just anyone to go into their local convenience store and walk out with a 10-pack of TNDs.

Dear Kaks and Jaqa and RCOceans, et al:

How do you manage to get through your ravings without once mentioning, or even vaguely hinting in the general direction of, Sharia Supremacism?

Jaq: With all that knowledge about Tehran, we hit an elementary school for girls in the first minutes of the surprise attack, killing 100+ little girls, and it was a US made missile.

Bullshit.

I bet you bought that Israel bombed the hospital in Gaza story hook, line, and sinker, too.
